This is a request for two things that I have not been able to find in any of my cookbooks (the way I like them). First, I want a recipe for kidney bean salad. The one I am looking for had a vinegar-based dressing. It did not have mayo but it was a type of vinegar thickened with, I think it looked like cornstarch, with pickle relish, chopped celery and a little big of onion.

The other recipe I want is that simple old freezer slaw, very finely cut, with chopped celery, carrots, green pepper in it. Can anybody accomodate me? I thought surely that the Amish cookbook would have them, but not the ones that I have. Appreciaate any help.- Barb

I always mess up when I am in a hurry. It is, of course, a little "bit" of onion. Sorry - Barb

Here's the Freezer Cole Slaw:

1 medium head cabbage, shredded
1 carrot, grated
1 bell pepper, chopped fine

Add 1 t. salt to vegetables and let stand one hour. While vegetables are standing, make a syrup of:

1 cup vinegar
1/4 cup water
1 t. celery seed
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 t. whole mustard seed

Mix dressing ingredients together and boil 1 minute. Let syrup stand until lukewarm and pour over cabbage. Put into containers the correct size to use at one meal. Freeze.

Note: this slaw may be kept in the refrigerator unfrozen up to one week.

Like others, my masdies struggle this time of year. My grow room can hit upper 80's to low 90's if it is really hot outside and I keep all of the lights cranking all day. We're currently hitting our first really hot spells of this summer and I have started turning off some of the hotter lights at noon on brutally hot days (+85F), I figure they'd do better with a little less light than the 90+ temps. FWIW: I grow all of my masdies in fine bark in clay pots, which are then put inside of larger clay pots. I then stuff spagh in between the 2 pots and soak the spagh 2x a week and mist the outer pots and root zones once a day, this really seems to help keep the roots much cooler in my environment. Brooke, I have a Angle Tang that is 6-7 years old that has at least 100 leaves and has had as many as 15-20 blooming spikes at a time. It is the ugliest plant; black tipped leaves, half dead leaves, etc... but it really puts on a nice flower show throughout the year, I'd be ashamed to take a picture ;-) My 4-5 others masies aren't quite as bad and my tovernasis (sp?) doesn't show much sign of the fert burn that the others exhibit. I'd reckon' it probably depends on the particular variety as far as how well/much they can take fert??? Bob

When it's raining, check where the water is going. Often downspouts clog and water leaks from the joints, down the wall and finally into the basement. Also, check that the grading is moving the water away from the foundation. If the sump pump is working, be sure the water is moving away from the property--whether it's to daylight further out or to a sewer/storm drain. The occasional water you get in the basement is likely a result of poor external drainage on the foundation wall--no plastic membrane or similar stout barrier against the wall combined with slow draining soils. As a rule, tract builders simply backfill with whatever they've excavated. Instead of caulking around the water supply, a more permanent remedy would be a hydraulic cement based material. Frankly, the bit of water is nowhere as disturbing as that horrendous diaper insulation that is guaranteed to lead to problems.

they make stain especially for concrete. It will also help seal and protect your statue from further deterioration. Make sure it is good and clean first, dish detergent and a scrub brush, followed by just a good rinse and allow to dry thoroughly for several days before attempting the stain. Make sure you stain and seal the bottom of the base too. one of the best things you can do for it is to keep it from contact with soil. rest its base on another piece of concrete or on gravel. constant contact with the soil will introduce extra moisture into the cement and expansion and contraction of the cement will be increased during heat and cold periods by the moisture retained in the concrete. best wishes

barb, I found freezer slaw in 5 different Southern Living Annual Recipe books. They all say shredded, not chopped veggies , none have onion. Some have celery seed, some celery salt but none have celery. Of course all have water, vinegar, sugar and salt and some have dry mustard and some have mustard seeds. This may be of little or no help to you.

I have a gazillion cookbooks, community, church, school etc. and I looked through a zillion of them to no avail.. I think my MIL used to make a refrigerated slaw that was chopped but it wasn't frozen and I don't have her recipe.

This is the one I use, but I sometimes use sliced celery in place of the celery seed, sometimes I don't have celery and so I use the recipe as written.

KIDNEY BEAN SALAD

1 lg. can kidney beans
1 purple onion, sliced thin
1/4 c. vinegar
1/4 c. salad oil
1/2 c. Italian dressing
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. celery seed

Add all ingredients together, let sit 24 hours or more. Drain to serve.
