Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright....... (photo)

Wanted you guys to see what we drove 100 miles one way today to do - this was my birthday present from Twinkie - a chance to hold and give a bottle to - a beautiful little baby girl tiger cub! I've wanted to do this my whole life and when she was handed to me, the tears just flooded my eyes!!

Crummy photos of me, but picture Ya Ya - HAPPY! LOL

Oh, my gosh! An experience of a lifetime!! I can totally understand why you were so excited to get to do this. Twinkie is wonderful to give this gift to you.

That little cub looks mighty interested in your necklace in the second photo. :-)

This plant comes from the Cape Province Karoo,Namaqualand. We saw them growing and in flower on the Hillsides. The flowers are a light Salmon or coral color. I don't know what your temperatures are where you live, you didn't tell us, but they were growing out in the open with fast drainage among the rocks. I have seen them burn with the cold, and look terrible. Mine hasn't done well in my garden, so the decision is going to be up to you what is best for your plant, I can never find growing conditions in any book for any or the plants. Don't have the true tiger lilies personally (they grow wild here and are the ones with the little bulblets or whatever they are called, helps them repro faster, NOT the ditch lilies which I don't like). Anyway, when naturalized in mass plantings, they don't look too bad leaning, looks rather nice actually, have posted this photo before. One nice thing about them apart from covering difficult spots is that they get so thick they tend to crowd out most weeds and grass and require no care whatsoever once established. When not blooming, the foliage looks better than bare, tall grass or whatnot. Where I saw these they are on a northern exposure slope, entirely covered with them for many square yards, and they all lean out enough so they can catch the eastern and western sun, really a pretty sight. I had asked for some, the husband said I could, wanted to wait until fall to dig about 6, then there was an issue regarding me, and they were all sprayed, hardly one left. Couple years later, they are all back better than ever. I'll get some from someone else or buy if I figure out a good place to plant them where they can spread.

Hello Everyone, Hi HUnter!!! I know how it is on the Palm forum!!! LOL That is another "love" that i have... but i cant plant any more in the yard. Containers is a different story!!! : ) I just picked up a Christmas Palm and a Pigmy Date Palm at a local stand ..i couldnt pass them up!!! Glad you are having a great time with the Palms and the Plumeria... You are so lucky to have this interest at such an early age...BRAVO!!! Keep up the good work, i know some people dont understand the excitement of seeing a seedling, but as you know i do understand!!! Dont let anyone discourage you from the joy that you find in your success!!! My favorite? Oh MY!!!! LOL... that is a very hard question.. This summer my over all favorite is the Lani!!! The beauty of this tree has been such a joy!!! The Black Tiger has been close to the top as well!!! The deep color of this red is impressive. Last summer i really enjoyed Daisy Wilcox..the beauty of the blooms were amazing as well as the scent!! Very fragrant. OK..now you have me thinking of another favorite... Elizabeth Thorton Lemon Drop!!! this is another must have. With the cold approaching up your way, yes...take them inside. I dont let them see temps drop below 45* Some let them go lower, but i watch the lows forcasted and i will bring them all inside when the te,ps start to drop here in VB. I think i have a few more weeks left. We are having an cold spell here, but i think the temps will bounce back to normal. I have left them alone. You are in Ohio, so you need to bring them in. They will go dormant and will drop their leaves. You can let them just relax during the winter, but dont forget to water just a little. It is hard the first winter when they go dormant with the needs of water. Just remember even thought they are dormant, they do have their needs...water very sparingly. The tree that i sent to you is potted in Al's Gritty Mix and needs more water then the average mix. This mix is very fast draining and will need to be watered a little more. You want to keep it alive even while it is sleeping. It really depends how you store them . Send me an e,mail and i will help you with the needs of your trees... Keep up the good work Hunter.. Hope school is going well for you!!! Those Foxtail seedlings look great BTW!!!! The palms have been in the ground for about 17 years. They have been fun to grow and do make my day when i come home and see Palms here in VB. I planted them when very few would even think about growing Cold hardy Palms in my area. I ordered one of these online and it came today with the flower looking to be a bit dried up if not dead entirely (will post a pic once I'm on my laptop). The bloom was brown at the edges and shriveled with little to no yellow coloring :-( All the other plants that came were in perfect condition from a reputable nursery, so I don't think it's a matter of poor quality but rather lack of light from being boxed up during the journey? It was only in transit for 2-3 days max, and I now have it and the rest of the newbies sitting in fairly indirect sunlight to acclamate them back to full/bright sun exposure. Planning to repot in gritty mix within the next day or two, but was wondering if the flower will revive once in its new home, or will a new one begin to sprout in its place?

Oh, Ya Ya what an experience that you will always remember! And the pictures are beautiful. What a sweetheart she is, but like all babies she must grow up to what she is a tiger, as she should.

Betsy, she was one of three tiger cubs on exhibit at the Big Buck Classic Show in Little Rock, AR. The man who shows them said his family has raised tigers for years. She never growled, as such, but made little growly, contented sounds, especially when I was giving her her bottle.

I kept kissing the top of her little head and feeling of her the whole time.

It was incredible!

DGS Hunter got to do that(he was 4) when a circus came through town. He has a picture with him and his Dad feeding the tiger. Talked about it quite awhile too!

Wow! Do they not worry about people giving the babies germs? I would love an experience like that! Only wild critter I have toughed was a snake when I was a kid, and rode an elephant at a fair of some sort.

My birthday isn't until Feb. 8, but the tigers wouldn't be there for that. LOL Hey, whatever day they were there I consider my birthday! LOL

The only thing wrong with those photos is that I'm not in 'em with you! YaYa, you look beautiful and radiant and oh, so happy!

We have a big cat place near us here in Eureka Springs, called Turpentine Creek, and they used to bring the cubs out and about, I guess for advertising, so I've gotten to pet the cubs but never held one like you're doing. I bet that little guy was heavy!

Twinkie did good, what a clever gift.
