GE Profile or LG Front Loader? Need quick advice!

Hi All-

I just received a GE Profile 3.5 cu ft top loader from Sears for $497.00. There was a mix up w/delayed delivery so the manager offered me my choice of either a Kenmore 3.5 or LG 3.5 Front Loader for my inconvenience. They are both in the $800.00 range. Everyone is saying the front loaders are the best thing since sliced bread and are so gentle on your clothing. I just used the GE for the first time and it seems fine except the agitation is very mild. My question is if you had the choice which washer would you go for with everything being equal? I am going to have to live w/my decision and need your expert advice before I make it.

I popped on the Sears website and there was no 3.5 cf Kenmore around $800. If you post the models numbers it would be helpful. By the way, is your washer on a cement floor or on a first or second story wood floor? That can make a big difference in a FLer.

@sweetandrew, to be honest, I've never had a problem no matter what I use. I have used SG liquid and the new powder. I know there are other FL users on this forum who use the new 4X SG liquid in their FL machines. I think liquid is a problem if you do all cold washing and over dose. Learn how to use your new machine properly and it should serve you well - liquid or powder. Some loads need liquid (in my machine Express and Comforter require liquid detergent). I use both liquid and powder (mostly powder now but I do use both). If you like SG, maybe get some of their powder as well and use both (or don't - I think you'd be fine either way). Powders are supposed to be better at removing "clay" based dirt while liquids excel at grease. What you can do if you stick with the liquid is start using oxygen bleach for white loads and lightly coloured loads that are stained. The stuff is amazing and it helps to keep your machine clean. Buy the pure sodium percarbonate (like from Ecover) not OxyClean if you can. FWIW, I've never wiped out my gasket. Leaving the door open ensures that any residual water will evaporate. I do wipe it down after I run a clean machine since I'm usually wiping of the glass door anyway. Please post back and tell us what you get. I've heard some good things about the Whirlpool and the Samsung machines. I can't give any first hand reports though. Both makes rank pretty high on Consumers Reports too (certain models). I can also tell you that I know quite a few people with FL machines - all different brands (Miele, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, Bosch, Maytag). None of them are complaining - they all seem perfectly happy with what they have.

Washer is pretty quiet - it doesn't have the 'jet engine' noise during the spin cycle like some FL do. The control panel is very easy, and you can set up your favorites in the 'My Cycles' button to minimize the button pushing. The dryer is fantastic - it does make some noise, but nothing major. Our laundry room is between our kids' bedrooms, and haven't had a noise complaint from them in 18 months. It is also right above our dining room, and we haven't noticed the noise from below unless we're listening for it (to see if it's still running, or if we need to go up and move stuff to the dryer). Vibration is a non-issue, even on the second floor. On the connection between the washer and dryer, I could take it or leave it. We have it hooked up, and it is sometimes convenient (washer tells the dryer what settings to use), but if you've left stuff in the dryer too long and want to run a de-wrinkle cycle before moving the already-washed stuff in the washer, the dryer starts talking to the washer before you can get the de-wrinkle cycle started, and you have to wait for the 'conversation' to end before changing it back to 'de-wrinkle'. I've been too lazy to unscrew the connector to fix it, but now that I've ranted, I'll probably unhook it tonight.

You know funny this topic would appear, let me tell you our story and see if this helps you. in 2007, my partner and I moved into our home and the laundry room is located in a fully finished lower level that sits on a concrete pad. We purchased the WP Duet Series and within 3 months, Lowes replaced the set because of serious vibrations. We purchased the Bosch Nexxt 500 Plus Series and was pretty happy until about a year ago the washer made hideous sounds while spinning. Now mind you, as you're reading these events, the machines are fully level, HE detergent is used and never a suds in the place, the machines are fully cared for and you'd know because the technicians would be amazed at the care we took with these machines. Fed up, and after 9 visits with the Lowes appliances repair people (the people who Lowes contracts with), they deemed the machine a lemon and bought the set back. My partner and I then went shopping and looked at the Electrolux, and they were just Frigidaire machines with some bells and whistles and then I looked at Miele. We bought the Miele set and never looked back. Yes, they are quite pricey and sure the check from Lowes didn't cover the whole cost, but once you see them in person, you will notice the craftsmanship is far beyond anything that WP, LG, Samsung, Maytag, Electrolux...anyone has out there minus maybe SQ. The machines are built like tanks, their customer service is tops (both in email and in phone call) and the machines clean our clothes like no other. So, I know the Miele set is not on your list but do yourself a favor, go look at them. I don't know what I like more honestly, the washer or the dryer...they are both GREAT machines! I had inadvertently posted this in "Appliance". Thought this would be better served for the "Laundry" folks: OK, top load v. front load. Here's my story. I had the infamous Maytag Neptune W/D front load (tip: if someone tries to sell you a "NEPTUNE" ... run). I had it for 11yrs, going through all the smelly troubleshooting. This past October, I couldn't stand it anymore and started doing my research. My research found: ALL front loaders will exhibit the mildew smell if 1) you don't clean the gasket 2) don't prop the door open 3) use a "sanitizer". I'm all about conserving water and energy and usually wouldn't look twice at a top loader. I was seriously drooling over the new Samsungs ... until I happened upon the new LG top loaders. I found that this new top loader uses about or less than the amount of water that the front loaders use. It also has a great Waveforce technology that doesn't use a "clothes damaging" agitator as the normal top loaders use. I was going to pay the same for a front loader, but didn't want the inconvenience of fighting the mildew. I went for the LG WT5101H (matching dryer) ... and GAVE away the (still working) Neptune set to a womens shelter (and full 'mildew-be-gone' written instructions). Now we've had this for little less than a month. There is no front loader that can handle the loads I can do, using the same amount of water. As previously posted, it also has the Sanitary hot water heater up to 158degrees (that the pricier front loaders have). I also followed many Appliance forums (washer repair specific) and the new GE Profiles, Maytag Bravo's and Kenmore's are on the top of the repair list. I saw nothing for LG top loaders. There is a HUGE 10yr direct drive motor warranty ... that's a big deal. So, yea, here's a vote for this top loader. I won't buy into the overhyped marketing of front loaders too much; although I will agree that they do clean well (not better) and save water. I do not agree that I need to do daily "mildew maintenance" instead of quarterly cleaning. ...and as of today, I just saw Best Buy selling these for 699.00 Here is a link that might be useful: LG WT5101HW Washer

Is this the GE Profile top loader without the agitator in the middle? If so, I just got the Maytag Bravos, which is a similar machine after 8 years with the original Whirlpool duet frontloader and so far it seems ok. The one problem I have with it is how wrinkled the clothes come out of the washer without the agitator, but the wrinkles do come out in the dryer. If yours is the GE Profile formerly known as the Harmony, I have heard good things about it. Do a search on the forum for GE Harmony and read the posts. As far as front loaders go, they use less water and are gentle on your clothes. If you have a second floor laundry room, go with the top loader or use the front loader without the pedestal stands or you will have too much vibration. The only other negative I experienced with the frontloader was that mildew collects in the rubber seal, so you have to be careful to keep the door open when not in use and clean it with clorox every so often. Also, I needed the pedestals as it hurt my back to bend so low to take the wet laundry out of the front loader. With the pedestals, it's fine, but the pedestals caused more vibrations and shaking. Sounds like whatever you choose, you have been blessed by the mix up! Which washer were you expecting for $497?

Hi All-

The GE Profile model #WPRE6100G1WT that I originally ordered and received yesterday for $497.00. On Thursday Sears finally said that the GE wouldn't be in until May 5th but it came in on Friday. While waiting for the washer the manager offered me a choice of the only 3.5 cu ft or larger washers they had. He offered me a choice of a Kenmore or LG Front Loader that he said sells for $750-800 each. Since the GE Profile finally came in my DH picked it up and installed it but forgot to remove the moving bar. The first load made this horrendous knocking sound. THEN HE REMOVED IT, DUH! Do you think much damage was done? Well, the manager still wants to offer me the choice of the front loader which we can p/u Wednesday. This washer if I choose to return the GE Profile will be off the kitchen in my ranch style home. It will be behind closed folding doors so leaving the washer door open in winter might be a problem and even anytime because I like the doors closed. I have heard so much about the FL but don't know what to do. The GE seems to be running fine except not much agitation. Need your sage advice.
