That is beautiful fly. I crocheted a quilt for my sister for her Christmas present and also a small version for our daughter when she was born. No pictures of either right now, but it was a log cabin style. I have no idea of the value, but with the time it took my guess is it would be into the hundreds if one were to sell it.

I found the pattern I used by Red Heart Yarn online. It's an amazing pattern with popcorn stitches in the center square and in the third sections out from the center too. It weighed a lot too. Lots of yarn.

That is *gorgeous*, justgotabeme! WOW. So is it pieced together? I can't read those directions. This one is made of hundreds (?) of little triangles, stitched together with thread (I tried to capture that in the photos). Or did you crochet it in one piece, alternating colors as you went?

And I can't tell -- is mine crocheted or knitted? It looks like rib knit to me, but maybe there are crochet stitches that look like that too? It's very dense. Heavy like yours was.

I just looked at the detail photo in your album, and your quilt/afghan is definitely crocheted. This is a very nice piece, BTW.

justgotabme, thanks for the link to the Log Cabin pattern. I have been wanting to make one, and all the patterns I've found so far have been lame. This one looks really good! Now I have to go play at the yarn store and get lots of coordinating colors. Whee.

Fly, just so you knows:) that is an afghan with a patchwork pattern, similar to those used in quilts.
Technically a quilt has 3 layers, top,batting, and bottom stitched together in some fashion, tied, hand quilted or machine quilted.
It is awesome and a great find by the way. I found 4 afghans at GW that I bought for my DS and DD- I could tell they had been made and put away and not used. I think someomes gramma is happy that they are loved now! They are typical patterns tho.

Ah, thanks, cooperbailey and hartwood! A crocheted afghan with a patchwork pattern. Makes sense. I just keep looking at all the tiny stitching holding the pieces together and thinking how could someone just throw this to Goodwill? It's such an amazing thing. And the colors...is the pattern a common one with a name like Log Cabin? It keeps seeming to switch back and forth to me like Op art, kind of 3 dimensional.

hartwood, if you make that log cabin piece, I'd *love* to see a pic of it...

Both of those afghans are beautiful! It kills me to look at these because know I want to do them and I have some many projects already started! I already knit and quilt (still learning), but crocheting and tatting are on my to-learn-list.

I'm sorry I won't be much help on the value. Something like that is so hard to price, especially if it is sentimental in any way.

Fly, yes it is pieced together. Just the larger squares though, not each change of color. If you scroll down on the page I linked you'll see where they show a visual of how to place each square to make the larger diamond on the whole. Your afghan was done in a similar fashion.....
I looked at the enlarged picture of the close up of yours and it's done in single crochet worked in the back loop only which gives it the "ribbed" appearance.
I can't believe you found such a beautiful specimen at Goodwill! May I ask how much you paid for it?
Connie, you are very welcome for the link to the pattern. I'm thrilled I found it too since I'm not sure I know where my original pattern is anymore. I too have way too many projects to start one up now, but hopefully by next winter I'll have some free time.

lafonda, I can knit until I drop a stitch. Then I'm toast! I'm sure crocheting would come very easy to you. Grab a learn how book at the library or a small inexpensive one where you buy your yarn and teach yourself. That's how I learned.

Ah...you know, when I see knitting instructions (or crochet, or lace) my eyes glaze over and I hear "HELPPPPP" in my head :) Like the phrase "single crochet worked in the back loop only" might as well be Mandarin. I appreciate the explanation, though :)

And can you believe, this beautiful all wool thing--I bought it for $8.99 - 5%. Someone's grandmother is crying...but on the other hand, I'm an appreciative home for it(I may just hang it on the wall somewhere, you know, in all the open wallspace LOL) so at least Grandmother can know that someone's granddaughter appreciates it. That Grandmother was also a way cool person to have chosen that pattern, I think.

My mom, who is a grandmother, has been sewing up all her fabric remnants and bits and just giving the clothes new to the thrift store... she needs something to do, and I suspect the same is true of many crocheting grandmothers. My mother-in-law also takes up projects, it's been scarves in the past and is dishcloths now, and just builds up a huge inventory.

So I'd bet the grandmother is not crying; let's hope, in fact, that she's working on another afghan!

Is it wool or acrylic? I always think it's a shame if someone puts all this time and expertise into knitting with acrylic. That kind of skill deserves good material.

karin, you have a cool mom :) I love what she's doing. Reminds me of a woman I read about here in oregon who amassed a huge, significant agate collection from beachcombing over the last 50 years...and she's gradually been putting some of the best pieces of it back so new people could find them. How much do you love someone who would do that?! (Kind of like the Steven Wright quote on the Antiques/Collectibles board, but for real!)

I'm pretty sure it's wool (the match test--it crumbled into ash rather than melted). I agree, why put all that effort into a less than worthy material?

Gosh, $8.99-5%? You couldn't even get the yarn for that anymore. Not even in acrylic! LOL
