Wooo-hoo! Now Lehigh Univ. comes to Fargo!!

The NDSU Bison led the whole game against James-Madison Univ.,...a fairly convincing victory @ 26-14!!!

Felt kinda bad for them...their traveling crowd was only a little section of ~ 30 people, surrounded by 18,000 Bison!!

I DO realize that it's a loooonng, somewhat expensive trip for their fans...Uffda!

I know in previous Bison playoff years, a $500-a-pop charter-plane was FULL of Bison fans heading to the games....just sayin'....

I'm somewhat surprised that our student-body is SO much bigger than Lehigh's!

(I realize this makes NO difference however!!)

Total Fall 2011 'SU students = 14,400, of all grad-levels.

Lehigh sits @ ~ 7,000 students.

I've never been to the Bethlehem, PA area, where Lehigh is. Sounds like a pretty area though!

Was this area hard-hit by the floods this summer?!?!?

Any Lehigh alums on these forums??

Hey Faron,
I live in Bethlehem. My DH, BIL, an ex-BIL, and 2 sisters are all LU graduates. It's a pretty campus on the hills of the southside of town.

Bethlehem is a charming city. We bill ourselves as The Christmas City and make a big fuss about xmas. White candles in all the windows, 2 different German style outdoor Xmas markets, night light bus tours.

don't know if you'll check back to this thread but in case you do...; i go up to lehigh several times every year for cross country and winter track meets... have never driven around bethlehem too much. there are some dec meets that are coming up- where would you rcommend eating dinner in bethlehem and which shops are worth visiting?? thanks!

Good morning everyone! Thank you for the happy comments on DH's condition and the sympathetic ones for TCS. DH did manage to play his nine last night, did have green tea on the nineteenth, and got home none the worse for wear. Although he is not really well, he is certainly better today than we expected. We firmly believe that TCS suffers from ADD, and are looking for a professional diagnosis, but are doing things together to help him out. There are a lot of things that, taken together, make a difference. We just keep slogging along! I just browsed through all 800+ of my photos - none of the rockery! Guess why...it is just plain ugly. I used flat field stone to cover up a small slope at the very back of the lot, and planted all kinds of little stuff inbetween the rocks. The little stuff hasn't done well and the grass and weeds from the orchard have crept in. Last summer I lifted every rock, weeded, replanted...it looks just as bad as ever this spring. Maybe I'll clean it up again, and take a photo or two while it is in good shape...don't hold your breath! We are having the rain today too, and it is forecast for the next four days. I am glad of the respite from so many outdoor chores; also the inside is looking pretty dreary and can use a clean-up. I am exhausted. I have done so much running around the last three weeks; even yesterday I spent four hours doing community planting to get it done before the rain, planted my lwn hanging baskets, and biked to soccer and back with TCS in the evening. I used to have sleep issues, insomnia; guess what kind of sleep issues I have now? I could sleep forever! I love all the talk about chickens and quail and the like. I would love the fresh eggs, but I don't think I could eat a chicken that I knew. I am such a squeam! Dogs are showing the effects of benign neglected over the last few weeks. They are not getting enough exercise or training. That takes care of two out of Chelone's three dog requirements. They are getting the love stuff. Last week they gave the most appalling display of bad-dog-manners that I have ever seen: walking nicely with the two of them, a couple walked by with a very large white german-shepherd typ dog, and my two little twenty-pounders went absolutely nuts. Yelping, whing, jumping; Tucker even broke his collar and leash trying to get closer to this other dog, which, incidentally, behaved itself wonderfully. Finally Tucker got away and jumped joyously all over this poor dog. There I was with a crazed Ajax all over the place, Tucker leaping all over the road and the other dog, and of course I also had the requesit little bags of poop to hold on to as well. I finally got the man to stand on Ajax's leash while I gathered up Tucker, his collar, his leash, the baggies...and then I also picked up Ajax and carried everything home - I was absolutely furious with them both. The people asked me if I knew that it is illegal in Ontario to own Pit-Bulls. Pit-bulls indeed. They haven't walked on this street since. I am furious just thinking about it, but I feel quite guilty too, as they haven't had the much-needed attention. Oh well, all things in good time. All the gardens and plantings look amazing. I am so envious of the gorgeous wisteria. For the most part it doesn't survive here, but there is a little house here in town that is covered with it, and I don't know how they manage it. And of course the Laurie and Randy Garden Decorations would be most welcome in any garden, I'm sure *LOL* Most of my things survived the winter. I lost two clems; one was a Florida Seiboldi that I didn't think would make it anyway; the other was a large flowered blue thing that I forget the name of. The ones I hoped for the most are great: Josephine, and a Durandii. I am really pleased about them. My Boston Ivy on the wall is much better already than it was last year too. Well, enough rambling...I think I'll try to clean up my filthy indoor garden area today and also psyche out what I need to do to get the guest room pained and back to "normal" - although disrupted and unkempt seems to be the normal for that room! I was born in '44, and I never had "fast food" until I dated my husband in the late 60's. My family considered McDonald's food to be trash, though none of us had ever tasted it. While in my late teens I drove to Hartford, CT for my bassoon lesson, and I used to pass a Friendly's and read the sign that said Ice Cream on one line and Sandwiches on the line below. I wondered if they were a sandwich shop or if they sold only ice cream sandwiches. I didn't find out until one was built in Stratford and I finally decided to eat there. Awful Awfuls were incredibly large and think milkshakes at Friendly's. They were awful good and awful big. Eventually, they had to change the name to the Fribble. I think it was due to a another store using the name first. Somehow, when the name changed, Fribbles just weren't as good as Awful Awfuls. Friendly's made the best cheesburgers in the world back then. They were made as a square burger added to a grilled cheese sandwich and were always cut into three pieces. Does anyone recall a canned meat called Veal Loaf? The can was ths same as a Spam (UGH, no matter how poor I may ever be, I will NEVER again eat Spam) can but the meat tasted gteat. The can was opened with a roll-up key. We had a sandwich grill and made the sandwiches on Wonder Bread. Making sandwiches for four people from that one can made for pretty thin sandwiches. I wonder if German hard rolls were what we called water rolls. I never found them outside CT and haven't had one in 40 years. Going back to my parents' distain of fast food, and when we were still very poor, our Sunday night supper was always eggs and potatoes. My father always cooked the potatoes, usually as slices fried in a ton of butter on a two burner long griddle pan. When he was in a good mood he would take the time to make real french fries. A can of Crisco was melted in a deep pot and we peeled REAL potatoes for him to deep fry. Each batch was placed into a clean paper bag and shaken to remove extra grease. Then, they were shaken with salt and we had the best fries I have ever tasted. I recall making real fries once when my kids were little. They shared them with their friends and they sure disappeared fast! Oh, yeah, how about going to the local drug store and getting a good sized Hershy bar with almonds for a nickel???? Another treat was parking near the local airport to watch the planes land and take off. There was a hot dog stand nearby and sometime we got foot long hot dogs. No Belgian Waffle has ever tasted as good ones I had first at the World Fair in New York in the 60's. My family was terribly poor and a special treat was a Sunday ride and a stop at the God Humor truck. I think they cost 15 cents back then. A quick lunch, considered healthful, was a Horlick's Choclate Malted milk with a raw egg beaten into the whole milk!!! God they were good!

Lets see for me that was 10 years ago. I had been married for 4 years,had a 4 year old daughter, and 1 year old son. I was a stay at home mom. Now Im 31 been happily married for 14 years (considering that me and hubby were 17 when we married,I think were doing pretty good),have a 14 year old teenager (who will be in high school next year),and 11 year old son (who will be in middle school). They both consider us OLD! Weve added a min-pin and great dane. Oh ya,and I work full-time now. Even though we had some tough times I wouldnt trade my life for the world! :0) -Smile247

December is a busy month in the Xmas City but all the more reason to check it out.

I like The Apollo on Broad Street for lunch or dinner. Mama Nina's on Main St is good, very garlicky Italian food. Also on Main St is Alando, which is Kenyan cuisine. I haven't tried the Thai place on Main but it's on my short list. The Cafe on Broad St is also very nice.

For breakfast or lunch, Blue Sky, near LU main campus on the southside, is very good. I'll probably think of other places after I hit submit.

For shopping Main St is very charming with many options. Definitely try the Moravian Book Store & Gift Shop (I believe it's the oldest, continuously operating book store in the U.S.). There are many gift shop places, a few jewelry, even some food specialty shops (oils and chocolates) all on Main St.

There are all sorts of great shops on the Lehigh side of the river also. Monsoon Gallery, Home & Planet and Tallarico's chocolates to name a few.

Personally, I wouldn't waste the money to go to Christkindlmarkt on the Steel Stacks property (on the southside). It's modeled after a German market but I've never been very impressed with the vendors & crafts or the prices. The Chamber of Commerce is also trying an outdoor German market thing this year with little wooden stalls set up through out Main St. They also feature crafts people but with the advantage of no charge to see them, unlike the other outdoor market.

If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them. Have fun! Stay until dark so you can see all the lights, including the Star of Bethlehem on South Mountain.

* Kinda cool that someone "here" (GW!) actually lives in a city that NDSU will play in Fargo.
* Just dropped ~$200 on tickets for my family & Brother's fam. ($25ea.)
* Finally heard that the game is next Sat. @ 3pm CST, on an ESPN network.
* I imagine Lehigh is frantically preparing the team/etc. for the long trip to ND?!?!?!?
* I HOPE they're FLYING?!?!?!? I can't imagine a long-a$$ bus-ride, no matter how nice the seating!
* What are your local sports outlets/media saying about the game?! Has anyone heard of Fargo...LOL!!!

I wondered if you were there HHIReno (from the Trader Joe's thread where you talked about your Wegmans) -- My cousin teaches at Lehigh and my son goes to Lafayette. I love the countryside there, and as you mentioned, the grocery shopping can't be beat!

Hate to admit it, but Lehigh's got a great football team this year...

I mentioned this to my DH and he said "Oh, yeah I was going to tell you about it, I thought you had an Imaginary Friend in Fargo." Hmm, I am shocked to find out he knows this. Who knew he listened to my ramblings.

As to what the buzz is? I only look at the sports section to flip it over to check the weather on the back page. I will monitor the situation this week and see what they have to say.

Go Engineers! No wait, they changed the mascot in the past 15 or so years (to much controversy from the alumni). Go Chicken Hawks! No wait, that's not it, that's Bugs Bunny. Go Mountain Hawks (I think)!

thanks jean!!! i will plan to do some exploring on either the 17th or the 23rd...or maybe some of both!! the 17th is a morning meet-so maybe visit some shops, and the 23rd is an evening meet-so maybe dinner and lights!!! about time we explore the town after years of going up there! (tried to encourage my son to apply to lehigh, but he's resisting!)

Have him take a look at Lafayette. To say that school utterly transformed my son wouldn't be an overstatement... He has been intellectually stimulated, challenged and nourished there.

They played here this Sept., in the Fargodome. I THINK it was our 1st game....
We beat-'em pretty bad, but it was fun to "see" another team from "out East", as we Mid-westerners might say!

I'm glad your Son found a good school! A great college can flip a switch in people, and equip them for life in a way.

In football-
I'm not sure why NDSU plays so many teams from out East?!
It's pretty neat to ME though!
Last year, our 1st-round playoff win was when Robert-Morris came here.
This fall...Lafayette, James-Madison, & now Lehigh have/will visit the Fargodome!

Hi Faron,
I read (okay skimmed) an article yesterday, recapping the win against somebody or other and the only mention of the upcoming game was that they are on to an even greater challenge against the No. 4 team in the country. The coach was quoted as saying "I'm sure they're very, very good".

I didn't see any articles about the game in today's paper. I'll keep checking the rest of the week. I have a friend who works there, in the music dept, so I'll ask her about the campus scuttlebutt.

I don't know if this helps or hurts your case but Lehigh used to always rank right up there with top party schools. I think when Lehigh didn't make the list, Layafette did. That info might appeal to him, and repel you. I haven't seen any ranking in years, since my older niece & nephews were looking at schools.

he's been looking further south--wants warmer weather he says... i don't know-it's december and 60d today-pretty warm!!! lol

Hi again Faron,
There is a very nice article in today's paper about your coach Bohl. The headline is NDSU coach is Bohl'ed over by LU

All very complimentary about what a great guy he is and it's no wonder he's a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award, which salutes the best FCS coach.

Bohl said the crowd noise in the dome was a 12th man last week & he's hoping the crowd will be a factor this week. He's quoted "I want to say thanks to the students for making it a great event. They raised the bar & made a difference in the game."

The article mentions that LU played in a dome at UNI but many of the students were home for Thanksgiving so they might have had it easy, noise-wise.

It includes 3 pictures: one color pic of Sam Ojuri, a b&w of Bohl, and a b&w of Brock Jensen.

I'd be happy to mail it to you if you're interested in this and any other article.

Today's article was about a kid from a local high school that plays for LU. The most interesting thing was he said they have noise pumped into the stadium where they practice to help them prepare but they know it will still be 10x louder because of all the people and the emotions.

Yeah....the "Thunderdome" as we call it, does get DAMN loud! Some of the domes in the upper-midwest DON'T have endzone bleachers....just sideline only.
The Fargodome HAS endzone seats, Rows A thru LL???
So, any visiting team on offense between the goal-line and ~ the 20yd line has BIG problems and false-starts. You can just see the endzone seats in the back left of this pic. They go up the FULL height that the sides do.

The UNI-dome, Grand-Forks' UND's Alerus-Center, & SD-State's (or USD's?) "Dakota-Dome" DON'T have end-zone seats. Just an endwall just past the endzone's back edge!

In the linked pic, our Bison come out of that big Bison helmet, at the end of the LOUD AC/DC "Thunderstruck" intro./video! I'll be sitting up near those TV/press-boxes, on the 40yd-line closest to the camera.

Today's story was on the front page of the paper as well as the front page of the sports section.

All-American wide receiver Ryan Spadola has been suspended for forwarding a tweet from a high school friend that included a racial slur.

Regarding the suspension for the tweet, Coach Andy Coen said in a statement: "When he re-used the words, he made them his."

He was 98 yards away from setting the FCS single season record for receiving yards. He is thought to have the ability to make the NFL. He is also a regional academic honoree & a member of the Patriot League's All American team.

The reporter writes that Spadola wouldn't survive on LU's racially-diverse squad if he was really a racist and that he got caught up in the pregame smack talk.

Spadola's apology statement: "At the time I received and forwarded the tweet, I didn't stop to think about how this could be offensive."

The articles point out it's a struggle to find the right balance between not restricting a player's freedom of speech while also enforcing a proper code of conduct.

What a mess and what a painful learning experience for the whole team. He will not be flying out today with the rest of the team.

Rest up today, after your leg surgery, so you're in good form for climbing the bleachers at tomorrow's game.

Oh man...
That seems to ME to be a kinda weak reason to suspend somebody!!!! Since he's a college-age person, getting caught up in "the smack talk" as you relayed, can be fairly easy IMO. I think he should at least be allowed to TRAVEL with the team for G*d's sake!!!
I feel for the kid, especially since it seems he didn't really mean it...

(I don't know, and haven't seen the content of the slur however)

I hope it's a good game, and that your team can bring a lot of fans!!
Is there any "Fans'-plane", or any tour-bus groups being organized for the long trip to Fargo?!?!!

I guess it was the NCAA doing this! I thought it may have been a "Team only" action.

The Forum article I'm linking says it was a "repugnant racial reference" to describe Towson-U players. IF he used and/or forwarded the "N" word, then I'm all for any suspension. That is the UGLIEST word I can think of! It makes my skin crawl...

Yeah Baby!!

ESPN finally relented and will televise the game locally here, and to whomever else wants to pay $24.95 for the ESPN-Gameplan telecast.

It took a lot of fans calling/emailing, and a couple of our ND-Congressmen to prod it along, but ESPN WILL televise this weekends FCS-Playoff games thru their Gameplan network.
This is SUCH good news for people here who couldn't make it to the game!!

The attached article from this afternoon notes that the Maine vs. Georgia-Southern game will also appear in that package.

My DH is shocked by me reading all these sports features in our paper and even the one you linked. I've read more about sports in the past 5 days than I have in all the since I've learned to read.

I didn't realize the game wasn't going to be televised. My DH said he can watch it on the computer but that's not something that he would do. I guess I'll have to read tomorrow's sports page to get the outcome.

At least you guys could go to a Bar/restaurant in your area that has it?!??! LOTS of people here do that in the "Sports-Pub" kinda places! You wouldn't have to pony-up the $25 anyway....

Well actually, I wouldn't even go next door to watch it if it were being played there. But that was nice of you to suggest a way to find the game. Now that you say it, I would assume some bar over near the campus will have it on.

My DH is out this afternoon with his Mum, at an Xmas related show & meal. It's her birthday present. He tries to find something they can do together instead of giving her more stuff. He's a good son. And a great husband - I'm not expected to go along! A little Mommy & Me time is good for both of them.

A 24-0 Bison shut-out!!

We fumbled a couple times early-on, but kept them from scoring!!
It was a fun game.

Now the Georgia-Southern Eagles have to come to the Fargodome!! They beat-up on the Maine Black-Bears today I believe.

Montana stomped-out the Univ. of Northern Iowa too. So now Montana plays Sam-Houston next wknd.

Now there's no CAA (Colonial Athletic Assoc.) teams left in the tournament. James-Madison, and now Lehigh are out...courtesy of the Bison!

Enough about the teams - how did you make out at the game, just days post leg surgery? It must have been tiring to do so much walking & climbing bleachers. Rest up for the next few days since you probably overdid it yesterday.

Leg did OK...had to walk a Looooonnng ways just to get into the dome! Climbing was OK. Asked people in our row if I could sit on the aisle-seat, so my right leg could extend more. They were nice! So, everyone just shuffled-over 3 seats, so that my DW, DD, & I were at beginning of our row. Our seats were originally near the middle of 16-across sections.

Kinda funny LEAVING the dome and walking to the car!
Traffic gets sooooo slow when 18,000 people are leaving! As I was "peg-legging" it back, I was keeping-up with traffic...LOL!

Surprisingly, no soreness or pain...YET!
I DID take a Vicodin to the game though, just in case. Again, no need yet...even today!
