then loved it when you tried it?

I'm sure there are lots of things for me since Mom and Dad were very much meat and potatoes ONLY people. Right now I can think of clam chowder and oyster stew.

I didn't like jam or syrup when I was a child. Weird, huh?

I like strawberry jam now. And I like syrup, but french toast and pancakes must be "dipped" into a ramekin of syrup, not poured all over it.

Liver....never tried it as a kid, but love it now! It just looked so darned gross when my mom used to cook it. I jumped in and cooked it and tried it because DH loves it. Glad I did.....

Saran wrap or the clear wrap sold at Costco. Saran or Reynolds makes colored clear wrap for holidays, so there should be nice Easter-y spring-y colors available right now. But not real cellophane.

Annie my mom had two kids like yours. I would and do eat almost anything, and my brother is one of the pickiest people on the planet I think. But he and I have very different constitutions, and so actually do my parents, so it is the luck of the gene draw sometimes. My brother has allergies very bad, and also I think sensitivities to all kinds of foods, vinegar, tomatoes and soy in particular. He eats extremely plain food, always has. He eats salad with salt and pepper on it. My dad has his basic five food groups that he will eat--meat, potatoes, bread, fat and sugar. Luckily the two male non-foodies in the family will happily eat the same things over and over and over again. So mom made regular food for her and I, and my brother ate hotdogs, cottage cheese, applesauce, milk, frozen fish sticks and french fries for dinner almost every night. I was the salad chef and I had to make four different salads. But mom kept carrot, celery and green pepper sticks around for my brother to eat. He still does that, eats the same stuff over and over, often eats very little of a meal and then fixes his own stuff later in the evening, he's a night owl. About 11 PM when we were growing up, he'd fry up and egg, bacon and some toast. My dad does the same thing, eats on his own, except he eats boxes and boxes of cookies and chips, not anything remotely healthy. Not a good lifestyle and he has the heart disease to show for it, although he was always skinny up until he got old, and he's pushing 80 so I guess he has managed to get away with it for a good long while. The hardest thing is avoiding all the junk dad brings home, I know that was and is a challenge for my mom, since dad can eat it all and seemingly suffer no ill effects but mom has adult onset diabetes. When they used to come and visit me, I tried a lot of things, at first trying to serve healthy version of stuff they liked. No dice on that, my brother wanted plainer food, and my dad went out to the grocery store and stocked up on cookies, chips and candy, and kept suggesting we go out to eat. Then I tried eating like them to keep the peace and I felt ill after a week. Now, they no longer visit me, I go to see them and bring along a cooler and take my own shopping trips to stock up on foods. I take my dad along with me and make him buy me all the out of season and gourment and organic goodies I can no longer afford. Also, nowdays there are a lot of lines of good quality frozen foods that my mom keeps on hand for me. She still has to throw some meat on a plate with bread and potatoes for dad, and then make vegetables, soups and salads for herself. That's one reason I enjoy CF so much, no one in my family likes home cooked foods. Even my brother, who eats relatively healthy since he doesn't eat junk foods and sweets, and drinks only water and milk and fruit juice, doesn't like anything that is not plain, plain, plain. He eats grilled meats with nothing on them, and steamed vegetables or raw ones with just salt on them, and whole grain bread or plain rice. It's healthy but is not really "cooking" by any stretch of the imagination. He's as skinny as a rail. I live alone so cooking is my great pleasure although sometimes I feel bad when I make something really good and have no one to share it with. If I make a lot, even the best food becomes revenge after a while. I once dated a guy about six months longer than I should have just because he was a good eater! But after living with dad and brother, I can accomodate just about any eating style.

My parents grew up with a very narrow range of foodstuffs available, particularly in winter. Mom was a good, but simple cook. We used to say, when she wanted to spice things up, she added salt and pepper. My generation is much more adventurous, as produce from around the world, plus restaurants featuring international cuisines, are now relatively cheap and local. Dad never much liked fish, but as a good Catholic, we always had it on Fridays - usually tinned salmon or frozen fish'n chips. He wouldn't eat it any other day of the week, but I'll eat it whenever.... He also never like Chinese food, although Mom did, and always deferred to him. In his final years, he was hospitalized a few times, and it wasn't unusual for Mom to phone us and say, "They're keeping Dad in for another day. Any chance we can do Chinese?" In her last months, when she lived with us, and proclaimed that all food tasted terrible, she would still sometimes ask, "Any chance of Chinese?" I remember my paternal grandmother as always making out like a Proper English Gentlewoman, and declaring her superiority compared to continental Europeans, especially the ones who consumed GARLIC!! My brother and I visited her grave a few years ago, and noticed that the ground had settled and her marker was a bit crooked. We determined that it must have been caused by her spinning around in it for the past 30 years, as most of the surrounding plots were occupied by Hungarians, Italians, and Poles!

I have done a cookie swap. You bring as many dozen cookies as there are participants. Every person gets a dozen of each kind of cookie. Your dozen you brought for yourself gets put out with tea and coffee for refreshments. Some people go all out and make pretty glitzy cookies, others make mainstays like chocolate chip or peanut butter. The biggest was 12 people. That is a LOT of cookies - it was right before Christams LOL. I have also done a cooking day where you agree on what meals to make. You bring your own casserole dishes and put in for the supplies. Then you spend the day together making and dividing the recipes. One Saturday we made enchiladas, lasagna, pizza, and a turkey noodle casserole. We prepped the ingredients together, and shared making the sauces etc. and building the dishes. Then you wrap them up, take your dishes home, and pop them in the freezer. We made little booklets of the recipes and heating instructions too, which was handy. It was a lot of work, but really fun. Dances.

There are a few things I don't really care for but I keep eating in hopes that I will one day like them. I am doing a little better, but still don't LOVE:
beets
asparagus
brussles sprouts
zuchinni
bell peppers (but can now eat the red and yellow ones)
fishy fish

I can't think of anything that I thought I'd hate but ended up loving. Usually if I think I'll hate it, I'm right. :-)

My parents were from the north and moved to a small town in Ga. in the 30s. My mother hated southern food and couldn't get a lot of foods she grew up with. She didn't fry anything, hated any kind of greens mustards, turnips and collards. She did like spinach but couldn't find it. I tried turnips at a friend's house when I was around 15. Love them and all kind of greens.

When I was a kid, I thought asparagus was the nastiest food there was (besides beets, but I hold to that one!). I thought it smelled like stinky feet.

Now it's my favorite veggie and I cannot get enough of it!

Asparagus lovers - did you ever try it raw? I heard of doing this on some cooking forum and I just love it fresh from the garden. (Love it in any form)

Cream cheese comes to mind. It looked, well, like lard and I wouldn't even try it. But circumstances beyond my control left me with no option but to try....whoppieeeee. Can't seem to get enough now, and love it on everything.

My brother and I both laugh, when we were kids at home Mom always boiled the heck out of any veggie..we hated all of them!
After we were adults and started cooking our own foods we both found out we loved every vegetable, with the exception of poison BEETS! Mom completely ruined us on those, neither of us will even try one!

Venison and rabbit. SIL smoked a venison butt a few years ago and made me try it. Delicious! But rabbits are so sweet, like Thumper! LOL, and since I had them as pets, I won't eat them. Nancy

Anchovies. The smell was always a turnoff for some reason. A few years ago I ate a delicious salad with fried bits of something salty. I was shocked when the waitress told me they were anchovies. I still don't care for them on pizza, but I love them in other dishes. I have even added them to my favorite salad dressing recipe.

As a kid I never liked fresh tomatoes. Now they're the best, can't wait for the first ones from the garden. Store bought is a whole 'nuther story.
Speaking of sauerkraut. Anybody else out there make their own yet? My grandparents were from the "old country" and wouldn't think of buying it. we still make our own.

To me beets smell and taste like dirt. DW loves them pickled.

Yeah, my grandma ruined beets for me by forcing me to eat the nasty beets she used to can. blech! Even the thought of them makes me sick.

I've never tried raw asparagus, but I steam it and like it pretty crunchy, so I don't steam it for very long. I don't really like it boiled, it's way too slimy.

I tried these at teen age but never like them. Now, I love them: Cheese (any type) and Durian (tropical fruit).

Fresh tomatoes, I didn't eat them until I was in my 30's. I still don't like them plain but enjoy them on sandwiches. I also disliked peppers and now love them.

I didn't like a lot of things growing up that I like now. Beans, for example. My mother didn't season things very much...but I love red beans and rice the way I cook it. Hated all vegetables...and especially asparagus, but they ate it canned. I can't stand it mushy...like it barely cooked. Have an old asparagus bed here and often do eat it raw

Just lately I will eat a little jam. I've never cared for it until now.

Never will eat beets and I can't stand sweet potatoes.

I could not stand green peppers when I was younger. DH loved them, so I started trying one now and then. Now I love them, too. Never brussels sprouts, though...I've tried them a couple of times, and did not like them...don't know why, as I like other "cabbagey" things.

Ntt...had some Malaysian friends who introduced us to Durian (they called it jack fruit)....the smell of this fruit is so bad (to say the least)..... but, the flavor is unbelieveable. Our friends used it to bake a cake and it was fabulous....

P.S. Not much I won't eat 'cept liver....yuck....and I still don't like mincemeat....
