Open shelves or glass cabinet over the refrigerator?
Comments (7)I currently have a 36 in. wide 12 in. deep cabinet far back over the refrigerator. I have opened it once in the last 10 years. So, it's basically not used and is just filling in the space I could use for display. Actually, I use the top of the refrigerator in front of this cabinet for display. I also have a 27 in. wide cabinet over the built in oven and microwave combo, at 67 in. off the floor. I use it for vertical storage of cookie sheets, etc. I hate it! Over the years it has become the "stuff the big items in" cabinet. Even if I get dividers I don't think this type of cabinet will work for me. Instead, I will place the oven under the countertop, eliminating this big cabinet, opening up the kitchen, and have a stack of drawers next to it. So, cookie sheets and muffin tins will go into one drawer, roasting pans into another, serving trays into another, etc. No more digging or stuffing in a large cabinet for me! This is why I do not want to put a 36 in. wide 24 in. deep cabinet over the refrigerator... but need to think through how display shelves will work with everything else on that wall of the kitchen. Also, we have a wall on one side of the refrigerator that comes out 20 inches. So, I don't want a 24 inch deep cabinet extending past that wall, closing in the kitchen (or 29 inch if we want the full build in look for this non countertop depth refrigerator)....See Moreover refrigerator cabinets
Comments (17)Thanks for all the pictures of your over fridge cabinets. I think we've decided to put one long horizontal shelf on bottom of cabinet, with a long verical divider between it. That still leaves a pretty big space above the horizontal shelf. Cabinet maker said it will be no problem for us to remove this and change the shelving if we decide this doesn't work. So, we need to stop worrying about "perfect" solution! It really will be hard for us to know how we'll use this space til we've put rest of items away in other cabinets. We will actually have a lot of new space way up high in upper cabinets over regular cabinets since we had cabinets built to ceiling. It won't be super easy to use (and if I'm here til I'm "old" I'll probably never get to them!), but I can reach all with a step stool, and because I'm so short (5 feet) I pretty much assume I need a step stool even for top shelves on regular cabinets. I did insist that our baking center have upper cabinets that come down lower than standard, just for me! I like the ideas for hiding presents in the space! This gets harder as the kids get older!...See More50 year old wood cabinets paint or stripped and stained?
Comments (112)Teresa, I never post here. Rudeness seems to be the M.O. I was raised way better. i did a refresh on my very small galley kitchen. Repainted the cabinets, new hardware, ended up replacing the floor (big leak and mold) in that awful trendy grey wood look tile, and non stone (I used a lighter shade of wood look tile) counters. New appliances (cheap and black). No backsplash (what are those actually for anyway) other than the counter material going up about three inches. All together way less than $10,000. And my "art" comes from generic places too lol. DIYer is so not me. I am good at using my phone. I have an EXCELLENT handyman. Through Home Advisor. I also have used Handy for putting furniture together. i also lived in a very dysfunctional kitchen before my divorce. Raised seven children and entertained for all twenty five years. Parties of well over one hundred. In a very ordinary 1800 sq ft home. I miss every bit of that. I am glad you went ahead with YOUR plan. I hope to see photos soon!...See MoreMachines on pedestals?
Comments (8)My new-to-me house came with Duet front load washer and dryer already mounted on pedestals. I love them but I'm 5'7" with a bad back. My laundry room is next to the master bedroom, so I prefer to fold everything while watching TV in the bedroom. For service, I think it'd be easier with pedestals rather than harder as the extra height makes them easier to move away from the wall. We just had the water inlets/solenoids replaced and access was from the top and the top of the back. We have not (knock wood!) had to do any big part like a drum or counterweight so I don't know if that'd be different. We just installed a laundry sink and are now going to get cabinets installed. I too had looked at the over-the-fridge cabs since they're 24" deep and I thought they'd be easier to reach. But that created a problem with the cabs on each side since those are only 15" deep and taller: it seemed to become very complicated with including fillers for door-opening clearance and the different heights would bug me. So what I'm planning now is a normal 15" deep wall upper cabinet but with a pullout drawer on the bottom "shelf" (and also the middle "shelf" too) with Ikea cabinets. With the cabinet frame being 14 3/4" deep and the drawer 13 1/4" deep, the front of the full-extension drawer will be 28" from the wall. The front of my WD is 34" from the wall, so I'll be able to reach just fine. I do plan to check with one of their kitchen setups while at Ikea before ordering though, to be sure. HTH...See Moreshannonplus2
