Trane/Carrier options for replacing coil/furnace before condensor

The 20 year old furnace/coil finally blew out so I will replace all the interior heating and AC parts. The rooftop 2-ton 10 Seer Carrier condensor is fairly new, because I got that in 2006. For now what I have in mind is to pair up the existing condensor with much more efficient interior parts, either Trane or Carrier. I'll replace the condensor later. Could I use 3-ton interior parts with the 2-ton condensor so that in a few years I can upgrade the condensor to a larger one? I can afford between $2,000 to $4,000 for the interior upgrade. With that kind of budget what would be the best equipment combination for comfort and efficiency? Should I start looking into 14 Seer or 19 Seer? Would a super-high Seer model even work with the existing condensor?
