Samsung Launches Steam Front-Loading Washers and Dryers

Samsung Electronics introduced the Vibration Reduction Technology (VRT) Steam Super-Capacity 448 line of washers and dryers. VRT reduces noise and vibration, and allows the washer to sit in more convenient locations, close to living areas or second floors, even on pedestals. The steam cycle in the washer and dryer reduces the need for ironing by relaxing wrinkles and can freshen up clothes and remove odors. The washers also feature SamsungÂs SilverCare technology, which sanitizes laundry in cold water without bleach. The Samsung 448 line also features a 1300 RPM maximum spin speed.

Steam seems to be a big thing these days in laundry. I wonder what the long-term maintenance cost/issues might be on this addition? I guess if a steamer fails it makes no difference in actually completing a load so that's a good thing. More power to additional features!

Yah and if the steamer gets rusty or clogs like steam irons what does that do?

What benefit is derived from steam in the washer anyway? Seems to me that steam in the washer must have been something dreamed up by the marketing wonks to sell washers (Ooooh, steam! It must be better...). For the life of me, I can't figure out what benefit steam would add in an already wet washer drum. If you wash in hot or warm water, you're going to have steam, anyway. If you wash in cold water, any steam generated by the machine would simply condense back to water, as soon as it came into contact with the cold washer drum or the cold water.

If youÃ¢ÂÂre considering the Samsung models also check out the Sears Kenmore Elite models which are built for them by Samsung. We got the 263 649 308 4.0 cu ft model (Canadian #) in the Blue Silver color. It is based on the Samsung 218/219 model with extra features (a diamond drum, 1300rpm withVRT, small items Ã¢ÂÂcatch basketÃ¢ÂÂ and a front drain hose). It also has side handles . . . really nice to help put in place when the fit is tight . . . these are very heavy machines (maybe all FL are????). It has a very good energy rating . . . in the top third of machines I believe and very simple to use. We are very happy with the performance. A much better job than the Whirlpool top loader it replaced. I would recommend using about 60% of the recommended amount of HE powder and simply white vinegar for the rinse. If function is more important to you than matching "styling" (really, now, how much styling can be applied to a laundry appliance?), then go with a Whirlpool-manufactured dryer with a drop-down "hamper" front door. It is sold under various brand names, but Whirlpool and Sears Kenmore are the most prevalent. They have been in production forever, and any kinks or bugs in the design were eliminated years ago, and parts are readily available everywhere. Any repairman can service one (usually, the only service required is to replace the drive belt every decade or so) in his or her sleep. For the washer, as others will attest, an in-washer water heater is a good feature, as is a dimpled drum (such as the Miele "honeycomb" drum or the Samsung "diamond" drum) that minimizes fibers of the clothing from being pulled through the drainage holes during the high-speed spin operation. We have this washer, we used it for 8 months and it cleaned great. Unfortunately it has died and after 2 unsuccessful repair attempts Samsung is buying it back. After what I have read about Samsung I think it was a lucky break it is being bought back we are debating between LG and Whirlpool. Our 2001 Whirlpool Duet did great and needed only a few repairs over the years, I could repair it myself and wound up cleaning the machine and selling it. Now I wish I had just kept it till it couldn't be fixed!

Here is a Korean article raising the concern of nano-silver technology and its human safety. It is interesting that they are treading cautiously as not to upset Samsung!

A: You get to spend money on a service call and replacement parts. Cold water over time is highly corrosive and now we introduce a feature that makes that look clean. Boiling off water to make steam is a great way to make a science fair project inside your washing machine. What a combo - an appliance to clean clothing coupled with a pool of disgusting mineral laden crust sitting inside a steam generator. I'm sure glad LG got everyone believing this was a good idea. Clearly a feature designed by the marketing department not the engineers.
