Pam, I wish you hadn't posted this. I now have a serious craving for one of my all time favorite foods.
Krispy Kreme is probably my favorite. The closest Krispy Kreme store is over two hours away.... :( ....but that is a good thing otherwise I would eat way too many.

Grocery store doughnuts do not even come close to the flavor and texture of a really good glazed raised doughnut.

I have made them myself but never perfected what I want.
I also like a good Long John...the kind with the whipped cream type filling, not custard. Glazed or with white icing, chocolate icing just detracts IMO.

I suspect that the wonderful old time doughnuts were fried in a lard/shortening type fat that so many frown on now.

That being said, I do miss Voodoo Donuts in Portland. JohnLiu, pick one up for me, will ya?

Guess I'll be heading to Dunkin' Donuts on the way home. This is a celebration to last the weekend.

How timely. We are camping down the Oregon coast this summer and I was just reading about Voodoo doughnuts and put it on my "must stop" list. Certainly does not look like your average doughnut shop. Here in Canada, Tim Horton's is the word for doughnuts and their apple fritters are my favourite.

I had my first warm Kripie Kreme years ago in Kansas City. YUM! They showed up in the Tulsa Metro a few years back. My favorite doughnuts are the cake type ones. Maple icing being my fave. Although those filled long john ones are great too. Nope, still want my cake doughnut if I had to pick.

Jane, I've heard that Tim's has the best coffee too. I like Dunkin Donuts coffee beans that I can buy at the store now. Still miss my beans from Big Valley, they were the best.

No Contest! Tim Horton's old fashioned sour cream glazed. No wonder Krispie Kreme crashed and burned in Canada...

Krispy Kreme isn't doing so hot here in Michigan either, there's one in Grand Rapids but frankly, Dunkin' Donuts has better donuts than they do.

We did have donuts at the office today, from the local bakery. Mine was a cake donut rolled in cinnamon sugar but like David, I'd rather have it with maple icing, yum.

I never even heard of Tim Horton's. For some reason, I got it mixed up with Bob Evans (one of the worst places I ever ate). I just looked at Horton's site and the closest ones are around NYC. However, there is a coupon for a free doughnut on the USA site in honor of Doughnut Day. Is it worth the drive to NYC? Mmmm, maybe not.

When my DD and I were traveling in the Maritimes some years ago, we made a point of stopping at Tim Horton's for tea and doughnuts every morning - what a treat.

When my XH and I were sailing off the coast of BC back in the late 90's, one of the Vancouver radio stations had a contest which really made us laugh. It was called "Cop or no Cop." The host would call a local doughnut shop and a listener, on the phone, had to guess if there was a police officer in the shop. The couple of days we listened, the best answer was usually to guess that there was. I hope the police took it with good humor (humour), I'm not sure they would here.

There are no Tim Horton's in Grand Rapids, but there are a bunch of them in the Lansing area and East, also south because we've stopped at one outside of Columbus, Ohio. Closer to Canada, maybe?

At any rate, they have some great coffee, good donuts and some relatively passable bagels.

Oh thank goodness I didn't know this this morning or I might've gotten doughnuts instead of going for a jog! My favorite doughnut has always been a filled maple long john- custard, not whipped stuff. Hard to find anymore, at least around here. Ironically, I was reminiscing about our old doughnut shops with a friend today. Now the only places in town that bake doughnuts are the grocery stores.

Jane I have been to VooDoo doughtnuts downtown in Portland many times and it IS amazing. A couple of things to bear in mind. First, they are doing major construction on the downtown location and when I was there three weeks ago it was closed. Not sure how long that is going on. Second at times there is a mad wait. How mad you ask? I once waited in line on the street for one hour exactly. So pick your time to visit with care. And enjoy! Great doughnuts.

Tim Horton is badly maligned in Connecticut. I'm displeased with them for the way they treated their local employees plus the fact that since they closed their stores the company has NOT maintained any of the sites. They look just like the abandoned buildings that they are...locals are trying to get the company to do some maintenance or have the town do it & send them the bill.

We have a local bakery that makes yummy donuts but all they offer are glazed yeast raised. I love 'em but DH wants his Dunkin's coffee. New Englanders LOVE donuts. We are a village of 4,000 souls but have 2 Starbucks & 2 Dunkins & it's not enough. :) I do like our new Dunkin's though - it's got leather sofas, lounge chairs, the newspaper, & a couple computers. Fun on a Saturday morning to get caught up on what's going on around town.

I was at the farmers market today a picked up a little bag of "those little donuts", rolled in cinnamon sugar. Those are the best, in my opinion.

As a good Canadian girl though, I do have a favorite Tim Hortons donut, the sour cream glazed.

There's a local bakery here that also makes a killer apple fritter. The thing is almost as big as my head, with lots of chunks of apple and lots of crispy nubs all over it. Soooo good!

Proof that life is not fair...my town is the same size, but I have to drive 30 miles for my Starbucks!

Thanks for the tip Kate. Major construction + RV = cranky husband - I will plan carefully. Funny how many have mentioned sour cream glazed at Timmy's - that's my second favourite!
I was surprised about TH's in your town Tricia. Here they are very community minded and employ a lot of young people, allowing them to work around their classes and studying.

Yeah, me too. Not often do we encounter such blantant bad behavior from a large corporation.

But, it wasn't just my village. I could understand closing an underperforming location, or two.

That's not what Tim Horton's did though.

They closed every shop in the state simultaneously WITHOUT notifying employees or franchise owners. They ran out of the state under cover of darkness like a thief in the night.

Some people had owned their franchises less than two years. I remember one couple who had recently received their franchise as a wedding present from the bride's parents. The parents ended up losing their personal residence & car when Tim Horton's fled. The couple had to sue to get the franchise refund due under the terms of their contract with TH's.

TH's wouldn't even meet with the employees until local media forced the situation. Then, they agreed to employment counseling & offered franchise owners other "opportunities" in the mid-west. Nobody took them up on the "offer".

Tim Horton is a poster child for poor corporate citizenship in Connecticut and it's a well earned reputation.

Coffee was the problem that caused TH's financial losses in Connecticut. Their donuts, sandwiches, etc. were good. Sure, there were some that liked the coffee but too few to meet Wall Street's expectations. Repeatedly, TH's Connecticut customers asked the company for a lighter coffee blend. Repeatedly, TH's response was, "You'll get used to it!" (That's a quote from TH's, BTW...this TH versus the people of CT was a BIG hoopla for a long time.)

New Englanders, as a group, are known for being shall we say, "individual thinkers". Connecticut customers were not going to be told how they will drink their coffee. So, they just went elsewhere for that morning cuppa Joe & a donut.

TH's also refused to advertise locally. They also refused to help sponsor youth athletic programs, community fun runs, festivals, concerts, etc. like their competition so graciously does without complaint.

And now TH has made a corporation decision to allow their empty buildings to sit without any maintenance. We have one here in Mystic. It's in a PRIME location downtown. A blight on our most prominant part of town reminding us every day of how those employees/franchise owners were treated.

Good riddance to Tim Horton's. BTW, it was't just Connecticut. They also fled our little neighbor to the east, Rhode Island, for the same reasons and coordinated their stealth flight for the same night. Oh, and while I'm on a toot...they couldn't even get their geopgraphy correct. After all the local hoopla TH made an official corporate announcement of their closings in the local newspapers. They said, "We are closing our stores in Providence, Connecticut, and Rhode Island..." Geesh.
