Where to go in MD/DC/VA for the TKO?

DH's company is having their annual Holiday party this weekend in Bethesda, MD. I'll be tagging along and am staying through Wednesday. DH will be working at his home office (usually he works from home). I'll probably have the car and/or Metro access (i.e. park & ride). So, I was hoping you have some suggestions for kitchen eye candy.

This is my 5th trip to the area, so I've done nearly all the museums at least once. I'm planning to drop by Julia Child's kitchen, which I missed last year for some reason. I'll probably do that on Sunday with DH. What else?

pea flowers start at the top and work their way down, so check if you have flowers coming soon from the section between the vine and where the leaves come out. If you do, more peas are on the way. If you don't, there might be too much nitrogen in your soil. Veggie plants like nitrogen but too much makes more plant than veggie.

Where to buy Orchids in the MD/VA/DC area?

Be careful. Orchids are cheap for a reason. Lots of times growers will stress them severely to force them into bloom, and once you get them home they never recover. Always lift the orchid out of its pot to check the roots before you buy it. If most of the roots aren't fat and healthy looking, forget it. There's a place near us that seems reputable, but I don't recall the name. It's right at the corner of Route 123 and Beulah Rd. in Vienna. Larry

The Invisible One is finally reporting in. After last SundayÂs gathering, The Bug got me down, eliminating my ability to say anything the least bit witty, not that I could have matched the others at that, anyway. DH and I enjoyed everyoneÂs company immensely. It was wonderful to dine among GW celebrities Igloochic (the delightful, devoted mother of adorable Jesse -- I hope he is doing much better), Buehl (who I later realized is the Kitchen Forum FAQ compiler/poster), and cooperbailey (with whom I had several things in common). It would be fun to meet more GW folks, whenever and wherever. We are in Towson, MD, so I expect weÂll be headed south when it happens. Some have pronounced our kitchen "finished." Now, we all know that "done" is a relative term. I hastily took some pictures of our kitchen before last weekÂs dinner meeting, and the only thing really missing is a window treatment. However, I need to straighten up the counters, find the best angles, and gather all the spec details before preserving our kitchen for posterity in the Finished Kitchens Blog. That new project is definitely on my Someday List Â another relative term. :-) Alice

The Washington Design Center is on metro at 300 D st. SW. It's to the trade except the Kitchen Products Center is public Saturdays 9 to 3 PM. You will drool! The upscale appliance store is great.

In Bethesda there are a lot of home design stores within walking distance of each other for rugs, furniture, fabric and accessories. Poke around on Internet for designer district Betesda and you should find it. They'll be open Sunday and Design Center is Saturday only. Have fun!

Have you been to Baltimore's Inner Harbor? If you have a car it might be nice to see...but it is going to be cold this weekend.

It's probably too short-notice, but maybe try to get together with some of the MD/DC/VA folks?

Thanks to all. I've got my iphone and DH's laptop and will do some checking for these spots. In the last few years I've been to Bethesda, I didn't know there was a design district.

I'll be flying in Sat afternoon and the party is Saturday night. DH and I will probably bounce around DC on Sunday, ducking into museums to keep warm. It'll be his only free day. My kitchen days will be while he's at work. His eyes glaze over every time I mention the word kitchen, so it's best I go it alone.

I couldn't search last night when recommending that Bethesda had a neighborhood of design stores. Now that I search I see I was kind of exaggerating. This article is good about some design store and gallery options within a 10 block radius in Bethesda. Happy hunting!

One part of Georgetown in DC, Cady's Alley, has a lot of upscale sources including Ann Sacks for tile and Waterworks for over-the-top luxury bath fixtures
