Cindee I was just talking to my neighbors about the damage of our plants after the freeze. They said that after they saw all the bananas in the neighborhood all brown, they remember me and my bananas. They said that in Texas were they were living before, got a few freezes like we did and bananas always came back. So, I am going to leave the bananas along and see weather the leaves completely dry or they start greening. From all the bananas I have the one that look the best is also the healthiest one the NAM WA, a lady finger from Indonesia. The worse and I personally don't think is going to make it is the SIAM RUBY, who also was not looking so good before. Don't forget that I can send you seeds of other vegetables and tomatoes if you want. We can start all over. Willy

Michelle: my question is why don't we want to use plastic, and by doing so, why can't it touch the plants and leaves? You can use plastic if that's all you have, and lots of people use clear plastic wrapped around tomato cages, etc. for its greenhouse-like effects. It's just that there are better insulators than plastic. The not touching the leaves thing is probably for two reasons: 1) It's the air trapped under the plastic that insulates the plants, and where the plants touch the plastic, there is no insulation, and, since the plastic itself is a poor insulator, it will essentially conduct the cold directly onto plant parts in contact. With things like actual frost blankets, etc., there are also tiny air pockets in the cloth itself that provide insulation. Plastic doesn't have that. Think about how well you can feel hot and cold through plastic gloves vs through cloth gloves. 2) Moisture condenses easily on plastic and stays there, and parts of plants that get wet during a frost can be more damaged than parts of plants that stay dry. Frost cover, etc. tends to be breathable and wicks moisture so doesn't present this problem as badly. I don't think it's a big deal if a few bits and pieces here and there come in contact with plastic, such as would happen if you wrapped a tomato cage in plastic. But sometimes people misunderstand wrapping and do it too tightly.

We have both a water chiller and insta-hot coming out through one faucet. It's two separate units and they couldn't both fit under the sink so the chiller is in the powder room sink cabinet (the wall is shared between the kitchen sink and powder room sink so this worked out really well). There are different faucet styles available with hot and cold levers as well.

OOPS! I forgot to add what happens in Minnesota at 50 degrees, when the Italian and English cars won't start....We drive with our car windows down, Sorry about that.

It *is* a relative thing. I still chuckle about when I was in Houston attending my aunt's funeral. It was mid-January and having left MN at below zero temps, I packed a (light) jacket to use for the return trip. Left it in the suitcase. It was 65ÃÂ° the day of the funeral and sunny. The one lady there, probably late 20s, early 30s was decked out in a fur hat, a coat heavier than I owned with a huge fur collar, gloves and was shivering! Her car had a flat tire so my cousin's husband and I both threw off our suitcoats tucked our ties, rolled up our sleeves and started to change the tire. We just about had the tire off and she says "I'm sorry, I just can't stand out here any more, it's just FREEZING out here!!! I have to get in the cawr - It's just too cold!"

Currently it's -8ÃÂ°F. I wonder just what would she do....
