EXTREMELY White Christmas in Fargo...!

As on Oakleys thread, Fargo had its LOAD of the White-stuff!!

Nothin' for us to deal with though...

I THINK it's one of the rare times that BOTH I-29 AND I-94 were closed the ENTIRE length of ND...from Canada to SD, and from MN to Montana.

Grew up with severe weather and how I love these stories! Truckee, CA and Fargo, both makes news the news for extreme climates. I'm the Truckee gal.

My parents were professional drivers in these climates. And I'm not so bad myself. My DH has me drive in extreme weather. He was raised elsewhere. I pride myself in 'walking' around mass car pile ups. I know how to use gears and how to pick good tires.

Faron, I was thinking about you last night when I watched the news! Every single interstate and turnpikes here were closed down on Christmas. My son's in-laws still can't make it home!

We have another storm coming Tues and Wed, but they promised it won't be a big one. Yeah, right! Our neighbors went to Kansas City, KS over the holidays and I think they're stuck up there because they've been getting it too, and was still getting snow yesterday.

You know what I do like about these storms? People are NICE to each other. On the way to my son's house on Christmas we stopped and talked to several people on the way and everyone was so nice. We stopped to check in on people who had their cars in drifts, thankfull the road grader was on it's way. This is one of the rare times where we can trust ALL strangers.

Stay safe and warm! I'm heading out to the store to stock up again, going north, so I have no idea what the roads are like up there. lol I have my 4wd though. Can't live without it in the boonies. :)

Just perfect Melinda, that apron was meant for you! Couldn't believe I saw you post a pic on FB with that saying and here I had sent the package with that apron. Telepathy or something!!!! The jam I will send to you as an email once I jot it down. This was my first year making it, and it won't be my last. It's been a real winner. I have an insane collection of Santa's. He's the tallest one I have. My granddaughter sometimes calls him her pretend grandpop! I thought he was a beauty when I first laid eyes on him, and lo and behold, after Christmas one year, he was marked down by 50%, so I treated myself. Still more than I would have normally wanted to put out, but I think at that time, I had a bunch of money!!!!! He's a little over 5' tall. Shirley, why not take a different month? And I'll light a fire under Carol's butt....she's just coming back from her grandson's wedding, so it takes her a little time to get back in to the groove. I fell like I have been doing laundry all weekend...two loads to go for the wash and then i'm done for a few weeks or more. Got all the new Christmas clothes down for everyone, and everybody gets new sheets and stuff, aside from the regular dirty stuff, and i'm pooped. kitchen is clean, dog is bathed, i'm halfway there with my contribution for new years. this coming week i'll tackle my granddaughter's room...best to do that when she's at school. then it's time for the basement which I dread, but it needs to be organized, once again Well, hope everyone has a great New year celebration. We are heading up the mountains, probably the last time until the spring. Hi Faron, Today's story was on the front page of the paper as well as the front page of the sports section. All-American wide receiver Ryan Spadola has been suspended for forwarding a tweet from a high school friend that included a racial slur. Regarding the suspension for the tweet, Coach Andy Coen said in a statement: "When he re-used the words, he made them his." He was 98 yards away from setting the FCS single season record for receiving yards. He is thought to have the ability to make the NFL. He is also a regional academic honoree & a member of the Patriot League's All American team. The reporter writes that Spadola wouldn't survive on LU's racially-diverse squad if he was really a racist and that he got caught up in the pregame smack talk. Spadola's apology statement: "At the time I received and forwarded the tweet, I didn't stop to think about how this could be offensive." The articles point out it's a struggle to find the right balance between not restricting a player's freedom of speech while also enforcing a proper code of conduct. What a mess and what a painful learning experience for the whole team. He will not be flying out today with the rest of the team. Snow is on target beginning tonight in the Rockies. The last two years and now have been awful though. Enough snow to cover ground and trees, but ice underneath and makes travel serious. It melts by the heat of the sun, but the freezing temps makes for shear ice on the roads. My daughter and I were going to spend the day together toasting the rest of the family scattered in other states and youngest son who is a trucker. He will be going through your state tomorrow, or sitting somewhere in safety. Our day together won't happen, neither of us are brave enough to chance the ice and live on steep hills to get in and out. So...toast to us and have a warm holiday. This reminds me of the Christmas we had that brought drifts to the second floor. The airport closed for a week, no one could get in or out, whatever transportation they had. There were friends who had stashed their Santa gifts with others and couldn't get to them. And no forewarning of this amount of snow. Thankfully I had shopped the day before, enough for company. So we ate well. Most people spent the day digging others out. A gift no one expected to give.

Desdemona...gotta remember that one! Beautiful! In my limited experience, David Austin (or anyone else for that matter) has yet to put out a perfect white English-style rose, or even one to the level of Iceberg even though Iceberg has yellowish leaves in my area, it is vigorous, blooms well, and has a strong honeyed fragrance. I've been on a bit of a hunt for a white English-style rose. Glamis Castle: smells like mothballs. Wacked-out thorny. But vigorous, and blooms in the heat. Winchester Cathedral: Blooms have a nice form, floriferous and plant has nice form. But blooms open dingy white (see below), with a fragrance that has an undertone of latrine. Prone to mildew. Fair Bianca: Well formed very white blooms, with nice fragrance, on a spindly short bush that doesn't want to grow despite coddling. Faded flowers don't drop and need deadheading, although this is not often since there were few flowers. Bolero: nice short plant with glossy modern leaves. Blooms often and with a delicious fragrance. Too bad it is very rare for me to get a flower that is not disfigured and damaged by thrips. Marie Pavie: more pink than white, and gets chlorotic more than any other rose. Lichfield Angel: poor vigor in this climate, not many flowers and not much fragrance. Souvenir de la Malmaison: Few flowers (scented of beer/bread). I have not tried Claire Austin or Tranquillity, though if they are yellow, I'm not likely to. I still want to try Fabulous! even though it is unscented and not really in the English style. And Windermere, although not really white.

How much total did you get, Faron?

We have a winter weather advisory for today, another possible 4" with brisk winds, and there is probably 3" on the ground from yesterday.

Didn't have a white Christmas tho. :/
Snow on the ground before, but Christmas Eve sleet/rain melted it all. Now it's back again, tho. Don't like bitter cold or ice, but I do like the snow. Especially the big fat flakes that just flutter down slowly, and make the world so quiet and still.

Faron, I lived in Grand Forks for 2 winters and 1 summer in 1984-1986. Although I grew up in Colorado and was quite comfortable in snow, I was truly amazed at how cold it got, how the temps dropped below zero by 15 December and never rose above zero until March, about the continual presence of snow --- that then became dirty, black snow because of the rich top soil that would be blown around in blizzards settling on top of the snow, about the many blizzards that really stranded a person/car, so you really had to carry an emergency survival kit in the car, about the brutal wind-chill (one morning I left for work in -90 degree temps (relecting wind chill), the sound of the wind that would blow and blow....so many memories. I think the most amazing was that in the winter of 1984-85 (I can't remember which month), a couple driving in downtown Fargo were stranded in a blizzard that suddenly blew up, and froze to death in their car. They could not see where to go to find safety ...in downtown Fargo!! I'll never forget that.

After spending those 2 winters in North Dakota, I gained so much respect for the pioneers who settled in that area (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, etc.), the hardships they endured, the loneliness, and the sense of truly being at Nature's mercy.

I wouldn't trade my Grand Forks, ND experience for anything!

I just saw on the news that you guys are 30 below! I cannot imagine that. We are freaking out in Austin, Texas because it is going down to the teens here tomorrow!

Oooh, man, we have a triple whammy coming.
8-12" of snow.
Lake effect snow on top of that (amounts vary on that)
Wind chills -15 to -20

Knew I should have gone to the grocery store today!

Hey! I was winding-up my NDSU-time in '84-'86!

They were out near the airport on 19th Ave. N.
Its' an East-West road that fills-in FAST because of the 8' high fences that ring the airport.
(most of that fence is ~75' from the road...)
Therefore, snow starts building-up in a hurry across that road if winds are from the North!
They were driving thru drifts when they shouldn't have even been on that road.

* We DID set a record low for the date tho...MINUS 33 ACTUAL temp, not this Wind-Chill silliness...
* G. Forks had minus 36 I think.
* Thur. nite tho, we'll get back down to minus 25 they say!!
* Breathing air THAT cold almost "hurts" in a way! But still...people here go shoppin'....snow "creaks" when you walk on it...
* We've been "kinda" laughing at all the Today Show "drama" about the cold places! Reporters commenting on "special alerts" about temps in the "teens"...wow....
* I DON'T laugh at the ag-growers though, that's serious business. I'm just talkin' about the "crisis-mode" mentality weather news. We just roll our eyes and head out the door...20 degrees colder than everyone else...
* Jeeezzzz...I've worn SHORTS when it's plus 20 out!!!!
