GH eileen fisher seaonless silk comforter

i am in love with this comforter, but it's very spendy for me and also not durable enough (dryclean only, protect from small children)so i was wondering if anyone knew how to construct the little bubbles/knots that give the sort of ruched-up effect? i have played with it a little but can't quite get it to look planned and graceful instead of like i stopped half-way thru trying to make a japanese shibori project. what fabrics might work well besides silk? any thoughts would be appreciated!
