I'm not sure about other policies and how much they would be. I'm interested in that also. Can we see pics of your new setting? I love diamonds. I just got mine fixed this weekend after having it sit in my jewelry box for months(one of the diamonds was loose). It seems like a new ring since I haven't worn it for so long!

We carry a jewelry rider on our policy, I think it costs about $1 or so per hundred of coverage. Our company asked for an appraisal on each piece that is covered, I forget how much we have... around $20,000 I believe.

Mu wedding rings are on a rider, too. Homeowner's will cover up to $5,000, but I needed $20,000.

Since my husband died last April, I don't wear them anymore, which makes theft a greater possibility, so I'm looking into a safety deposit box for them.

Yea, I guess thats what ours is...a rider on our homeowners policy. It's alot more than $1/hundred though but there isn't any maximum that they'll cover up to at least.

I used to insure mine with a rider on my homeowners, but since I never wear them, it didn't really seem worthwhile. Guess I have a different slant on it--to me, it's a lot LESS likely they'll be stolen when I have them secured in my house.

You might want to check out the post on safe deposit boxes over on the household finances board. I prefer a secure safe in my own home. Cheaper (MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper), and you have more control.

I have a special insurance policy on my diamond. The insurance company required an appraisal, plus the drawings, specifications, and certificate issued by the Gemological Institute of America. The cost isn't bad--we pay around $200 a year. But I really need to have a new appraisal because it's only insured for $20,000, and that wouldn't begin to cover its replacement now.

azzalea, thanks for the advice but I wear my rings all the time. I dont want them locked up in a safe. I'm more worried about stones falling out (even though I get it checked regularly) but I want the protection just incase.

abbysmom, here's a picture I just took although it's blurry. Diamonds are hard to photograph. The ring used to be gold and we had it reset in platinum, and the band with the solitaire was just a gold band, no side stones.

We have a Personal Articles policy. I have my rings and some other valuable items on that policy.

I don't even know how many types of insurace we have, LOL! We have to has so many to cover everything on the farm - but I do know we got the PA policy specifically for jewelry and some other valuables that wouldn't have been fully covered under out house policy. It isn't terribly expensive. We use State Farm

I'll try to remember to ask my brother-in-law about jewelry insurance. He's a Certified Master Bench Jeweler.

I have a diamond tennis bracelet that's nearly 6 carats (total weight), which I've worn constantly since I received it in January 1995. At that time the retail value of it was about $25,000 (I really don't know what it would cost to replace it now), and the cost for an insurance rider for it was more than the rest of our homeowner's policy....

My jewelry is on my Homeowners Policy and I pay about $15.00 per thousand dollars of coverage. That might be a little higher than other policies but it also has a built in 5 % inflation rate annually. That way I have increased coverage and I don't have to have them reappraised unless I want to. My jeweler is G.I.A. certified so we submitted his appraisals to the insurance company.

I was in a jewelry store recently and saw the sales person give the customer a brochure describing the insurance they sell. It only covers jewelry so it's seperate from homeowner's. My daughter was given a vintage fur and she insured it with the company that stores it in the summer. So perhaps you could call a local jeweler too ask if they sell insurance.

Lindsay's point about the jewelry insurance costing more than the house insurance can easily happen. If you take out a rider for a piece of jewelry you normally receive full coverage, there isn't a deductible. However some insurance companies will allow a deductible if you request it and that will lower the annual cost.

i have a separate policy i got thru the jewelry store that makes my jewelry. it's not cheap, $15 per thousand up to $30K and then $25 per thousand and covers inflation w/o having to have new appraisals for several yrs. since this store made the jewelry and i went thru wholesalers in the diamond district in chicago i don't have to get it reappraised for several yrs. my homeowners and umbrella policy holders would freak if they knew how much platinum diamond/sapphire jewelry i've had done in the last few yrs lol...my policies w/ them have gone up 400% over 6 yrs w/o claims (hurricane FL) so i had to find different coverage or risk total loss. ~ liz
