Ugh, tree and decorations are down...

but I don't have enough space in my storage boxes. I will have to start yet another smaller box for the few tree ornaments that I could not fit into the storage boxes. My sister gave me two new ornaments, but that does not explain the lack of space. My younger DS helped me decorate the tree when he arrived. We had had a major plumbing leak and major repair of the walls, so I had not decorated until the mess was behind us. He grabbed stuff from here and there, and that is possibly part of my repacking problem. But.... I always pack up with that dreadful feeling that I won't have enough storage room, and this year it came true!

I just brought up all the storage containers from the basement to put my stuff in. I hate this part. My dining room looks as if a bomb went off. Once I have the bins full DH will stuff them back into the storage room in the basement. I've been trying to whittle down our Christmas decorations each year but storage is always a problem.

I bit the bullet, or so I thought, by moving to a small tree. I still have too much stuff. One garland I don't use I'm going to strip all the decorations off them - LATER - hahahahahahahahaaaaa ahahahahahahahahhahahaaaaaa...more like next year when I pull it out!

Is there anything you could part with and give to charity?

Just a thought.

I take my decorations down this weekend, the weekend after all twelve days of Christmas are over. I actually saw a tree out for pick up on Christmas Day afternoon. It was so sad. On to the question....I do not re-arrange much after taking down the Christmas stuff. I used to rearrange more when I would move every few years. The stuff I had just wasn't purchased with any one particular space in mind. Each living room was a bit different size and shape and flooring color. I'd get one or two pieces before the next move and just try to make it all work somehow. However, I've lived here long enough to slowly assemble my livingroom stuff into a cohesive group. There are minor things I can and do change, but not much. Tabletop decorations and artwork are changed a bit every few months, but I wouldn't classify that as re-redecorating. This is, however, a time for a good thorough cleaning since I'll be getting behind and under everything anyway. One thing a friend does is to put up her "Christmas" village when her Christmas decorations get put away. Those villages really have very little Christmas to them, they are mostly just generic winter. For her, it keeps the physical stress of Christmas decorating AND visual stress of too much to admire at a minimum.

You ought to be 'wound down' from all you've done! And done so beautifully. You've no idea how much I look forward to (seeing) Christmas at your house each year! The berries are a nice touch to the wall basket. I really love how berries add such a big pop of color even tho they are tiny things. Definitely one of my favorite decor staples. That birch tree is just perfect for you, and what a sweet friend to send it to you. And to send Dollbaby gifts too. That painted snowflake is really wonderful, and 'somebody' knows how much you like the birdies don't they! Great gifts. Lynne, isn't it fun how often we see things we have in others decor too? Gayle, that has to be the most bizarre Christmas story ever! What a movie it would make, lol. Purely sentimental here! We never had kids, but that didn't stop us from having a young-at-heart tree. The fresh tree has always had an eclectic mix of handmade and store bought ornaments ... crocheted snowflakes and angels, stuffed Kliban cats, Spanish moss wreaths that dh made almost 30 years ago (still use 'em), terra cotta, metal, resin, straw, wood, brass, etc. Some ornaments have been retired, but I can't bring myself to toss 'em. I keep them in a separate storage bin along with the photo cards from years past. Never owned a ball ornament until last year when I bought a dozen mercury glass balls from Restoration Hardware. They're beautiful, but very heavy. This year I added glass icicles. Wish I had a couple dozen more of those in the shorter lengths. In years past I've strung popcorn and cranberries for garland. Switched to freshly harvested Spanish moss for a few years. Didn't have any garland the past couple years. This year added some beechwood cranberry garland. I love colored lights on the tree. Tried white lights for a couple years, but switched back. The 4' artificial tree in the dining room is pre-strung with white lights. I guess that tree has a nature theme with a lot of birds, fish, acorns, a few bears and a moose. After Christmas I glitz it up with Mardi Gras lights and beads until Fat Tuesday.

We've been slowly packing things away on the inside but haven't been able to get outside....too rainy and blowy. Tomorrow we should be able to undo the outside trees and put the front porch back to its pre holiday state. We've got some friends coming over on NYD for soup and chilli and I'll leave the tree that's on the back porch all decorated and full of lights. It's so pretty from inside the house; I will really miss it.

I tell myself I will be heartless in dumping any tarnished, etc. decorations. Last year I made a nice start with the intention of doing more in succeeding years. This year, I threw out two tree ornaments! Of course, we were rushed this year, but maybe next year I can more readily part with things that are showing their age. Will definitely keep DH though.

I took down the little bit of decorations I had up, except all my KT cards and my little table top tree. They will come down on Jan 6, the traditional day. I am so sick of seeing decorations up.

To me, it is always more work taking down and putting away! I did it yesterday and glad it is over!

I started out great-even cleaned the L shaped hall closet before putting 2 sets of xmas china in the back. Took down some outdoor stuff-not all. Then as I was putting bins up in the garage I fell off the ladder!! A bin fell down and either hit me or the ladder and knocked me 4 ft to the cement floor. Now my leg hurts. Hope it isn't anything bad. Darn it!
