I cannot recall who recommended the McCall Smith (Smith McCall?) books on the #1 Ladies Detective Agency, but I have enjoyed them. I saw on TV that they have developed an HBO tv series based on it, but I did not hear when it will start. Should be great.

I like them as they are light-hearted mysteries, not full of blood and gore (although I read a number of the latter, too!) I bought one from garage sale once, and the seller said she enjoyed them much more after she had borrowed the audio from the library, and learned how to pronounce some of the words more easily.

Oh, thanks for reminding me of that book. I read the first book and meant to track down more. Our small library branch is terrible when it comes to books series. They rarely have a full book series, just bits and pieces.

I have read all of them -- in order (I'm strange like that). I love them, and am anxiously awaiting the new book. I'll probably get it for Mother's Day or my birthday from DD#1, as she started me on the series. I love reading them. I wish I subscribed to HBO so I could watch it, but I'll get them from Netflix when they come out on DVD. Such enjoyable reading. You could probably finish them in 2 or 3 days or less. However, my husband always wants to eat dinner every night and have clean clothes, so I can't just sit and finish one of the books in one sitting.

I second Christie (all of them, every character) and Penny. Also, two contemporaries of Christie are Ngaio Marsh and Dorothy Sayers. Heyer was also a contemporary-her mysteries are not Victorian, they are of the time she wrote them. Her romances are Victorian. The two are very different. Other authors I would recommend with your friend's caveats in mind: Elizabeth Peters-the Amelia Peabody series-Edwardian archeologists P.D. James-contemporary, sometimes gritty but not raunchy Catherine Aird-Scotland Yard detecive who grows roses as a hobby Anne Perry-she writes two-I like the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series best, but her William Monk series is very popular too. You can find series lists in order, read-alikes, recommendations, publication information....I use it all the time to hlep patrons at the library, and for myself because I like to read series in order. Thanks, Vee and everyone. It does seem as if te US is getting what was shown in the UK last year--logical, as it is based on the first book in the series. I'm not sure if HBO will immediately follow with the second set of episodes. The first book, as shown last year in the UK, is out on DVD, but only in the UK DVD format. I'll just have to wait. A further point. It sounds as if the TV version has added plot lines and characters not in the books. Not sure how that will work.

I love this series. I listened to a couple of them recorded by Lecat. I highly recommend this as it helps with pronunciation.

The pilot program is shot in Botswana? That should be wonderful!

If you have Netflix, you can Save it to your queue and when it becomes available you will know.
