Suppose we have enough?

65 pounds of grilled pork loin, sliced and heated with sauce, 110 pounds of turkeys, roasted, deboned and heated in home made gravy, And buns to put it all on. 50 pounds of potatoes mixed with 10 dozen eggs, onions, relish salad dressing and seasonings, 6 big heads of cabbage shredded and mixed with onion, sugar salt, vinegar and seasonings, beans doctored with bacon, onion brown sugar and mustard. Gallons and gallons of ice cream made from eggs, cream whole milk, sugar and variously cocoa, strawberries, pineapple and lots and lots of vanilla....donated home baked pies and cakes, coffee, ice tea and lemonade.

We usually feed between 350 and 400 people....and earn a bit more than $3,000. Hope it goes as well this year.

I plan to collapse in a corner tomorrow!!

Do you work on a huge project to feed people to earn money for a charity? what is it?

I continually do Volunteer work, of some sort.

Firehouse, VA Hospital, Odds and ends in the Association,
bring cooked food for someone who has lost a loved one.
Etc, Etc, Etc.

In fact, being in the building trade, I have helped people all my life and
have taught guys who have worked for me; enough, that they could go out on their own.

Guess that is why I am not rich, money wise but I have many good friends.

Gandle, I don't really know it was a "because we had to". I know running was some sort of empowerment and what better way than with our friend that never told on us or gossiped, or was mean to us, just always understanding and being there always for us - our dog or in my case granpa's or uncle Eben's dogs in the country. Running barefooted down the sandy country roads in the sand hills, long hair blowing in the wind, laughter of what pleasure it brought to me. Stopping to watch that ol' rabbit or birds pouncing on the grasshoppers or just lay on the grass and pick out the clouds that had taken special form. On grandpa's farm, had to wear shoes as there were sandburs. There too I could run with the dogs, pick wild flowers and go on our hunts to find those unknown "things" of the wild. Sadly though, the time came and those people and dogs were gone and no more running free as I had. You brought back some special memories and I thank you for that. Josh - let me see if I can answer some of your corn questions. I live at the edge of about 1 million acres of the stuff! I don't know where you live but it would be a great road trip to travel through the midwest during the summer. You could see for yourself the incredible vastness of the cornfields. What Gandle is talking about is field corn, better known as dent corn. It is not sweet corn for consumption on the dinner table. Dent corn is used in animal fodder, the food industry (corn syrup) and industry (biodiesel, cosmetics, etc). 79,000 square feet of corn sounds like alot, but consider this, the U.S. grew 42% of the world's corn in 2006. That's an incredible number. It's 283.3 MILLION metric tons, 11.1 BILLION bushels. Someone could probably do the math to calculate what that pile would look like. Out of the number, 54% went to feed, 19% was exported and 27% to food, seed, and industrial purposes. The corn is processed in the field. The combine "combines" the processes of harvesting, treshing and cleaning the grain. The grain is then transferred directly from the combine into 18-wheel grain trucks that deliver it to the storage facilities. You can travel out to the Mississippi river and watch the grain travel downstream in large grain barges. As far as the fields go, here in Illinois there's a joke - There are two fields between Chicago and St. Louis....one is corn and the other is soybeans. I can tell you that farmers will plant every available square inch of land, sometimes negotiating around telephone poles, trees, whatever obstacle might present itself. There are pockets of land 2 acres or less that are planted each year. One of the most amazing sights I've ever seen was when a farmer was disking under the soil in November. Don't know about the Indian, but you can get Thai Hots at tomatogrowers.com. They'll germinate in about 7-8 days at 85 degrees F. They like pots too, 'cause they have a compact growth habit, mostly up, with loads of vertical fruit. They dry well too...

The food was for the public to raise money to send a bunch of teens and adults to West Virginia to do some repair on a school and playground. Every year we have a group going somewhere to help people who need help, New Orleans one year, Southern Illinois to help flood victims, to the Redbud reservation to do some painting and repair....etc.
I believe we raised enough to pay for the gas to get them there.
Yesterday was my collapse day!! LOL!

Geeeezzzz....we do a lot of food fundraisers, but nothing close to several hundred. Maybe 80-100...spaghetti/chili/soup & bread feeds mostly. We do an annual wine tasting and auction every year for the library, but I once suggested they not do the same old appetizers year after year and now they won't let me in the kitchen.

One of the best spaghetti sauces I've ever had was at a spaghetti feed fundraiser for a friend who had breast cancer. People were asked to bring two quarts of sauce and they dumped them all together.

I made the gravy for the hot turkey sandwiches. We roasted the turkeys and cut the meat from the bones, saved the "juice" in the roasting pan, then I put the bones and the skin and onion, celery, carrots etc etc in a pot and simmered it for about 4 hours.
I had easily 4 to 5 gallons of broth....from the turkeys I cooked for this and saved from turkeys cooked for salad and chickens from other events. But what amazed mew as it took 3 1/2 POUNDS of flour to thicken the broth for gravy! Sounds impossible....but that's what I put in! LOL!
We came out pretty close to the line for the pork, beans and slaw....had a couple of gallons of potato salad left and a couple of gallons of turkey....ran out of pie (let them eat cake!) and about 6 gallons of ice cream...but that will be sold in a moment...if it isn't already!

No, I don't think that was enough food for the people mentioned. Shame on you for starving those poor folks. Shame, shame shame!!!! :-)

110 pounds of turkey???? you kiddin' me??? should have been at least 111 pounds! Jeesh...Linda...you are really lacking lately!
