My grandmother used to make one that probably looked similar to your mom's but it was made with a dough that started with a cooked potato blended with powdered sugar, butter and vanilla added to it. The peanut butter spreading and rolling part was the same.

A friend of mine made that many years ago...spread it on waxed paper and rolled paper and all into a log.... called me and asked how in the h*ll she was supposed to get the paper out of it. She passed away 20 years ago but I think fondly of her whenever someone mentions that candy.

Mom called her version "potato candy."

I've heard of it, was always called potato candy. Always reminded me of those caramels you can buy that are caramel with a cream filling rolled like that.

I love that potato dough. And yes, Cynic that's what I always liked about those caramel pinwheels, the 'cream' tasted like the potato dough. We didn't make the peanut butter pinwheels but we did make the potato dough into potatoes. I think they were rolled in a mix of powdered sugar and cinnamon and they really looked like potatoes. You could buy them around St. Patricks Day I think. The commercial ones were all perfect looking oval potatoes but our homemade ones we tried to make them look like real potatoes. A fun project to do with kids. I found a picture of the potatoes. The woman made them practically healthy by adding cream cheese and such. I've seen that potato dough made into discs and covered with dark chocolate too, and have seen it used to make chocolate covered Easter eggs.

I have a Recipe for Peanut butter balls, simiar to your ingredients but covered with Chocolate.

The Cashier at our market gave me some and the recipe.

They tasted great but I would like to try the recipe, to test it , before I post.

She used a small jar of Peanut butter ( 18 oz. )

One quarter lb. of butter ( softened )
Milk , Powdered Sugar and three teaspoons of Vanilla.

Mixed all this with her hands ( sounds a little messy )
I will try something else.

Roll into balls, ( Quarter size ) dusted with Sugar and dip in melted Chocolate. Use half toothpicks.
Cool on parchment in the frig.

She said it made about 100 pieces.
I am going to try a Quarter of a batch.

Now that's extremely funny to me, too, being from Ohio. If there is such a designation as "official homemade candy" of a state, buckeyes are Ohio's without a doubt. I've made and eaten thousands of these over the past 40+ years.

They are called buckeyes because they look like buckeye nuts, which grow like crazy in OH, and are part of the logos (and origin of the name) for Ohio State Buckeyes sports teams.

The candies should look like this. This site brings up a good point, also. The original old-school recipe did call for paraffin in the chocolate but although this makes it possible to hold these in your fingers a few seconds longer before you get messy, there is no other reason to put it in and they taste much better without it.

The step about rolling in sugar before coating with chocolate is something I've not heard of before, and seems completely unnecessary. All of the ingredients are already very sweet, especially if you use one of the sugar-added peanut butters.

The milk is also not an ingredient I've used for this before, either. I would recommend against it because it is just going to make things sticky while working with the mix, and as it dries out, the balls will become crumbly. Lately, I've made mine with peanut butter of 100% peanuts (usually has a layer of peanut oil on top) and powdered sugar, with no added butter. I think of it more as a process than a recipe. The premise is that you need to make the peanut butter able to be rolled into a ball and hold its' shape. So the butter is just unnecessary empty calories since all that is needed is to add sugar until the peanut butter is the proper consistency to hold together.

If you do decide to do the recipe with butter, use real butter and not margarine. Margarine makes terrible buckeyes because of the high moisture content. Once it dries, the balls crumble when you take a bite.

As far as the observation that the taste of buckeyes is similar to the "peanut butter candy" from the original discussion - that's spot-on. There's a significant textural difference, though. And, of course, the chocolate.

Wow, the candy really does look like the buckeye nut! I knew the recipe was named for the "buckeyes" of Ohio, but I didn't know the candy was a dead ringer for the nut.

Purple:
I made the Buckeyes !!!

Cut the stick of butter (one quater pound ) in half, softened it in the MV.
Added 2 tablespoons of milk,
2 teaspoons of vanilla,
to a half jar of peanut butter ( 9 ozs.)

Mixed this with a tablespoon and added enough Powdered Sugar ( about 7 tablespoons ),
to make a soft dough ball.

On worktop dusted with Powdered Sugar, I formed measured amounts into balls

Then I put them in the frige till cool.

Took them out and dipped them in melted Chocolate.

Did not know, why they were called Buckeyes , so the whole thing was covered with Chocolate.

Sorry about that !!!

I did not have any problem with the butter or mixing.

They are really good.

Hey that's cool to hear! Everyone should try buckeyes, no matter what they look like. And hey, I'm with ya - the more chocolate the better! Leaving an uncovered spot is just a novelty. My Mom dips hers with toothpicks while I prefer to drop the balls in and scoop them out with a spoon so they have a huge puddle of chocolate attached. And LOL butter is definitely not a problem. It's extremely delicious. I just don't like the added calories for this treat. Using dark chocolate can help in that area, too. Whatever way suits you, go for it!
