Supply Pipe Sizing Question

Hi,

I have a supply that I want to change out to a different size because it is protruding into the hall, blocking me from being able to properly seal the one side of our new door. It currently is a 6" line coming off the trunk in the basement, it then transitions into a huge old gravity furnace pipe. It is full of gaps and has rather poor air flow from the leaks as well as the size transition.

My question is, it is possible to continue the 6" line all the way through the basement ceiling then transition to a rectangular pipe that will fit within the wall? If so what size of rectangular pipe do I need to correspond with the 6" line. The room is about 120 square feet and the wall is not load bearing that I want to run the pipe through. Or would it be better to just run 6" round pipe from the trunk and up the wall creating a small box in?

Thanks,

Dan
