Why not call the manufactuer and complain? I'd never buy a new lid when the old one is defective. Jarden Corp. is the parent company.

I've had good luck getting replacements of defective products from cookware/kitchenware companies. I write a detailed email, note my generally high regard for their products, attach photos of the failed part, and request a replacement.

Most recently, Chantal sent me a new copper teakettle when I showed them that the copper plating on my old one (only 2 years old!) was failing all over the place. Nice to see they stand behind their products.

Personally, I'd try Jarden's customer service folks. It should be pretty straightforward really. If no satisfaction, then start climbing the org chart.

I called their customer service and they said they would send me a new lid, no charge this time. Lucky for them, I would have jumped through the phone and slapped somebody if they said I needed to pay again. lol I was very unhappy when I had to pay for the first replacement.

The new lid will not be hinged like the other ones and only has a handle on the top middle, so hopefully it will be more durable. The rep assured me that my crock pot is still safe. That's the most important thing.

I'll link below what it looks like. Both the hinge at the back and the handle in the front cracked. The middle handle that you lift the whole lid off with didn't crack. The new lid will only have the middle handle. It won't be hinged anymore but I guess I can live with that.

I know that crock pots are meant to be left on while you're away (that's the whole point, right?) but I always make sure to situate mine so that even if it blew up, it wouldn't set fire...

For example, I might leave it on the cement patio or my granite kitchen island. In my old apartment, I set it going on the cement floor of my garage. Years ago, when I had none of these options, I bought an extra ironing board cover, and folded that underneath it, figuring such covers were designed not to catch fire easily.

Probably overkill, but I've always been nervous about leaving any electrical appliance on when I'm not home.

Elery is a licensed electrician although he doesn't do that work much anymore since he became a supervisor, and he assures me that if your home is properly wired you will blow a breaker way before a crockpot will explode.

That said, I'd not leave a hot crockpot sitting right under my cupboards or in an enclosed place, etc. Of course, I wouldn't leave a towel next to the lit burner on my gas stove or anything like that, either.

As for the lid problem, I've never seen a hinged lid and I've used my old crockpot for years without problems. Well, I do have one problem, I take a crockpot somewhere for a potluck or something and I leave it there and forget where it is and end up buying another one. Right now I'm using my mother's old Corningware slow cooker and I actually like it better than my last Rival.

I'm glad they gave you a new lid, though, it gives me a little more faith in their customer service.

I would hate a crock pot with a hinged lid. Even if it didn't break all the time, it seems it would get in the way. In my kitchen, I wouldn't be able to open it up all the way without it hitting the upper cabinets. I'm glad they're working with you this time. In my mind, you shouldn't have had to pay for the first one.

I'm not getting how a crock pot could explode.

Sally, I don't think it's physically possible for a crockpot to "explode" because there is no internal pressure, the lid does not seal, other than with vapor from the cooking contents. The inner crock could break, but that should be contained by the metal outer piece.

There could be an electrical short and it could catch on fire, but that's the kind of thing that would cause a breaker to blow before the thing generated problems. Because a crockpot is actually a very simple appliance and has few parts which could fail, problems are extremely rare but it is possible.

My biggest concern would be sitting it inside an "appliance garage" or a confined space and creating enough heat to cause damage to the counter, cupboards, etc. The instructions are very clear in that it should be placed on a non-flammable surface because the outside can get hot. i9t should also not be anywhere kids or pets could dump the hot contents on themselves, but that's pretty basic too.

I have one friend who sits her crockpot on the middle of her stove, between the burners, because it's heat and fire proof, and one who sits hers on top of a metal cookie sheet with sides to protect her new counter tops.

Of course, we've had three houses actually explode in this county from people leaving gas ovens on and going away, and other people say they do that all the time, so I suppose anything's possible.

The knob on my plastic lid snapped off leaving a hole in the middle of the lid. I glued it back on and that lasted one time using it. Then it snapped off again. So now I use a metal lid from a different pot that just happens to fit pretty good but not perfectly. But I'd love a new lid.

I think I'll call customer service and see if I can get a new one.

Actually, I was being facetious when I used the word, "explode." I don't imagine a crock pot could explode. I'm just a little paranoid about leaving electrical appliances running when I'm not at home.

Do you unplug your refrigerator? Unless you've got really old wiring and frayed cords, I think the danger of a slow cooker is minimal.

Glad the customer service people came through. I'm big with the phoned-in whining.

I think they are really building cheap now. I just have the round crock pot, not hinged, but the handle broke off the lid within a year. I should contact the company I guess.

That's true, ideefixe. I guess I never really thought about that...I think the whole phobia came from my Mom. She had a penchant for telling us gruesome stories about accidents that happened to children who didn't listen to their mothers, to impress her warnings in our minds, I guess. Anyway, we were told that if we used a butter knife to unwedge toast that got stuck in a toaster, without unplugging it first, we'd electrocute ourselves. To this day, I use a wooden chopstick to fish my toast out if it gets stuck. I KNOW I'm not going to electrocute myself, but the little girl inside me still has her say! LOL!

I thought the butter knife or fork in the toaster was a sure fire way to get electrocuted?? No?

Seems so to me, too. Does anybody stick metal into a toaster?

Remember when we were young getting tiny little buzzes from electric outlets if you touched it with a wet hand? My parents made a huge deal about not touching electric outlets or lamp switches or toggle switches with wet hands because we could get electrocuted. My brothers and I played a bit with wet hands and electricity just to feel the buzz. That buzz doesn't happen any more, and I have gotten sloppy about touching with wet hands. My kids don't even know what I'm talking about with the buzz.

Yeah, I was always taught not to stick the metal knife into the toaster. I still do it though. Never even got a shock. I dunno, maybe if you don't hear from me ever again, you'll know what happened to me!

I get static shock often enough, I'm not stickig anything metal in my toaster.

I have that same one except there is no handle on the top.

The hinge broke the very first time I used it. DH used some sort of glue and glued it back together but it's just a matter of time before it breaks again.

What kind of person doesn't listen to their mother! It's a wonder you people are still alive. lol I always unplug the toaster first and dry my hands before flipping a light switch. : )

Thanks for your replies about the crock pot. I wish I had thought to ask for a $15 refund for the first replacement lid now that they've figured out that they weren't made well to begin with.

I'm using my mom's 35 year old crockpot, but its big so I was thinking of buying a new smaller one for certain recipes. Now I know not to get one with a hinged lid! I do worry about the old cord, but it doesn't get warm or anything so I guess its still ok.
(Last recipe was raisins armagnac, yum!)

Put me on the list of having the same crock pot with a broken lid!!!!

Mine came apart at the hinged part and dropped 2 small screws INTO THE FOOD!!!!

Luckly DH spotted the issue right away and we were able to get the screws out before anyone had anything out of it.

I tried email their customer service and got no response.

Oh, this is too funny. I use an old pair of metal ice tongs to fish toast out of my toaster, and also feel like I MUST be living dangerously when I do it. I approach it much like that old game of ''Operation'' when I do! I've never gotten buzzed yet, which is probably why I still like to play.

I use a knife or whatever's handy to fish the bread out of the toaster. My mom probably taught me to do otherwise, but I got to thinking logically (something she rarely did) and realized that it's not likely to get electrocuted by sticking a knife in the toaster. Otherwise, why would they make the toaster compartments deeper than the bread? I mean, come on, they do it on purpose so we have to be tempted to stick a knife into the blasted thing.

The only time I've had trouble with a crock pot lid breaking was my fault. I dropped it and it shattered. Unfortunately, I can't blame that one on the company, as much as I'd like to.

Christie -- check the thrift stores for Rival's 1983 model. Burnt orange, harvest gold & olive green were the fashionable color choices. Mine was a wedding gift and still works perfectly :-)

Friends, don't be poking metal utensils at electrified appliances or outlet plugs. That's how I ruined my scout knife and gave myself a big old shock!

I've never had any issues about leaving my crockpot on while I'm not at home. I usually plug mine in and either place it on top of my glass-top stove or on a wooden cutting board or trivet to protect the counter tops.

As far as fishing stuff out of the toaster...I use a plastic spoon or knife! :-)
