I cannot recall who recommended the McCall Smith (Smith McCall?) books on the #1 Ladies Detective Agency, but I have enjoyed them. I saw on TV that they have developed an HBO tv series based on it, but I did not hear when it will start. Should be great.

I like them as they are light-hearted mysteries, not full of blood and gore (although I read a number of the latter, too!) I bought one from garage sale once, and the seller said she enjoyed them much more after she had borrowed the audio from the library, and learned how to pronounce some of the words more easily.

Oh, thanks for reminding me of that book. I read the first book and meant to track down more. Our small library branch is terrible when it comes to books series. They rarely have a full book series, just bits and pieces.

Lilo, memories may get scrambled, but knowing what "defrag" and "RAM" mean suggests you're still a "happenin' kind of lady! :>) I'm always amazed at what sometimes pops into or out of my mind at any given time. Thanks, Vee and everyone. It does seem as if te US is getting what was shown in the UK last year--logical, as it is based on the first book in the series. I'm not sure if HBO will immediately follow with the second set of episodes. The first book, as shown last year in the UK, is out on DVD, but only in the UK DVD format. I'll just have to wait. A further point. It sounds as if the TV version has added plot lines and characters not in the books. Not sure how that will work.

Just finished Blue Shoes and Happiness and enjoyed it very much. These books are way too short for me and go by too fast. This one is a series of smaller episodes and all of the major characters, whose number seems to increase with each book, appear. Some get a lot of attention; others have cameo roles. I think Alexander McCall Smith should give up his other books, at least for the time being, and concentrate on Mma Ramotswe, her friends and family, and Botswana. He has created a character and a world with universal truths and gentle humor. Don't want to give any spoilers but will be glad to discuss this when enough people have read it.

I love this series. I listened to a couple of them recorded by Lecat. I highly recommend this as it helps with pronunciation.

The pilot program is shot in Botswana? That should be wonderful!
