Electric baseboard heat won't shut off

My apartment was added on 14yrs ago. It has electric baseboard heat with its own knob on each unit. Well the one in my living room turned on all by itself with the knob in the off position. And won't shut off.

Often the thermostat is single pole. If the end of the heater element electrically nearer the thermostat should become ground-faulted, the power from the non-switched pole can supply 120 volts continuously to the heater element. That would be the first thing I would test.

Bus driver is correct.

It's that or evil demons... but I'd go with the ground fault first.

We have tried cleaning, replacing valves three times, and nothing has worked. We have 7stations. Number one stays on unless we shut off the main water line. We finally canceled it and hooked up an irrigation timer (that usually connects to a faucet.) We turn it on manually and the pipe jerks so we know it is working properly. When we turn it off, the pipe jerks so we know water is on and off but Number one is still running. We are at our wits end. Anyone out there who can give us an answer?????

Find the "House circuit breaker" for that oven and keep it turned off unless you are using the microwave or the wall oven. One hopes that the warming drawer has its own electrical circuit---that would be the best, but if it doesn't, find out what else "Quits" when you flip off the circuit breaker and hopefully it won't be anything you can't live without. When you need whatever is on that same circuit breaker just flip it back on. Since The warming drawer has a knob "instead of touch controls" more than likely the knob is a simple on/off/temp comtrol so more than likely "resetting the circuit breaker" won't fix the on/off problem,(but try it anyway), more than likely unless you are very "handy" (electrically speaking), You will need a service call to fix it. A C short cycle yesterday and now won't shut off

Good morning. I have no experience with A/C so all help much appreciated. Last week we had a power cut in the middle of the night. Since then I noticed a few issues with the A/C. Firstly the upstairs unit wouldn't power on without me going in to the attic and turning the power switch up there, the thermostat wouldn't control it. Then it worked fine for a few days. Last night it started going through short cycles, coming on for twenty seconds and going off repeatedly. Tonight I came home from work and it's running, thermostat won't shut it off. It's blowing cold air constantly..... I've taken the thermostat off to change batteries and a/c kept running and I still can't control it with new batteries in the Tstat. I can hear thermostat turning on and Off but fan is constant. The downstairs unit is working no problem (knock on wood) and we didn't have any other electrical problems after power outage / surge.... Thanks a lot!

That Trane AHU has a fan relay inside the control box of the unit the relay is attached to a small PC board so you should have no trouble finding it, this is the likely source of your problem unless you have a couple of control wires getting together the relay is stuck in the closed position you can probably tap it and it will release but you will need to replace it Here is a link that might be useful: Air Conditioning Repair made Easy

What is the best way to fix it? Right now I have the breakers off to the heater.

Apartment? Who owns the property? Unless you both own and occupy the property, most laws prohibit you from doing electrical work.
Plus there is no indication in the posts that you have any previous experience nor any idea how to proceed. Providing that requires more time and effort than I have available to donate here.

Yes, Bus Driver is right, this is a landlord / electrician issue.

If you aren't saying "oh, of course, a ground fault... let me get out my meter..." then you need to hand this off.

I pretty much can do what I like with the apartment with some restrictions as my step-dad and mom own the house with an in-law apartment. I do know an electrician. I was hoping it was something like replacing the thermostat unit thinking something internal was wrong. As my boyfriend and step-dad can do small electrical work. Looks like I'll have to call my friend.
