Introduce me to some new music ...

For Christmas I got a number of iTunes gift cards. I have nearly 5,000 songs on my iTunes folder right now. I've basically added every CD I own and have purchased several that I didn't already have. I have no idea where to start looking for new artists and songs so I thought I'd start here.

I like acoustic guitar, piano, country, epic orchestra works like soundtracks and backgrounds, new age and dance music. I prefer male singers over female but there are certainly exceptions like Eva Cassidy and kd Lang.

Suggestions anyone?

Thanks again all. I think she may associate hands with the gloves they used to pick her up with. They showed them to me and they were pretty scary looking to me let alone poor Sasha. C3D: I stopped at Petco after I got off work last night and bought a spray bottle of Comfort Zone. OMG. It works too good!!! I only used two sprays and sprayed my hands hoping it would help. She was sniffing the air like a bunny rabbit. Then she started yawning, and yawning, and yawning........after about ten yawns she curled up and went to sleep. I couldn't get her to play after that. Maybe I should have only used one spray. I sat with her for 1/2 hour singing Jingle Bells while she slept. She seems to calm down when I sing to her. Then I saw something moving out of the corner of my eye. I jumped and she woke up. There was a spider crawling up the wall about a foot away from my head. I had the kitty toy laser pointer with me and pointed to the spider with it. Forget our lessons. She was climbing the wall trying to get the spider. She crawled across my lap, but as soon as I moved my hand slightly she ran behind the toilet again. I left her with the spider and told her it better be gone when I returned (I hate spiders). It was gone when I went back. That toy kitty glove is a great idea. I will pick one up when I go shopping this weekend. My original plan was to have her stay in my bedroom, but I thought we could be more up close and personal in a smaller area so I housed her in the bathroom. Since the bathroom is off my bedroom I had planned on giving her the bedroom and bathroom for a while. Then hopefully the rest of the house at a later date. I have a kitty condo in front of the window in my bedroom that will be a change of pace for her. Of course it will be off limits then to Willow, McLovin and Boa. But they can have the sunroom. I just don't want to make the mistake of giving her too much room too soon and undoing the progress we have made over the last two weeks. Jenny

This is a great thread. I'm a teacher (though I only do long-term sub jobs right now), and also GT certified and trained. I've also raised two children, one of whom passed all the GT tests as a kindergartner and is now in college. My other child passed a few of the GT tests as a third-grader, but honestly I don't see her as 'gifted.' Part of the problem is that this school district includes achievement tests in the battery of GT tests, which is completely inappropriate, but there it is. And she is an extremely hard-working kid. Anyway, I've always been hugely interested in GT education and absolutely LOVE working with these students. But I'd like to let you in on a couple of dirty little secrets.... The first secret is that there are many teachers, even GT-certified who don't LOVE teaching these kids. In fact, they often appear (to me) to be defensive and ready to shoot down these kids at every opportunity. I think it is difficult for a parent to truly realize this because they aren't in the classroom. But I have witnessed it over and over again.... It's heartbreaking, and I try to intercede when I can, but that isn't always possible. The second 'secret' is about teachers being expected to differentiate instruction for all the levels in the room. It's a joke. Not because the teacher doesn't try. It's just a ludicrous system. It is politically incorrect to group students by ability, and no longer allowed anywhere that I've found. So a typical classroom has students with IQs below 70 and students with IQs above 125, occasionally very far above. Imagine you are trying to teach 25 children something -let's say .... how to knit. Some of your students have been knitting for four years, and some could not tell you what a knitting needle looks like. While you are trying to figure out how to group them, four boys have grabbed needles and are trying to stab each other, two more have grabbed your balls of yarn and tossed them to each other, which has caused them to unravel of course. The girls are yelling at the boys to stop it. Some are crying because they really, really want to learn how to knit. So you finally bring order to the chaos, and figure you can divide them into three groups, which does not truly correlate to the levels in the room, but is the best you can do. You truly need the entire time with each one of the groups. But you only have 1/3 of the time with each of course. And what do you suppose the other two groups are doing while you are working with one? You have given them some books about knitting to keep them occupied, but they are old and have only black and white photos so that isn't terribly successful. So you start with the least experienced group because they need the most time. After you spend ten minutes with the first group, you will barely have begun your session with the second group before a few students from the first group come running over with problems. And then that happens again. So the second group's instruction takes twice as long as it should because of the interruptions. And since the third group's time was used for the second group, suddenly, there's the bell! Guess which group didn't get attended to AGAIN?!?!? You may remember that I was fairly strong-minded in the original post on this subject -and felt you needed to think about removing your daughter from a toxic environment. If she wants to be at this school and the good outweighs the bad, okay. But from the sounds of it, her educational needs are not being met. Which might be okay if you or she are supplementing them at home. The way I see it, there are two types of needs for these kids. The first set of needs is what she needs to get into a college where she will hopefully truly have her abilities matched to her environment. And the second set of needs is what she needs to feed her hungry brain. The first set of needs could be covered in one year rather than four for most of these kids. When the information is drawn out over four years, boredom and frustration set in, and many GT kids simply begin to tune out. Some lose all of their enthusiasm and interest in learning and begin to fail. And then they can't get into the colleges where they might truly flourish for the first time. As I used to tell my son, don't kid yourself -there are some extremely bright people who never made it to college. There is a whole group of gifted dropouts, mostly boys, who didn't get the first set of needs met. And Anele -it sounds to me as if your daughter IS gifted. The sheer fact that she is interested in reading what you describe is a give away. I hope I haven't offended any one here -I am passionate about the short shrift these very top students are getting in the K-12 system, all over the nation. It is a huge loss to them, and a huge loss to our country. It's mind-boggling to me that we put forth so much time, money and energy to the first-string on the football team, but not to the academic team. Okay, stepping down off the soapbox now....

It seems that you need a new receiver, although you may also need a new set of speakers for the new receiver. This in turn will blow the top of your $500.00 and bring you closer to $1,000. You can buy a decent receiver from $200.00 as high as you want to go (the sky is the limit). Some receivers under $500.00 I can think of: 1. Onkyo TX-SR505. This receiver costs under $300.00. It's a 75-Watt x 7 channel receiver that has a 1080p HDMI switching circuit. This feature allows you to connect two high definition DVD players, and switch between the two, sending the best digital signal (1080p) to your HD TV. 2. Onkyo TX-SR605 (the one I plan to buy in the near future) costs under $500.00. This one can switch an analog video signal and convert it before sending it out the HDMI cable. It can also switch between two high definition videos (like the first one), and it can provide two different sounds (music) to two locations in you home (example: someone can listen to Elvis in the basement, while you can listen to Pink Floyd in the living room). This is a 90-Watt x 7 channels receiver, comes XM and SIRIUS ready. There are several receivers that are similar to these two, some made by Sony, Yamaha, Denon, etc., but for any of these you will need a new set of speakers to take advantage of the sound features. A set of Mirage NANOSAT speakers (subwoofer plus 5 miniature speakers) will set you back at least $790.00. The mini speakers can handle up to 100 watts each, and the sub can handle 75 watts. If you can't afford any of these receivers/speakers, then you may have to settle down for a small theatre system. These come with the speakers, a dvd player, etc., but some do not come with a receiver. Sony, and Panasonic offer great little packages that put out around 60 watts to the 2 front speakers, around 100 watts to the center speaker, around 33 watts to the 2 surround speakers (back speakers), and over 100 watts to the included subwoofer. Don't expect the best quality music and video out of these units, but they do a fine job if you are not too picky.

Thanks all to the warm welcome. I was the manager of a huge fabric store - for alot of years - in the 70's (polyester double knit days if anyone dates back that far). I had started a quilt with bicentennial (1976) fabrics and Holly Hobby prints. I have saved it all these years, and no it will never be finished! Methods, and supplies and technology and the wealth of information and help available to us thru the internet has made me decide to start quilting now; I always said that was my goal when I retired. And of course, I have to jusify my new sewing machine. Annie - I forgot the Sailrite machine for heavy canvas & the serger in my machine count. I've seen pictures of your machines and sewing room - the envy of all who sew! It made me clear space in my office for my sewing machine cabinet yesterday. Teresa- yes a familiar, nice person is always great. *waving back atcha* Thanks everyone again - I have paid attention to your suggestions and hints in other posts - some very old, and you all would be pleased at what a good student I've been.

Oooo, if you like guitar, do you know John Pizzarelli? You didn't mention jazz, but he is an absolutely incredible guitarist (I love his singing too)! Here he is with his father, Bucky....

I am not a music buff at all~~~I just got a SugarLand CD for Christmas and love them esp 'Stand Up' which they played on the CNN Heros Award show~~I loved it and I want that gals hair cut!!!

I don't know if you know or like Garou but I think he is fabulous here is one of my fave videos of him you can see more of him there, fantastic voice. Any time I am in a bad mood I go watch and listen to this video and I end up dancing in my chair and smiling LOL

*Jolie Holland (female, accoustic, very unique voice)
*Justin Townes Earle (Country/Bluegrassy)
*DeVotchka (sort of epic orchestra, did the soundtrack for Little Miss Sunshine)
*Cat Power (female, a lot of piano and guitar)
*Ani Difranco (female, accoustic guitar)
*Old Crow Medicine Show (rock/bluegrass/country-ish)
*Portishead (sort of new agey-orchestral, interesting female vocals)
*Bright Eyes (male singer, indie rock)
*The Felice Brothers (indie rock, my latest favorite...they play lots of interesting instruments and the lead singer sounds a lot like Bob Dylan, so that might either make it or break it for ya.)
*Pete Molanari (a guy I just discovered from the UK, very interesting mix of songs)
*Sigur Ros (epic orchestral type music, they are from Iceland, none of their lyrics are in English, but they are pretty amazing).

David Gray (or is it Grey). Someone introduced me to his music recently and I was pleasantly surprised. I've found Shazam on the iphone and a good local radio station have introduced me to some other new to me artists that I like but haven't gotten around to downloading any of these new tunes yet.

For your piano side, here's my favorite Keith Jarrett CD. Very soft and romantic. (He made this album for his wife.)

I also like Liz Story.

I tend to like female singers more than male, so I'm not much help there. But you might like Lizz Wright.

As for soundtracks, do you have The Road to Perdition? It's a great one.

Oh, and Kala Rupa: Explorations in Rhythm might be something you'd like.

Great thread-I need these ideas. Some names I haven't seen here: Danny Wright-wonderful soft piano music; Nanci Griffith-folk rock?; Alison Kraus, Nora Jones. Would you have loved to see James Taylor and Carly Simon? I think they toured or did a show together last year.

try a piano/keyboard player named sam struyk. he was a good friend of my son in high school and is very talented. he has done several commercials and was even on the playlist of a major airline several years ago, maybe still. all original and pleasant to listen to.

Ravencajun, If you like Lie to Me you should listen to Wander this world. That is truly a classic. I remember when Johny Lang was singing in bars when I was in grad school in Minneapolis. He turns 30 this month. I think he was 15 when he released his first album. Thanks for the reminder, I love him.

I was just thinking about Johnny Lang the other day. We have a couple if his early CD's. I wonder if he still plays barefoot. He's so talented.

Jonny Lang is utterly fantastic!
He was from Fargo,ND and that is where he started his music at. Everyone was astounded by him! He was sensational at 15.
Lie to Me is a favorite of mine too and Hit The Ground Runnin'
If you enjoy Stevie Ray Vaughan (I love Pride & Joy by Stevie) you will like Jonny Lang.

KidRock Born Free, is great! I adore All Summer Long!

Lots of my favorites aren't always new releases.
AC/DC Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, Jail Break, T.N.T., Stiff Upper Lip.

Eric Clapton's Layla and Cocaine are two good ones.

oh I have several of Jonny Lang's cd's absolutely love him have been listening to him since he started and watched a tv concert by him just last week on direct tv, he has grown up a lot.

Jasdip, I used to live in Norman, OK, Toby and his family were good close friends of ours, lived not far from us. Several members of the band actually lived at our house because they were on the road so much when they first started out they could not afford a place, we had plenty of room. They would set up the entire band in my living room and practice most nights they were not playing. I traveled on the road with them a LOT back in the day because they had to use my Van and trailer LOL. It is so awesome to see him up on the big stage today and remember back to him playing and singing those songs in my living room. He is a great guy and has a heart as big as he is.

Jack Johnson is a male singer I just discovered. You can hear short clips of this music linked below. His music is classified as American Folk, and his sound is unique. Very catchy and gets you grooving.

They sing in all their languages, English, Italian, French and Swiss. Just wonderful.

Raven....that is so wonderful that you "knew him when" and that he never forgot you and your family for it.

I agree with Casey about James Blunt, he's got some excellent songs out. He's one of my favorites!

Jack Johnson has a unique sound.. worth checking out if you think you might like soft rock with an 'island' flair.

Are you a American Idol watcher? Lee DeWyze's new cd (Live It Up) looks good.

One of my favorites is a jazzy blues singer from TN named Stacey Mitchhart. He's EXTREMELY under-rated. Everyone we introduce to his music wants us to burn a CD; they immediately take a liking to his sound. We've given out (free) more of his CDs than we can count, and his live DVD is even better. He's fantastic.

debi - I gotta say, if you are giving out copies of his cds for "free" you are actually taking money out of the artist's pocket and breaking the law. You might want to reconsider.

Yikes! I didn't have a chance to log in last night. Had no idea there were so many responses.

I know most of the big name country stars (Trace and Toby to name two) but have never heard of Jonny Lang. I checked him out and agree he is great. Will be buying some of his songs.

Also checked out Rodrigo & Gabriela and loved them too. I bought their song Diablo Rojo and will most likely buy others today. I am very partial to acoustic Flamenco music.

And Sam Stryke, wow! Will be downloading some of his piano works.

I have two Il Divo CDs and am well aware of those awesome and handsome guys. Swoon.

There are so many others to explore today. THANKS!

Pam, I had the opportunity to see James Taylor and Carly Simon last year when they were touring together. I had won a night out on the town through an ad agency I work with. I could select any stage venue in Orange County (where I live) or Los Angeles. I believe James and Carly were in LA at the time and we would have to leave work early fight traffic for an hour or more to get to where they were playing so we chose Dreamgirls in OC.

Busy day for me so I may not check in as often as I'd like but keep those suggestions coming. I'm taking notes!

Pandora.com is a good site to check out new music. For instance, you could go there, type in "Johnny Lang" and it would first play you a song by Johnny Lang, then would branch off into songs that are somewhat similar, so you might like them too. It's really well done.

My own recent musical discovery is Eilen Jewell. (Her first name rhymes with "feelin'. ") She does sort of roots/county/blues, and her vocals have a distinct Billie Holliday rhythm. "Rain Roll In" is one of my favorites of hers, but all her songs are good.

Be careful if you decide to download any Kid Rock songs. I have heard he doesn't allow his songs to be downloaded from Itunes. If you find a Kid Rock song, be sure to give it a sample listen first.
