Backsplash opinions please!
Comments (15)Thanks for all the great opinions and encouragement! EAM44 - I definitely like the solid stainless behind the stove...that looks great! Easy to clean? badgergal...beautiful tile! I love those colors...and agree that it looks awesome just behind the cooktop and hood. ellendi...thanks for your thoughts...I too am still concerned even the spots under the counters may overwhelm the room. juliet11...I think you've hit the nail on the head (the contemporary look versus traditional). I am going more traditional with the rest of the room...I would probably pick traditional hardware on the cabinets as well. The kitchen table we have is a long farmhouse table that is pretty rustic (diy). Our floors are stained concrete to look like large tile. I haven't found a backsplash that I love, but I like the idea of picking a tile that is one color, similar to the color of the walls...maybe subway tile? Is it possible to put BS on a piece of plywood and semi-temporarily attach it to the wall? Not sure how it would work with the outlets...but it seems I've seen that suggestion but haven't ever seen how it can be actually implemented. I don't mind spending the $ on the BS if we change it out in a few years, but I do mind having to spend the time on tearing it out...would be much nicer to just unscrew the sheet of it and replace it with something new :)...See MoreMy turn for backsplash opinions? - and sneak peek
Comments (12)kimiko232 -- I really like the cement tiles too; they are very cool. It remains to be seen if we are cool enough ourselves to pull them off. ha! Those California tiles are beautiful. I thought of diamonds but might just do running bond if I use 4x4's; there are only so many patterns you can do with square tile! One tile place showed alternating horizontal rows of rectangular and square tile, and that looked really nice, though a more modern look. WindyCityLindy -- thank you! The wood countertop is kind of an experiment. :) I figure that at least the bottom course of tiles had better not be too expensive in case we have to change it out in a few years! (not planning to though!) Ellendi -- yes, I wondered the same thing, if it would look less sterile/boring once all our junk was back on the counters. I really like blue and white (our dishes are blue willow); I think my challenge with delft would be to keep it from looking too country with the wood countertops. Otislilly -- one of the tile showrooms had row after row after row of tumbled stone, so your comment made me smile (the sales guy there said the same thing). I think I want to go a little more retro/vintage in this house. Slate could possibly work, I'll have to look. Thanks for weighing in!...See Moreyour opinions please - backsplash/floor w/green countertops
Comments (16)Once mocking it up, I see your Fog more with the counter than your Platinum. I still like the green/blue Kiwi for the bs best followed by the Khaki. The Fog seems a little too perky/powdery IMHO. The Kiwi seems more conventional and the Khaki is more edgy. I think the Kiwi will highlight the yellow olive tones more. The Khaki will make you notice the blue-teal shades. I tend to go with cool tones, so for me to have picked the floor choice in a more tan/orange is a departure for me. My kitchen is white/gray/black/lavender/chrome, so you can see where my color scheme heads... I like the "Madrid Brown" from your website of the Platinum because it plays up the orange of the cabs and the small parts of it in your stone. I did not want the same color as your cabs though because that could be dark and monotone when paired too closely. I'd definitely get your stone installed before picking the bs and then pick your paint color last....See MoreBacksplash options: opinions please?
Comments (33)Looking back at your options, the most pleasing looking to me is the painted wood. Something about a different backsplash only behind the stove, and actually only visible just above the stove back, seems like an abrupt pattern change. I think the simplicity of the wood all around is very pleasant especially with your wood hood. I think the different backsplash interrupts the eye. Since I mentioned about the back of the peninsula, can you share a little about that feature, like the material and design. Is that a definite feature in your plan? If so, it would be nice to bring that in somewhere else - not sure I'm liking the option I posted above, it was just to spur an idea. If anything make it smaller and more like a frame for something, like that pretty green tile you posted. I like the way the SS panel looks in the renderings in that it coordinates well with the refrigerator and DW but those are new appliances. I imagine your vintage range has shiny chrome? Are there colored knobs? If anything I would tie those in to backsplash. A couple ideas in pics below - the painted wood all around with some copper pots (or could be utensils) hanging above your stove. Or a tile/art piece - it's difficult to tell in my pic but the green in there is actually your tiles . Again with the wood, I just think that really goes with the vintage feel in your kitchen. Paint it with durable washable paint, always a good idea in a kitchen anyway. And if wood is too scary for the cleaning aspect, what about those composite-type products, something that looks like wood - I don't have suggestions but think there are options. Looking forward to more of your plans. I am contemplating what to do behind my stove too - am thinking either all tile and I also considered shiplap wood too....See Moreinspiredisabel
