Furnace Tune-Up

Hello:

I have a Payne natural gas fired furnace insalled in 1996. I live in southern California, so the furnace has a fairly light workload compared to other parts of the country.

Every year around this time, I get letters in the mail recommending furnace "tune-ups". I called a local HVAC shop recommended by a neighbor and inquired about a tune-up. The proprietor said that on newer furnaces like mine it really isn't necessary, that the motor bearings are sealed so there really is no required maintenance, as long as it runs smoothly and isn't making odd noises etc.

I change the filter every three months, and regularly visually inspect inside the furnace and everything looks good and clean; the flames burn blue, and ignite quietly. Are tune-ups actually necessary? Thanks for any advice.
