This has to be so frustrating

Texas Task Force One, a group of professional volunteers with equipment, dogs and supplies has been waiting for two days for planes from the Air Force, they were told this afternoon it would be next week. They have heavy equipment and rescue dogs, this must be excruciating for them.

I see where the 82nd Airborne, from Ft Bragg, has arrived.

My DS was 82nd Airborne.

I've heard that there is no law and order there at all. no one in charge. The USA for all our good intent can't just go in and assume command so frustration afte frustration.

When mulching, you have to cut more frequently to avoid cutting more than 1/2" at a time. If you wait too long, you can raise the deck and cut once, then cut again the next day. As a rule, if the tires get wet on the lawn, it's too wet to mulch. If bagging is not an option, you can discharge, then either bag it a couple days later or mulch it in. The deck must be kept clean and the blade maintained sharp. Someone else can chime in with the particulars, but you can raise one end or the other higher than the other end to also help mulching. No mower mulches perfectly under all conditions - you have to use your head and use the machine to it's best advantage.

Oh, yes, dear Cathy - time to say STOP THE MADNESS! I brought in a few more PVS eggs, but left the rest outside. They're just going to have to make it or not. I also quit bringing in the BST eggs, too. They are laying eggs on the tiniest stalk (no foliage) of fennel, so there will be no food for them. This has been a record bounty year for butterflies here in Oklahoma. I don't think we EVER get this many. If we had, they would have just layed eggs on the small amount of A. clematitis that I have had in my yard for 4 years now. I have gotten out and pinched the A. clematitis and the tomentosa and they are growing new basal and side growth. But, it's nowhere near what I would need to feed all of the cats that will hatch (or not). It is fun and enjoyable, raising butterflies. But when you get all frazzled just thinking about what the rest of the day will bring, it's time to reevaluate the purpose. The bugs and predators are abundant this year. Something needs to feed them, too, because they DO have their place in nature. Mother Nature knows best and we are actually intervening. If the population was threatened, I would feel differently, but I don't think it is, unless you have got Regal Fritillaries or some such declining butterfly population. Butterflies have made it for millions of years - wow! That boggles even my mind! I think they'll make it a few more. Also, unless you're tagging the Monarchs for research purposes, I wouldn't worry about it so much. We do what we can with what we have. If I don't have my wits about me, I'm likely to not be of much help to the butterflies, my family, anyone or anything else. You're a dear, Cathy, and we all love you here, but raising butterflies should be enjoyable and enlightening. If you're feeling discouraged about it, it's no longer either of those things. Susan

Roomba and Kentwood...

I'm getting a Roomba because I fell in love with a gorgeous Kentwood white label engineered wood in Saddle strap. It's hickory and it's very dark (my husband called it black). I know I was trying to stay away from dark wood because of the upkeep with our dogs and the seed our conure likes to fling around. But just so I don't have to vacuum or Swiffer every day I think a Roomba would help with the pet hair. Has anyone had experience with Kentwood's white label floor? I love this color and I'm having a difficult time finding a color I'm "in love" with. I had at first chosen their hickory Copper City (their Originals line), but after laying it down side by side with darker and slightly darker woods, it started to look like it had pink tones in it. The Saddle strap also looks better with the pebble tile I picked out for the sliding door floor entrance and fireplace hearth. But I'm also not sure about the white label Kentwood, I would have preferred to stay in the Originals line but I would need to go back and look at the darker colors again to find something close in hickory or even oak. Searching for a wood floor has been so frustrating and difficult for me. But at least I made my decision on a Roomba! =D

Well, here it is Wednesday and still no official word. I spoke with my attorney's office on Monday and they are still trying to verify the closing on Monday. I am about to lose my mind. I think it is possible that my buyer's attorney is waiting for the other transaction to close (the buyer of his client's house) before he schedules the closing, but I can't even get confirmation of that! I am trying to stay calm but this is very disturbing. We have in our contract that if the house does not close by April 10th then we can back out. Of course we would have to give the buyer her earnest money back and the house would have to go back on the market and if there were any offers, they would likely be less than what we are getting now. I am disinclined to back out right after the 10th as long as I have a reasonable expectation that this will happen. My husband is saying that we shouldn't give them much time after the 10th to make this happen and should put the house back on the market and give her right of first refusal if we get an offer. My buyer does not have any other means to purchase the house and she has taken a big hit on hers. She wants the house, has been trying to move to this community for 2 years, so I know she is motivated. My emotions are in turmoil at this time.

I'm sure it's frustrating, but remember, Port Au Prince is a pretty small airport. It takes time to land a big cargo plane, move it out of the way, unload it, and take off again.

It's not a military base with thousands of troops already there.

They were reporting on the news here today, that another problem is that there isn't enough fuel on the island for incoming planes to refuel so they can leave. They just have too many 'parked' on the ground that can't move, apparently, so that it's difficult for more to come in, is the way it sounded to me. So they've had to stop letting many more come in.

The frustration is understandable, but there is a big logistic problem - the one airport in Haiti is wrecked. The control tower is out. Planes are being landed by personnel standing on the ground using hand held radios. There is no more room on the tarmac to park planes, and there isn't enough fuel to refuel the planes to take them away. If you need fuel to run your equipment, you have to bring it with you. That is why the arrival of the aircraft carrier is so critical. It has helicopters, fuel, doctors, and a number of hospital beds. It can also make potable water. I don't know in what quantity it can make drinkable water, but is is judged to be a very important resource.

To make matters worse, the seaport is inoperable - the cranes don't work. These are vital for off-loading a ship. Ships that have off-loaded some cargo are those who have cranes that extend over their side and are large enough to handle the containerized cargo. Once a load hits the dock, it is largely manual labor to move it away.

A big problem is that Haiti did not have a disaster plan and backup services in place. Their government buildings and infrastructure was destroyed. They are paralyzed to operate.

I am sure that more could be done if there had been a more cooperative stance developed with Haiti's neighbors. What is DR and Cuba doing? Both have airports and a host of ferry boats could move supples. The main item I hear from DR is that foriegners who can afford it, are going to DR to get flights out of the area. Why isn't there a stream of supplies flowing from the airport in DR to Haiti?

I think that there is some freight moving from D R, but many of the roads are impassable due to their being broken up, or rubble from broken buildings clogging the streets, trees fallen over, etc.
