Incredibly Loud, Extremely Close anyone?

DH and I are thinking of seeing this tomorrow, but I have a hesitation because I don't usually like kid actors. I love Tom Hanks, though. Has anyone here at the KT seen it and can tell me what they thought? Thanks!

After watching the trailer I wanted to see this movie. But when I listened to this review on NPR I realized it was not for me. I'm sure it's a fine movie for some people, but I don't go to the movies to experience horror or profound sadness.

The boy carries the film, Tom and Sandra are in it very little. As far as a film being made it is excellent, but a very strange story. I couldn't get over how the boy dresses like a kid in the 30 or 40's, no jeans, no sneakers. He runs around NYC day and night alone in his quest to find what this key will find, by the way he is a wonderful actor. If you see it let us know what you thought.

I have Perlick Fridge drawers and heartily recommend them. I think they are the best made with SZ a close second, but I also needed the 24" size. My sales person did a luxury skybox after we did our kitchen (we were the first time she'd gone installed Perlick). The original choice of fridge drawers in the sky box was another brand and the owner wasn't happy -- the original unit couldn't keep up with frequent opening and closing. Most of the units we was seemed to be made for light/occassional use in gamerooms, but the Perlick seemed to be the only 24" that would take heavy daily use. She remembered that and replaced the one in the sky box with Perlick and problem solved. You won't be disappointed with the quality or noise. The ice maker is another issue. Is that your only freezer -- no other option for making ice? How much ice do you use? We live in TX and use a lot of ice, especially recently when I had two boys in marching band and they filled gallon jugs with ice and water every day, 5-6 days a week for months, plus we had iced tea and other drinks, but our other ice consumption has actually declined 9outside of marching band) since we started chilling more drinks in the fridge drawers. We even make our iced tea with the instant hot, concentrating it and then adding a pitcher of chilled filtered water and refrigerating the pitcher. I used to go through a lot of ice for drinks in the summer, but I can now use a lot less. Maybe you can do more of that type of thing for daily use and get one of those countertop ice makers for when you entertain of need larger amounts of ice. The other thing I would do is see if you couldn't fit an icemaker into a Perlick or have Perlick add one for you. They might not warrant the icemaker, but that wouldn't be a big deal to have to go to that manufacturer for ice maker issues. I think I'd at least ask. Maybe beg a little. ;-) How big a deal is that 3" on the cabinet for you? And would you have to do it twice? Are your counters in?

(Had to scroll back to find the "nude dude". I like 'em.) I'm not a minimalist so all the "stuff" I would find interesting to visit. I'm not a fan of red rooms but so many over stuffed rooms I've seen pictures of are red so maybe that's part of the formula? The massive numbers of pillows on the sofas drive me nuts! I can imagine sitting down (daintily) and having them fall over my shoulders onto the floor, knocking the snifter of cognac out of my hand on the way down. Damage to expensive carpets be damned - I hate to waste cognac!

I hear you on the budgetary problems. Everything but feeding's currently on hold around here at the moment! You can skip the boron, copper, and zinc for the year if you need to. While the boron is impacting lawn quality, the copper and zinc were more rebalancing. Still, you can work without the boron for a bit. If you have to do just one application of the potassium sulfate, cut the others and do whatever one is convenient and affordable for you. If it's zero instead, it'll survive. Prioritizing the above, the calcium lime is the most important. Potassium is number two. Boron number three. Copper and zinc a very distant fourth and fifth. Delaying will slow down soil improvement, but that's not a problem--it just means the grass improves more slowly as well. There's nothing wrong with doing that. Pine trees: The needles actually end up near neutral, although high masses of them can smother grass. The problem with pine trees is two-fold. One, they suck up massive amounts of water and dry out the soil profile. Two, they secrete chemicals that depress out or kill other plants to eliminate competition (literal chemical warfare). Grasses rarely grow well underneath or very near pine trees when you combine the above with the increased shade from the tree itself. But with proper care, you can get the grass to flourish pretty close to the tree, just not under the canopy. Improving the soil means the grass does much better, outccompeting the weeds. It takes time, and some work, but eventually the number of invading weeds drops amazingly. They simply don't have the space to grow and can't compete with the established grasses.

The former owners of my house dropped their price over 4% the day their listing popped up into our price range. We still ended up paying 9% below their already lowered price. They were chasing the real estate market downward, and our timing was such that we bought at the bottom of the market. Additionally, they wanted to buy a home in a community that had only one unit left, so they were getting desperate to sell, having never anticipated a real estate collapse and having their house on the market for over a year. They got what the market would bear, and we offered a price that was a mixture between what we could afford and what we felt it was worth. It's not personal...most homeowners start out pricing high, hoping to see what they can get. Ultimately, they sold their house for 21% below their initial asking price, in what was already a significantly declining market. Some people make lowball offers, some people ask highball prices. Ultimately, the "fair" price is what someone will pay for what someone is selling.

Will go to see it in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, that won't help you. First is Iron Lady, then Hugo, then The Descendants. Then it will be Incredibly Loud or One for the Money. Lots of movies this year for my movie group. We only meet during the off season for golf so we have a limited time frame. Last year was a disaster during this period for the theater.

I wanted to see it but then it got bad reviews. Then I saw it was nominated for best picture. So what to do? I can take sad movies unless it's about animals That's why I won't see War Horse or even rent it.

I am like lily316. I think the fantasy of talking to your father who had died and living up to his spiritual guidance is quite wonderful and real to those of us who have well.....that is another discussion. I didn't see the reviews but I am sorry that it was panned.

A piece on "Fresh Air" panned it, too (the reviewer thought it "manipulative").

(I think I still might see it, but only after it's out on DVD, since it seems to be a real weeper for me -- I'll need to watch that in the privacy of my own home.)

We saw it and we both liked it and would recomend seeing it.
It wasn't scarry or any kind of horror. Most of the reviews that you folks have mentioned didn't even sound lik they came from the same movie.

It was about a young boy after 9-11. He needed to find his place in life after his great loss. Yes, there were some sad parts, but even I didn't slobber. Come to think of it, I didn't even blow my nose afterwards!

It was a very good story and movie. I agree, the kid was a very good actor and it was a difficult part!

I want to see it. I LOVED War Horse and The Descendants. Both were wonderful movies.
