need your help on inset cabinet hinges
Comments (8)Thank you everyone. We have a local cabinetmaker making these cabinets, but he has only done inset doors once before and used Euro hinges on them. For our inset cabinets in the dining room we want visible hinges that at least look like mortised hinges so that the cabinets look like ones that were originally in this 100 year old house. We thought it best to avoid mortised since it cannot be changed easily if there is an error. I got samples of the above hinges and the only ones that are big enough visually are the non-mortised extruded brass (the second ones) These create a 3/32 inch gap. http://www.myknobs.com/clb2581bz.html (Classic Brass) OR http://www.horton-brasses.com/products/hinges/butthinges/100 (Horton Brasses) The Horton Brasses ones are much less expensive. The only other option is some non-mortised wrapped steel from Classic Brass or Alno: They don't look as good, but leave a smaller (1/16 inch) gap. http://www.myknobs.com/clb2511bz.html (Classic Brass) http://www.hardwaresource.com/Store_ViewProducts.asp?Cat=952 (Alno) Does anyone know anything about the quality of any of these hinges? Has anyone used them?...See MoreCabinet inset hinges are the wrong size
Comments (2)I would worry about drilling new holes, too. Is it the finish of the hinges you don't like, or the whole style or functionality? If it's just the finish, I'd try giving them a good cleaning and then painting with a good metal paint. Then you know you'll have the perfect size. If that's not the issue, many people have had good luck with sources like Lee Valley hardware. (leevalley.com). They have an online catalog that has several pages of hinges. I'd call them and see if someone there can point you in the right direction. Here is a link that might be useful: Lee Valley...See MoreCan I have concealed hinges on inset/flush cab doors?
Comments (19)jejvtr - thanks for the pics! The partially concealed ones are the ones I always think of when I think of hinges - I mean they're the ones I grew up with myself. I really want the totally concealed kind though...although it's possible I could just give up and go for the butterfly hinges like I have on the upper cabinets but I'll try not to give up just yet! Seems there are so many down sides! antiquesilver - those pics are really helpful, thanks! And therein lies the rub - mine have a frame all around the openings. So hey - this analogy works for me!: mine are more like a regular door in a house (that people walk through). There's the door, and the frame next to the door, and they're flush with each other, and connected by a hinge, rather than the hinge being connected to the door and the wall next to the door (like in your case). Your pics make me very curious about seeing more of your cabinets from afar. I'm so curious about their style and colors. I love your cabs' interior paint...and what backsplash do you have? More pics, please. Yes that is a pretty massive hinge! I've saved the site though, thanks!...See Moresoft close doors with exposed hinges on inset doors
Comments (4)One brand I handle has them. QCCI (Quality Custom Cabinetry Inc) embeds rare earth magnets in the top and bottom of the door with aligned magnets in the rails allowing them to use soft close pistons even without the pistons they would just woosh into place. Exposed hinges are mortised instead of the wrap hinges. All standard as are 1" frames but they are pricey. Shot a quick pick of a base I had in garage. Christian has a slightly different (bit complicated) rare earth magnet system and Craftmaid (with a "C") might as well. Likely a few others at that price point....See Morechesters_house_gw
