I've been checking our weather almost hourly to see if they're revising the forecasts up at all, so far: 32 for Saturday night, 34 for Sunday night. Most of my roses are just starting to leaf out...the gallica and alba are the slowest (and probably the smartest).

I'm hoping for no damage. What's forecasted for you?

I know this is not relative to the weather in your part of the country but here in CA last night we had a balmy nighttime temp of 27 degrees! Right after I transplanted several daylilies and echinacea also. Hope they fared all right. Mean ole Mother Nature.

32 would not be too bad. Anything under 28 I think is damaging.

I'm just starting to see now, the affects of the 26 degree night we had a few weeks ago. I thought everything had survived, but now I have dead growth on some of my roses that needs to be cut off. Luckily I didn't have many buds at that time.

Ann, I haven't seen past next Tues. but it should be around 31 or 30. I also don't know how many nights it will hang at that temp. Will that damage buds?

Calling for 33 here Saturday nite in Peoria, IL. Should I throw some protection over the newly-hardened roses I transplated?

Well I guess I won't be taking my mulch off. Maybe if I worry a lot I will lose that last 4 pounds.

Drat- I was so hoping this would just forget about us. We look to be in the low 30's for Sunday and Monday night. I am tired of winter. Enough already!

Buford I was wondering about a few of my plants that had new growth dead on them. I couldn't remember how cold it got a couple of weeks ago but apparently it got several of mine too. Boo Hoo. I hate late cold snaps. Lets all pray for nothing below 40. Good luck everyone, Judy

I guess being in zone 5 I shouldn't be surprised that we are getting another mini spring freeze, but here it comes. This weekend, we are supposed to be getting rain/snow mix both days, with lows around 28F (keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't go lower than that!). Naturally I just took all my pots (roses and perennials and some clematis) out of the shed because it was so nice and warm this week. Guess I'll have to watch carefully and drag them all back in if need be. But there are just so many of them, so it really is a big pain. Good luck to everyone. Hopefully we will all come out relatively unscathed.

Low 30s won't damage the roses. I don't get concerned unless the temp gets mid 20s or below.

prettypetals, where are you again? I see temps of mid 30s for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday night for Roswell (which is as close to Buford as I can get on Weather Bug).

Roses should be ok, but now I'm concerned about my hydrangeas which are very leafed out at this point.

Hi Buford, I'm in Calhoun. NW corner of Ga. I too am worried about my hydrangeas, peonies, clematis and hosta. All my clematis, peonies and azaleas are covered in buds. Will it hurt my clematis? I think my hosta and roses will be fine for a day or two of frost but don't know about the others. What do you think? I don't remember having so many clematis buds this early. Thanks, Judy

It looks like we will be in mid-low 30s for Sun, Mon and Tuesday night. My one remaining azalea is already in bloom, it will probably get fried. Ironically I just clipped off some of the top branches because their blooms must have been fried in the last freeze and they were blocking the rest of the blooms.

My hostas just started peaking out, so I hope they will be ok. I think the roses and clematis will be fine. The hydrandeas, who knows.

I'll be watching the weather reports as it gets closer.

Today has been beautiful. 72 degrees and sunny. It actually hurt to have to work inside.

Some decent weather on the weekend. Its rained 3 weekends in a row.....I am SOOOOO ready to be in the garden.

Have buds on some things....glad there is no freeze in the forecast.

We had high 20s last week and yes, Frank's buds look like little dried pods.

I check the weather on weather bug every few hours hoping it will raise the temps for night time but so far no luck. Buford does anything you use work better to protect plants from the freeze or frost than others? I am definitely gonna cover some things because I have so much stuff leafed out and tons of buds. Makes me so SAD!!! And MAD!!!! Judy

I can tell you that just black plastic bags doesn't work. I think it depends on how low to the ground the plant is.

Last year I was able to protect my 2 hydrangeas on one side of the house, but not the other. And my 2 Japanese Maples took the worst damage, as did my roses.

This isn't going to be as bad, and I don't expect the roses to be affected.

I have been checking up on the weather, and so far, so good. I am located in south central KY, and the lowest it is supposed to get here is 33. I noticed my first buds today!! So I am just holding my breath and hoping that the weather is forecast right!

Looks like 36 here. Wonder what the dew point will be. I think you have to know that to determine if you will have a frost.

Ronda...you are right about the dewpoint thing...if dewpoints are really low and the temp is forecast to be in the 30's then it will most likely frost. When the dewpoint temperature falls below freezing it is called the frostpoint. Knowing how weather works is kinda fascinating to me...anyway....let's pray for those higher dewpoints and NO FROST!!! In Middle TN, the weatherman just said a "mix" of precipitation for this Sunday and possible frost by Tuesday night. aaaackk!
I have already taken in my little baby potted roses but do you think I need to take in the big pots with big , big buds formed (not any fully opened yet)?? My hydrangeas that made it through the drought last year are just coming back slowly. I think they are fine (hoping).

They've changed the forecast. Now they are saying lows for Monday night in the upper 20s. That could be very bad.

Buford - oh, no; that's terrible! You're so waay south of Illinois and we're calling for 31 on Monday night and then 70 by Wednesday. I'm hoping it doesn't go that low; two years in a row is just way too cruel.

Buford, black plastic bags are the worst thing. They hold in cold air and then when the sun comes out they burn the roses. It is better to throw sheets over them but be sure they are cotton sheets and another thing, make sure you HAVE WATERED WELL before the freeze/frost, because the dry is more damaging than just cold.

I am so totally, unremittingly tired of our local weathermen flipping the snowflake chances on the Sunday and Monday night forecasts.
This, regardless, is NOT as bad as last year. Last year it was three to four days of 20 hours of temps below freezing; getting to 20s or lower. This time it's maybe four hours of temps within a few degrees of freezing. This (trying to convince mysunburnedself) is not as bad.
I watched temps several years ago and 28F at bud level didn't damage most of my HTs, it fried the plants that had bad RMV signs.
BUT, dang it, we in the southeast are nice people and we need our spring bloom.

I know it wont be as bad, but DARN, I was just outside and everything is just starting to look good. Ann, you know things have developed slowly this year, and that was good because we didn't need a repeat of last year. So to loose it now would be doubly bad.

It's not just the roses, although to lose the buds on my once blooming monster QE would be bad, but the hydrangeas and my poor Japanese maples that almost lost half their growth last year from frost damage. And my one crepe myrtle that got badly zapped last year and is now 3 feet shorter than the ones near it and is all budded out already.

I did read in Horticulture Mag that last year was a perfect storm. Warmer than normal Winter and March seduced everything to grow earlier than normal. Then ZAP 3-4 days and nights of freezing temps.

Good thing is it is going to be wet, so that should help. And I have bags of shredded leaves that I can put on somethings like my hydrangeas and at least protect the lower growth. And it's not going to be as cold during the day (supposedly) so maybe that will make a difference.

Worried about iris and clematis! Is this going to be an ongoing thing!

Well the twenties are gone for now so hopefully we won't get below freezing. Hopefully we will only get in the middle 30's or higher.

I saw that. I guess we'll have to watch day to day.....

I watched the late news from Tri-Cities (upper northeast TN) last night and their weather had estimated snowfall amounts. Forgive me, please, but I was envying them their snowfall that would keep basal breaks at 32F.
I admired the growth on Souv. de St Annes and Mystic Beauty yesterday because both (logically) make their basals within the somewhat protective framework of their pre-existing stems and I expect them to give themselves some protection.

North Georgia forecast is now updated as mid-30s for Monday and Tuesday night.

I think I can breath a sigh of relief.

OH MY GOSH THATS GREAT!!! I hope and pray it stays that way. This dang wind is so strong I hope it doesn't hurt anything.
