Have to share the American Girl outfit I made (pictures)

Normally, I hate making anything this small because the arms are such a pain but it turned out very cute! It is for my dissertation chairperson's daughter in celebration of everyone surviving my doctoral program :-)

Haha! Yes, I should get a set for myself and just "keep it at my house" for when little ones come to visit. ;-D I keep going back and looking at it (first heard of Calico Critters on a morning news segment where they were featuring neat offerings from a local toy shop), and can so imagine spending hours playing with these when I was a child. I too had Liddle Kiddles, Flatsy Dolls (remember those?), and of course tons of Barbies and accessories. My niece, who is 9, might be a tad too old for the Calico Critters, although she does still play with her Littlest Pet Shop animals. I checked out the Lalaloopsy dolls and they too are very cute! The niece has asked for an American Girl doll for Christmas, and while they're adorable, they and their accessories are pretty high priced. I remember the commercials for Sylvanian Families! I was older by the time they came out, but remember that they were quite cute too. The Calico Critters have sort of a Richard Scarry look about them, and I always loved his books. Maybe that's why they especially appeal to me.

My daughter has 2 American Girl dolls plus 3 of the Target/Walmart knockoffs. DD is a budding hairdresser and the hair on the AG dolls holds up very well to her styling efforts while the cheaper dolls' hair has gotten fuzzy and nappy looking. Since she likes to style hair, she got the styling video, chair, and accessories with the doll last year for Christmas. This year she wants a My Twinn. You send the company a picture of your kid and they design the doll to look like her. BTW, the Target clothes will fit the AG doll and are much cheaper. Also my DD is very horse oriented. The AG horses are very expensive. The Target "My Generation" horses look the same and cost about half as much. Labmomma, the AG dolls are quite collectable, especially the original dolls by Pleasant Co. Saw a doll on ebay that was damaged still have bids around $70. The bitty baby you gave away was probably worth quite a bit. MH

This little girl was talking about addresses for her birthday invitations & another kid heard her........out of her mouth came "I want a dress too". They think nothing about "ordering" what they want in that class from either one of us. I guess when we are dead & gone, they will be telling their kids or grandkids about the ladies at church that made them dresses. Can't think of anything better to be remembered for!

Should I get her an American Girl doll?

Okay, you guys have convinced me! All the arguments you're using are the ones I would use with someone else, but wasn't using on myself. It's important to get exactly what you want once in awhile. It's important to fit in with your peer group. She's only young once. Wildchild, you're right that it doesn't matter why she wants it, just that she does. And Maddie_in_Ky, Sue_VA, and Paula_PA - you spoke to me, and I'd already thought of how I'd feel if she'd really sad that she didn't get the doll. It's one thing if we couldn't afford it, but that's not the case. So I'm getting a My American Girl doll with shoulder-length brown hair, brown eyes, medium skin tone, and pierced ears. Just like Chloe - and that's what she wants. Ruthieg_tx and Nikki_nj, thanks for the tip about searching eBay and Target for clothes. I found a soccer uniform (complete with shin guards, soccer socks, shoes and ball) on eBay. It's the same colors as her soccer uniform, and I think she'll like that. So thanks for all the help in figuring this out! And I love that there's a hospital if she cuts the hair off.:)

I am so impressed. What does the WV mean. This present will be a big success.

What did you do your dissertation on?

I love the outfits. I had an afterschool American Girl Club when I taught at am elementary school where the girls were very poor. Lovingly they took a turn combing and braiding the doll's hair. We had Addie. I read her story as they listened and got lost in her world. Of course we had a tea for the girls and their mothers at the end of the school year. We kept it real.

So expensive to own them.

I have friends whose children have and want the furniture and all the other stuff that The American Girl has. We have a store here. They have so many dolls and I wish at least one little girl would understand how precious it would be to give up one of theirs to the school where I taught.

Nice job - I'm impressed that West Virginia U. has fabric with the school initials and it looks like their sport teams too.
