need advice on sink cabinet size ASAP please!

My KD has specified a 39" base cabinet for our 30" shaw's original farm sink. Does that seem excessively large to you? I thought the cabinet would be about 35 or 36" w. I would like to go with a smaller cabinet if I can, thus pick up a few extra inches to put toward my built in paper towel cubby. Could you let me know what is standard? Thanks so much!

According to the manufacturer:
There is no recommended method of fitting a Shaws Original Sink.

Because of the plus or minus 2% dimension possibility of a hand made product, it is recommended that the cabinet maker wait until your sink is delivered to make the cabinet or counter top. There is no standard fitting framework or support brackets. The cabinet should be reinforced to hold a 135 lb. to 175 lb. sink, plus the weight of water. Typically, this involves a timber supporting frame with 3/4" plywood deck, or even brick plinth; suitably sized to satisfy the specific requirements. The apron is usually extended 1" to 2" from the front of the cabinet. We see the sink under mounted under the counter top material most of the time, but it can be flush mounted or even raised above the counter top. Historically, the fitting of fireclay sinks was dictated by the site and usage requirements, with the plumber/installer making the necessary provisions to support the sink.

From this, it sounds like your sink could be anywhere from 29" to 31" wide. I don't have a farm sink, so I don't know how much room you need on either side for mounting, but, it seems to me 39" is excessive and that 36" would be sufficient--maybe even 33" or 34" (if custom). Perhaps others will chime in with more information.

When I was going to do a farm sink, I asked this same question and looked carefully in the FKB for examples. They were installed in cabinets anywhere from 30"-39". The wider bases had decorative details on the side. I would say that most of the 30" sinks looked like they were in a 34"-35" base.

I had to go look at my door hinge because mine folds back nearly flat and I knew that I had never seen the hinge between the doors before. It's not a piano hinge, just two small regular hinges. It's really the other hinge--the one that connects the door to the cabinet that seems to dictate how flat the door can fold back. Mine wasn't as flat as I thought, but it has never gotten in my way in the slightest. I'm assuming yours will open in the direction of the sink, not the stove. Correct? I would not want the hinge to be visible when the door is shut. We also have natural cherry cabinets, and those small hinges are brass, which makes them even more invisible. It seems like chrome would really catch the eye, and not in a good way.

I think you have to go with what feels right - you're standing in the room, we're not. The problem (IMHO) is the math is off for the entire room. Lord, that's sounds awful doesn't it? lol! But it's really not that tragic. :) It just makes it harder to balance and distribute contrasts, texture, color, etc. Math is a wonderous thing and is key in any kind of design whether 2 dimensional in a graphic or artistic sense or 3 dimensional in an architectural sense. Get the math right for stuff like crown widths, door height, mantle height, where light switches are placed, or whatever and it's a lot easier to decorate -- things just seem to *fall into place* with little effort or stress. Thing is your room is (I'm guessing) just like the majority of rooms out there. The math is off. Happens for various reasons. Original drawings are altered to fit the lot, carpenters do one part while masons do another, and on and on. Often there isn't one person involved who knows about golden ratios passing calculators out to everyone and double checking this to that. The trick to use wall space with varying widths of trim is a good trick to make moldings look more expensive and substantial but probably not necessary in a room with 9ft ceilings. Because the math doesn't work out right. That's why I suggested just taking the small bead of trim off. But ya can't. So absolutely try it the way you think will fudge everything into feeling right. It can come out just fine and no one will be the wiser about the stuff that might not add up perfectly by the numbers.

Thanks so much for sharing about your floors Debbi. "I feel like it's almost bullet proof" - I'm hoping the white oak will be just as durable. My current red oak cabinets have been very tough and have stood up to lots of abuse and neglect which is what made me choose oak again for my new cabinets and floors. :) When I first started the search for HW flooring, I thought all I'd consider was solid. Then I saw some high quality engineered floors and was sold. I think the extra stability from the engineered core of the will make the floors more durable. The floor I'm likely getting also has a 4.5 mm wear layer. It's like a thick slice of wood. It can take up to 3 sandings (or so I'm told) so I hope they'll stand the test of time and last for decades. "Everything is expensive, but when we are buying, we're hoping to only have to do it once." That is how I'm justifying spending the gobs of money going into this reno...! I've been selecting higher quality materials that are (I hope) quite timeless so that this kitchen will only have to be done this one time.

This is just my 2 cents, I'm certainly not a contractor. I would get rid of the shower and shift the vanity over to the right so it's in the middle of the wall. You should be able to do so without having to move the plumbing. I would also make it a good enough size so it can hold your linens as well. But not so huge that it looks ridiculous. I think building a closet in that corner won't look quite as clean. You can save that money and put it towards the vanity and working on the rest of the bathroom. I also think you can totally get rid of the bathtub and put a big shower there instead. Would be pretty great to have a spacious shower. You can do the combo tub/shower thing but it won't look as good obviously. Hard to make style suggestions without knowing what the rest of the house is like. For some reason though, I do picture darker wood flooring and white walls. Not so sure how wood flooring holds up in a bathroom though.
