Spacepak A/C - Need to Replace

Hello,

I live in Richmond, VA and have a 1500 square foot house built in 1942. About 14 years ago central air was installed via a Spacepak system (high-pressure, very narrow ducts). It has a 10 Seer Rheem (again, around 14 years old).

While the AC runs electric, I have a gas fired boiler for my heat (my preference would be to continue to keep these separate).

The ductwork has some leaks, which have been taped up. The air handler is in the attic, which is poorly insulated (i will look to tackle this later in the fall).

Am thinking about replacing the unit to take advantage of the tax credit. Any of you guys ever work on/have suggestions for a spacepak system? Would appreciate any advice you could offer. Off the top of your head, what would be the ball park price to test/repair the ducts, replace the a/c and air handler to a high efficiency unit?

Lastly, not sure if it would fit, but would it make sense to relocate the air handler out of the very hot attic and move it to the crawl space? perhaps this is a naive question, bit figured some experts out there could weigh in.

I do no thing Spacepak or Unico are in the 'high efficiency' game.

They are in the 'at least you can have AC game.'

Relocating the air handler would be about as much labor as it took to install the existing system.

You could make a rough room in the attic to contain the air handler with light construction and foam insulation panels.

If you then remove all the ceiling insulation inside the 'room' it becomes at least partly conditioned space.

Other than that or adding more insulation to the air handler and ducts (hopefully you do NOT metal ducts but ductboard) there is not much that can be done.

yea, high velocity and high efficiency seem to be mutually exclusive. So odds of finding a match with a Space Pak that get the tax credit are probably about nil.

While you don't specify mdl numbers for either quote, I see no reason to replace the upstairs system particularly since the upstairs is rarely used and system has been thoroughly checked, in good working order, and has a reasonable service history without any major issues. Yes, you should expect to get a better overall deal by purchasing two systems rather than one system. However, a significant difference-rarely. Make certain you compare warranty differences and dealer has a good reputation in your community. Just for info, I prefer Trane and sister company, Am Standard. IMO Good Luck!

I would tend to agree on the 13 SEER basic, saving some money. But here is the question: The XR15 has a warranty that is 10-Year Compressor, Coil, and functional parts. The 13 SEER Trane (XB13) has 10-Year Compressor, BUT only 5-Year Coil, 5-Year functional parts. So 13 Seer is cheaper upfront, but 5 years less on warranty. Is that worth it to save the cost now? Also, on 13 SEER, I understand that I would not qualify to get any tax credits ($500) or tax rebate (another $500). After all the credits, the XR15 would cost $6177.00. The XB13 would cost me $5737. For $440 difference, I get the XR15 and the longer warranty. Thoughts??

Hi, just had a complete system installed yesterday. I live in dallas where cooling means more than heating. cost 7k even for everything. here is a list of what was installed. Trane XR13 4 ton AC condenser. Trane XR80 5 ton 1 stage with 4 speed blower. New matching evaporator coil with the new R-410A refrigerant. New return and supply plenums, all sheet metal construction with exterior wrapped insulation. New manual air dampers at each supply duct. Added an extra return air duct, grill and filter in double existing volume of return. New drip pan with overflow float switch (cut off system if drainage get blocked - keeps ceiling from getting water damage). New electrical disconnect and wiring (located outside by the condenser). New concrete pad. New programmable thermostat. Did all the work required to rid and clean system of old coolant, hauled away old system and did a relatively good job cleaning up. This new system is so much cooler and better airflow than the old one and should be more efficient. I really wanted the sheet metal plenums with EXTERIOR insulation and the manual dampers. This should really pay off in the long run for comfort and health. Next time I should just have to replace the AC condenser. Furnace later. All in all I think I got a good deal and I'm pretty sure the work is A+. I paid a little extra for the plenums, dampers and for Trane products.

Space Pac has a new ducting system almost like PVC but made out of different material. Go with a high eff unit. They do have matching condensers to get better eff out of the unit. The machine is much better r now then it was 10 years ago......... I would call space Pac and get one of their local techs to do the job. Getting back to the duct work, with the duct work they actually drill a 2 inch whole into it, there are collars that fit into the duct work that fits nice and tight so there is "0" duct loss and all cooling goes into the room.

I have a more recent Space Pac heat pump and I love it. I do not have the new ductwork. Maybe in the near future. Chris Blontz was my installer and he is one of the few mechanics in the Richmond area who know this system well. Here is his number: 804-356-3477. My elec bills went down significantly when I installed this system!
