Here in my neck of the woods (in NW Florida) it reached 65 degrees and partially sunny - sprinkling rain at the moment.

It was -15 -16 this morning. Still -12 at 4:30 pm. Windchill was almost -40 here.

AMAZING: I briefly saw a few rays of sunshine, this afternoon. BRIEFLY!

What you're having is headed our way.
Minus 23 tomorrow morning; windchills are -35 to -40.

Ohio.......snow, snow, and more snow. Temps are in low 20s today but supposed to get much colder the next few days. But after I read some of the below zero temps, I'll temper my complaining a bit. lol

80 today in orlando, beautiful week too! we pay dearly in the 6 months of mid 90's w/ 99% humidity lol ~ liz

DH and I are at our little condo at Maui Kamaole in Kihei, Hawaii. It's 2 p.m. Temp is a pleasant 70F, with a light breeze -- and breaching whales. We've been shopping for a replacement A/C; guests will need that in a month or two.

HOWEVER, there were big rainstorms from the time we arrived Jan. 10 on through Jan. 13. Rivers of mud from Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains swamped low-lying properties before running off into the ocean. Our complex is built up the side of a small hill above the beach; no damages here. Yesterday I could still see brown-water in Maalaea Bay and along the seafront, but the surfers are out. On Oahu they are HOPING for high winds so they can hold The Eddie surfing championships along their north shore.

At our home north of Chicago it's COLD with plenty of snowcover. We got out just before a big snow dump. At least we've had a sunny winter despite the cold. I'll take cold and sunny over slightly above freezing, overcast skies, rain and ice.

It's going to be 24 in Tyler, TX tonight. We're NOT used to this! I'm sitting by a fire w/ a coat on. Nope!! We're not used to this.

It's cold here, but I can't compete with North Dakota!

Snow is falling again, on top of several inches of frozen slush. I just came in from trying to fish some firewood out from under the ice-covered tarp. It wasn't easy. My porch rack is full, so I guess I'll have enough for a few days. I'm always amazed at how quickly it gets used up, though.

For the next week our temps are supposed to be in the low teens during the day, and single digits or below at night, with much lower wind chills day and night. We're supposed to get about 5" of snow tonight and 3" more tomorrow. I'm so glad I don't have to drive to work in this!

How do y'all stand those frigid temperatures? I always wonder about how people heat. Does your heater run constantly? Does everyone use gas/propane or do some have electric heat? Supplemental heat in various rooms? I imagine about the layers of clothing and if it makes it difficult to get in and out of your cars and if you're having to stripe off clothes and put them back on in a course of a day. Do you start your car to get the inside warm before you take off for the day? Fill me in on what it's like to live in a cold climate.

Almost 10 PM, 38 degrees and I'm freezing! :)

-1 tonight with a wind chill of -25 later on.

Moonie, Somehow I thought you lived in Canada! I was wrong. LOL
The cold is the pits. I am SO thankful I don't have to work outside!
We have natural gas for heat in town. Propane or electric heat in the country. Well wait, a GF has electric heat and she lives in town. LOL No supplemental heat here, just central heating. No it doesn't run constantly, our homes are pretty well insulated.
I don't strip off layers of clothes in a day, I usually just wear socks and jeans and a long sleeve shirt, sometimes a zip up hooded sweatshirt but that comes off if I get warm or put my down jacket on. Wear tennis shoes or clogs most every day.
Gloves (sometimes I wear 2 pair) and caps and snowboots for shoveling. Otherwise don't usually wear them myself.
Yes we start outside cars and let them warm up, 10-20 minutes. Its easier on the car if you do. We have an old car outside we've driven this winter. The cars have block heaters to plug in to an electrical outlet to help them start easier on the mornings when its -20 or colder.

What's it like living in a cold climate? If you're me, you count the days til spring and summer! I adore warm temps. 80 to 90 degrees and I soak it up. Summer is never long enough.

We have had so much snow here in my end of ND that flooding is a sure thing. I don't live by water, but the land is so flat there is lots overland flooding I think we had around 30 inches of snow in the month of December alone. First snow (8 inches) was a week before Halloween. We can and have gotten snow storms of 12 inches or more well into April. Not always thank goodness!

It's 9:15 pm and -15 which is "supposed" to be our low for tonight. They have been wrong many times though. Oh and the wind chill is -33.

Here is what I have tonight for weather:
Tonight: Snow showers after midnight. Temperature rising to around -9 by 5am. Wind chill values as low as -35. South wind between 10 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

It's cold here, snowed most of the day. We got a couple inches on the ground. School let out this morning at 11:30, kinda ticked me off because I dropped the girls off and then had to turn around almost to go pick them back up again. One of them anyway, Lauren walked with her friends to McD's and then to her friend's house and Maria hung out with her boyfriend...but still. I hate the cold and wish I lived in Hawaii.

School has been canceled for tomorrow too.

-2 for the low tonight here. About 10 inches of snow on the ground already and more forecast over the next few days. Feeling like I am pretty lucky to be in 'warm' Missouri though after reading the temperatures the rest of you are dealing with.

I find it amazing that you dress the same in cold country as we do here. (North Carolina, near the Outer Banks) Although I do own a couple pairs of gloves, I seldom wear them. Only occasionally do I have to scrape frost off the windshield and usually just bite the bullet and do it without gloves. LOL

So far this year, we've had more snow than normal, and only half way through winter. Early December, 5 inches, another 2 inches, then 8 inches the day after Christmas.

Insulation is the key, yes! Just out of curiousity, who knows the R value of their insulation? Ours is R13. (I looked in our unfinished utility room :)

Connie (nodakgal) gets colder and nastier weather than I do most of the time. She is near the Red River which does flood, so the weather is more damp. I am close to Minot, but closer to the Canadian border so I get the Alberta clippers and artic blasts. Most of the time we get the "dry"cold, that is less moisture which is easier to deal with unless it is windy. We listen to the radio/TV and do watch the warnings and road conditions. ND has a great website which tells us what the road is-from green, blue, purple, yellow (ice) and red which means NO traveling. Since we are Calif transplants we tend to be more cautious. I have slide a few times on the compacted ice and drove into the ditch last year. As to clothes, I have a great pair of boots called Toe Warmers made it Canada and my feet never get cold. I also have a pair of lined leather gloves from Hansen Leather shop, so my hands are usually ok. Most of the time I just wear the leather tennis shoes. I do layer the clothes, with sweatshirts, and good pants, but then most of the time the cold doesn't bother me. It does hubby as he is diabetic with other health issues. He tries not to breathe the cold air. I think our blood thickens up in the winter and the children born between Sept and about April seem to do better. The little ones are trained early and do better than the adults and it amazes me the babies do so well, all bundled up and zipped up in the carriers. Oh yes we do start the car and let it warm up and do have plug in heaters if needed. We watch the gas, and try not let it get below half and do carry emergency items, cell phones and I have OnStar. Today there were cars in every parking lot running without people as they start their cars, and most cars automatic lock, but that helps. We learn to slow down and not go around curves fast Just a different way of living. Oh yes, always a hat.

Right now it's -14°F with 10 mph wind. Gives a -33°F windchill (-38° windchill under the old method but we got sick of the wusses so revised it down a bit.) Wind Chill Advisory in effect until tomorrow here. Up north, it's colder so Dottie, Phyllis, Nodakgal and Marie (and of course others), bundle up!

National Weather Service just instituted an "Extreme Cold Warning" option a week or two ago since a lot of new people to the area who aren't used to cold weather didn't seem to understand wind chill and cold temperatures so they started the Extreme Cold Warning (on an experimental basis) when it's below -35°F with winds less than 5 miles per hour. It's been placed into effect for the first time tonight up north. I see it's currently -35°F in some parts of nw MN. Winds are calm but looks like it could drop a few more degrees overnight. I feel sorry for the critters in this weather.

Moonie, most houses are well-insulated here. Especially newer houses. Manufactured homes must be well insulated by law to be put in this area. They'll let the flimsier/cheaper ones go for the southern states but not here.

It's 72° where I'm sitting in my living room. I'm wearing a t-shirt and light flannel pants. I'm very comfortable. I have natural gas heat. Tonight I did close my drapes, they're insulated and will help block some cold air from the windows but as long as the heat keeps going, I'm fine. During the day I like to let the sun shine in for the heat, when the sun is out, and well I like to see out too! No the heat doesn't run constantly. When it's well below zero, yes it runs often though. During the day when the sun is shining, the heat doesn't run much when the sun shines in the windows. I close off rooms I don't use and don't heat them much. The basement will be cooler but still not frigid. I'll still walk down the basement barefoot for whatever I need to do, which reminds me, I have some clothes in the washer that need to go into the dryer.

To understand it better, think of it as it is, the reverse of hot weather! You run a/c in the hot weather. You close the doors. When it's over 100° it will run a lot more than when it's 80°. Your feet won't burn on the floors.

I have my vehicle in the garage so that helps. It's an attached garage so it'll be a touch warmer than many detached. I seldom let my vehicles warm up too much, though in this kind of weather I'll usually run them a bit. Most experts feel it doesn't help much to run them without driving. Let them loosen up a couple minutes but then much is to move them to loosen everything up. You need to make sure you have good anti-freeze in there and your oil isn't too thick.

Natural gas is very popular in this area, but oil and propane are also big. Certain areas use steam and few use electricity only. Electricity is expensive to heat with in this area, natural gas is about the cheapest. A GF who lives up north heats with wood primarily. She's in *much* better shape than I am! LOL Many people supplement with wood. Some will run an electric heater in a room to supplement a little. I used to but decided it was cheaper to just run the gas furnace and not mess with supplemental heating.

I keep a blanket nearby when I nap to keep me warmer. These days I just keep the temperature up higher rather than worrying about being too-frugal. I still deserve to be comfortable.

Yes it's cold outside but it's warm inside. Probably as warm as in your house. Probably one of the worst things about the cold climate is the heat will dry out the air. I haven't gotten around to adding humidity yet and the air is very dry. Having a bit more humidity would make things more comfortable and cut some need for heat too but, like I said, haven't done it yet.

The other thing is appliances give off heat too. Lights, TVs, computers, and of course stoves and ovens give off heat that adds to the heat in a house.

I hate to burst the bubble of those who think people in the northland live in igloos but it's very comfortable. BTW the furnace just shut off, and will likely be off for a while! :) The good thing about the cold weather? Helps keep some of the riff-raff out! :D

I had to chuckle, I got an email from my cousin in Texas and she said the newscasters there have been going nuts warning people about the "cold" weather there and to be so careful with their vehicles... Really humorous!

Who wants to come build a snowman???

SE Wisconsin:

Snow cover of 5 to 6 inches.
Was cold last night, but will get colder tonight. Going oown to -5 F, Some of the ND air is a ariving. Had sunshine thia afternoon through thin high altitude clouds. Tomorrow, wind chill is expected to be fearice. Will moderate some for the Bears-Packers game this weekend at Chicago, but you are not going to catch me sitting out there in an open air stadium.

We've gotten spoiled. The last time it got below zero was in 2009.

Someone asked about heating houses. Most of the houses here have forced air heating sytems and fired with natural gas. Down to 5 F, homes well insulated and with proper sized furnaces, the furnace will run about 50% of the time or less. In my house, wind is a big factor. If it calm, my furnace will run only 20% of the time at zero F. The worst I've experienced in my house is the time it was 26 below with the wind howling. The furnace ran 90% to 95% of the time.

A very few homes are electricaly heated due to cost. A few medallion rated homes were built in the 1970s that were lelectrically heated. These were doubly insulated. The studs in the walls were staggered to form a wall 6 to 8 inches thick to gain more insulation.

Our lowest cost fuel is gas, followed by oil, with electic the most expensive. Heat pumps are not used becasue the soil freezes too deeply and one has to go too ddep to find 60 F soil. A few experimental installations do exist. These use extra wells for a heat source. Each well adds $10,000 to $20,000 cost. I know of 2 in-ground homes that reqires very little heat.

4:45 am and it's a balmy -2 here on the Keweenaw peninsula in Michigan's UP. Living on the edge of the big lake (Lake Superior) gives us lake effect snow (lots of it) and lake effect temperatures (which are easier to take). In other words, the big body of water helps keep us a little warmer.

My son lives in Rochester, MN, which is maybe a hundred or hundred and 25 miles more to the south, and it's -18 there this morning.

-27 air temp. Headed off to school/work!!

The mountains of western PA. Air temps 12, -8 windchill.

Gusting winds and in the midst of a snow storm. We have about 5 or 6 inches of the white stuff down and more on the way. I just fought my way to the feeders to give the birds some seed, the deer some corn and replenish the woodpecker block. Thought my ears were going to fall off!

Brrrr I heard on the tv as I was walking by just a bit ago International Falls,Mn -40 AIR TEMP!?
I was glad to wake up to a balmy -11! I hear Carol's area was -27. I bet Harry and Sam are even cold over there!

Here in central Indiana right now it is 3 above, with some wind outside, I don't know the wind chill. We have about 3 1/2 inches of snow on the ground I think maybe four.
