Rheem oil furnace won't shut off

Our furnace is approx. 18 yrs. old. It starts up and runs fine but won't shut off automatically (fan + heat). We had the transformer replaced 2 years ago and the tech. felt then that the furnace would probably need to be replaced "before too long". So now we have this new problem. Should we just give up and buy a new furnace? The dealer offers a $600. "clunker" credit thru 10/31, plus the gov't. tax credit. What should a new oil furnace cost?

A few things could cause the furnace to not shut off, thermostat, short in t-stat wire, or primary control, you wont get a tax credit on an oil fired furnace and cost depends on a lot of things

jimcolonial is correct. the furnace not shutting off doesn't usually require a new furnace. If the tech is any good he should be able to narrow it down fairly quickly. There are a coulpe of things that control your furnace. One is your t-stat. It is just a switch. If you diconnect a wire from the t-stat and the furnace still runs that eliminates that part. Go to the control at the boiler that it's hooked up to and take the t-stat wire off and if the boiler shuts down you could possibly have a short in you t-stat wire. If it still doesn't shut down chances are it's in your primary control. It sounds like a lot but it is pretty simple and doesn't take very long.

Your system might be locking out and shutting off the breaker resets it. Take a look at the unit and look for a small window somewhere on the cabinet. This is usually where you can look in and see the LEDs which are part of the diagnostic function.(Sometimes they are difficult to see inside) When the system locks out counting the number of flashes before you reset the breaker will correspond to an unfavorable condition within the system and a label inside of the cabinet will tell you what those flashes mean. Most newer systems have this feature.

what size home? your location? size of furnace? input/output I would want to eliminate a faulty thermostat as the problem...what type of stat do you have? has furnace always performed in this manner? how long does furnace run when outside temp is below 60 degrees? IMO

Yeah gas is flowing to other appliances just fine, I suspect that it's internal the gas valve control that's the issue. When I completed the ignition sequence, and turned off the gas valve and then turned off the internal valve, I could smell some gas as it cleared out of the appliance (which is supposed to happen). I made sure there was no gas smell before turning it back on, but it seems to me like that means it's most likely the terminal malfunctioning. I don't have a voltage reader or I would check what the voltage is. As far as gas goes though, I'm not too experienced and I'd prefer not to blow myself up. I think I will have our HVAC service guy take it from here.

I think it's a relay. Your unit has a transformer, therefore it has an isolation relay. It's an odd ball system, in use for only a couple of years but it(the relay) was used on both gas and oil by Rheem. It should still be available.It was supplied by Honeywell.
