It seems like this is going to be the way of the future--it's far cheaper to sell online than in a brick and mortar. So sad. Well, I guess we can pretend we're living in an era where you had to order many things from the Sears, Wards or JC Penny catalogs. It's a boon for the delivery companies, for sure.

Imagine what will "down towns" look like? What will stay? It is amazing how fast the world is changing.

Ours is not closing...probably because it's in the largest mall in the US, and I bet that they will leave when there lease is up - t's usually pretty empty.

Ours has been gone for years too. I hated it when it left. My nearest Penney's is 80 miles away now. I don't buy much from them anymore. If I have to order online, there are too many other choices.

Monica, I live in NE Pa and was surprised to find out that the King of Prussia Mall was the largest mall in the US, in area. I think that The Mall of America has more stores, tho. I didn't think that King Of Prussia was even in the running. I'm not a shopper, so I've never been there. I've passed it tho.

KOP Mall in PA has, at last count, over 400 retail stores( including 7 major department stores) and over 40 restaurants.
And still growing.

I went to Mall of America once just to see what it is like. I can't imagine going there if I was just planning to go to one store for something. I prefer the smaller malls.I had been a loyal JCPenney shopper for many years but when we got a Kohls here last year I switched. JCPenney made a big mistake a few years ago when they stopped having sales and tried that new pricing.

Our Penney's closed last July, but they hadn't had much inventory for a few months before that. Without many choices of shopping places in this smaller community to begin with, we're really short now. They did carry quality and cute baby and young childrens clothes, so I could go there for gifts. Decent bath towels. And DH has worn their mens underwear and tees all his life - now our closest Penney's is 55 miles away.

Makes supporting your local economy difficult.

I'm surprised the whole chain didn't go under. The quality and selection went down hill about 15 years ago. Then they quit catering to the traditional people who actually shop there and went out on a crusade that ws against their branding. We're keeping our JCPenney, but I haven't shopped there is almost a year. It's out of my way to go there. I now prefer other stores.

Penney's are still in the malls..just no longer free standing stores around here...closest one is 30 miles away.

It was on the business page of our local newspaper. Five of the Penny's stores to be closed are in Wisconsin. Our local store (near Milwaukee) will remain.

It will not affect us one way or the other. We have not shopped at Penny's for the past several years. We are getting up in years and my wife finds that the store managers do not stock clothing for the older folks. She also gripped about the physical arrangement of the store. Instead of nice straight neat isles, it was a torturous maze to make your way across the merchandice floor. Also, the quality and clothing sizes had declined. She went elsewhere. Some corrections were made in 2013, but the damage had already been done and the older generation was going to other places.

Their Michael Graves and Conran items in the home furnishing departments are the best!

They lost me as a customer for two reasons. Ear piercing rock music from their speaker system and being followed around by store detectives.

Mall of America is the largest...I just checked it. I live 20 mins. from KofP mall and while it's big, I couldn't imagine it being larger than MofA. It appears, from the linked list, MofA is almost 1 million SF larger.

One of the Penney's near me is closing and the other one will remain open, and that doesn't include KofP.

I think we need to have a get-together at the King of Prussia Mall. I live about 20 minutes away and consider it "my mall". If JC Penney closed I wouldn't even notice. I never shop in there. If it was the only store in town, I would certainly be sorry to see it go,although I still wouldn't buy their clothes.

Now if Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdales, or Nordstrom closed, I would be sad.

Shopping at KoP is like a shopping marathon. I am exhausted by the time I make my way around. I also notice that the shoppers are getting younger all the time. Oh wait, maybe I am getting older. Uh oh.

I'm also 20 min from KOP - a get together would be fun.

I've never liked Penney's... And I have no idea why they're still in business. Their stores smell funny (like KMart smells funny).

I haven't bought anything there in decades.

I have never ever, to the best of my recollection, bought anything at Penney's. My mother used to buy my underwear there many years ago. Ours in the nearby mall isn't closing. I HATE big malls. I go to small drive up strip malls, mostly to TJ's and Marshalls. .

They used to be a great place to buy window coverings, blinds, made to measure draperies, etc.

Their men's underwear was great. I remember buying baby equipment and supplies there eons ago. My DD bought her nursery dresser from Penney's and some roman shades.

Haven't bought men's underwear in a while ...

... son bought some of the lower variety for my Christmas, a few years ago, let me take only one brief home, stored others as traders - I'd get another when I redeemed one of the wide-bellied ones.

Outwaited him ... got the others the next Christmas.

Unwrapped the last one, neatly bundled with scotch tape, a couple of months ago.

Probably should have mentioned that before Christmas ... maybe I did: my forgetter's grown much more active, in recent times.

Elastic girdles working well on the more mature briefs ... though they are getting somewhat worn.

Our Penney's is still going. Like Terri wrote, it is in a mall. I agree with Linda about the new pricing they tried a few years ago...not a good idea. I also find that as a plus size woman, they don't have great quality or selection.

Penney's is the easiest place to buy tall pants. Not crazy about these lower waisted pants but a decent selection, decent price

fran, you're right. Penney's could beat even box stores like Home Depot with their discounts on window coverings and they had the names brands, great sales monthly on levolor, bali, graber.

Does anyone remember when they carried fabric, or did they all even carry fabric. When ours was a downtown store, long before it moved to our mall then closed, it had a section with patterns, sewing notions and fabric. In high school, I could get yardage for a skirt for about $5 including the zipper.

Nearest Penny's is over 50 mi. from here and I've never shopped there. When we lived in CA and the kids were starting school I bought all their school clothes there, but that was in the early 70s. Yes, I remember their fabric selection, I bought many, many remnants for future use and still have some stuck away somewhere. Bought lots of double knit when I was making skating outfits for all of us.

The only time we set foot in Penny's is for DH's T-shirts, because they are the only store that carries all cotton T-shirts with pockets.
