Lovely space. Here are some ideas to consider. Put the sofa where the 2 red chairs are to create a more distinct area between LR and DR. Put the 2 red chairs opposite. See if this helps to balance out the space. I don't like the tone of the red chairs with the fireplace, and think that neutral leather would look nice. They are nice chairs and you might consider them in a bedroom or other room in the house. I also don't think the wood tone of the mantle shelf goes with the fireplace brick. It could be my monitor, but the brick has some pink undertones, the mantle is too orange. I would like to see the mantle stained darker like the curio cabinet. I think an area rug would look nice in the LR. I think adding window treatments would be one of the first things to do, as it would warm up the space, and help bring the 2 windows by the fireplace into proportion in the room. There are also a lot of vertical things going on, and not enough horizontal surfaces to "ground" the space. With the curio, china hutch, and secretary all being the same proportions, I would like to see some console tables or end tables that are more grounding at that midlevel in the space. I think the lighting is fine if you like it. But adding some lamps on consoles or sofa tables would bring some light lower to read in the space. Overall, a nice space.

Beekeeperswife, I've seen that "match the wall" look. Hmmm. I'll think about that. See if I can get some tan swatches. jeannine, There is no brown. The chairs are dark red and dark green, and the sofa is green/red/navy. The carpet is gold with red flowers. The photo IS dark. There are windows on 3 sides though, 6 of them, so it's light all day. Checked out gold drapes originally, but the swatches that came were all so shiny. Too Dorothy Lamour! nettie, the colored valance is certainly a look that appeals to me, are they still popular? I know....the room's full of Victorian antiques....but it's not as though one gets rid of them after 30 years. Back in one of my previous homes I would have done the Morris wallpaper and burgandy velvet drapes. That's too much for this house. :) Is the link below what you mean? With maybe tan silk panels? Move the sectional away from the wall a bit, add artwork above the couch, side tables with lamps or floor lamp. You could also place a table behind the couch with reading lamp. I am a curtain person so i would add fabric to the windows. You do need a complementary color for some contrast. When you do a few additional things, please post pics so we can see where you are going with your room. Good

I have two very good products you can try, Oakley. First, my go to cleaner is a Woolite oxyclean hybrid that works on almost anything. It’s called Woolote instant spot remover with Oxyclean. Spray unril the spot is really wet, wait a few min, rub in and then put a folded towel or microfiber cloth over the spot and put a really heavy book on it (or several books) weighing at least 15 or 20 lbs. Then stand on the book for a minute and leave the whole thing there for a couple of days. Then remove the book(s) and cloth and vacuum because the nap will need that after being smushed so. Honestly that works almost always. The other product I have is an aerosol spray cream called Spot Shot. Try it out on an inconspicuous area. It works a different way. I like the first method best for cleaning /removing stains. But if you have an old stain you’ve already tried to clean the Spot Shot is the one to try. My experience has been that two highly patterned or colored rugs in the same room haven’t worked for me. More pleasing is a combination of one very “loud” rug and one that is quieter, both in pattern and color. Regardless of how big a room is, two very distinctive rugs will suck all the oxygen out of the room—- unless by chance you find two that work so well they transcend that “rule.” I never did! Good luck, rugs are tough. i’ve always used them as the starting point of a design because I either already owned them or was struck by lightning and found one out of the blue without really looking. 😎 ETA both cleaning products available on Amazon.
