Asked to write letter of recommendation.......help!

i am retiring next week. My coworker totally caught me off guard today when she asked for a letter before I go. She is a secretary and I am an admin asst.

I explained that I thought this was usually done by a supervisor, not an "equal." She was insistent that it is appropriate. Yes or no?

More importantly, I would find it difficult to recommend her. She was always charged with part of my job when I was on vacation but she did it half-a$$ed and I would come back to a stack of stuff. I would sit with her and go over the stack and show her the ropes, but the next time it would be the same thing all over again. Clueless boss thought she was getting it done because said boss never showed any interest in my job whatsoever so never bothered to ask or check. I never said anything until recently when boss said "at least Sally can handle that part of your work until a new person is trained." I felt I had to tell boss at that point......no, she really can't.

I will say she is more knowledgeable than me about Word, Excel, etc; however she wants me to say how she did my job whenever I was away. She freaked out when I told her I was retiring because she knew boss would probably find out she wasn't doing the work. She even asked me if I had said anything to boss....and I hadn't at that point.

Honestly, I don't think she even does her own job very well i.e if there's a meeting and she has to make 50 copies of ten different pages she always screws it up..goodness...how hard is that? Lots of dumb mistakes like that. I will say she is a nice person with a big heart, but I don't think that counts here.

Sorry to be long......what would you do?

Though it is appropriate, I would simply tell her you are sorry, but you do not feel comfortable writing that sort of letter. Period.

I agree. I think you can say that since you are retiring and will not be available should anyone want to check her references, that a recommendation from you would be moot. You can also say that the boss will have a better idea of how well she managed your job when you were gone, because, well, you were gone!

I have to share a very TRUE story of my own! Our youngest daughter, 'Stefanie', had a very special friend that been in her class with her from kindergarten to the 4th grade, and after telling our daughter she didn't feel well on a Friday at school, she was rushed to the hospital the next day with the progressed symptoms of bruising all over her body and cracked and bleeding lip, bleeding from the navel, etc. A week later, she went into a coma, after complaining of a severe pain in her head and after days of waiting for improvement and having no brain activity during that time, they allowed her body to die. Our daughter was, of course, devastated and wanted to have her friend, 'Bonnie', back from heaven. I told her that was not possible. She wanted to pray to her and asked if it would be okay! I told her, that whereas God is the only one we can pray to, He or Jesus would be glad to tell 'Bonnie' what she wanted her to hear, if she asked Him to deliver her message to her! She then asked me if 'Bonnie' could come back to her from heaven. I told her, "No, that is not possible and besides she's so happy there she doesn't want to come back!" That really upset her and she said "Well, I want her back!" Then she wanted to know if 'Bonnie' could talk to her from heaven? I said not really in a way she was expecting, but one day they would be together again to talk all they wanted! The next day, her 2nd grade teacher phoned me, to ask if she could give Stefanie something she found in her garage. She had gone out there and looked around and thought that she should really try to organize and throw away some stuff from previous classes she had been saving. She walked over to the very first box and right on the top of the contents was a note from 'Bonnie' to 'Stefanie', apparently written 2 years before! It said: "Dear Stefanie, You are my very best friend--I love you so much!!!! Love, Bonnie" Of course, I agreed that it would be a very good thing to give to Stefanie--in fact--'very timely'!! The next day, Stefanie came running in after school, leaped into my arms and told me how 'Bonnie' had written her a note and asked me if it was possible it came down from heaven? I told her, that it was more likely, that God knew that she would need to hear from 'Bonnie' that day, and so He made sure that it was saved and found at that very time, to be given to her!! I can certainly tell you, it impacted that little girl, greatly, at a very tender age and time to realize that God is so *in control* and knows what we will need, even before the need ever arises! And, that He is willing and faithful to meet the deepest needs of His children!! A truth, played out over and over in my own life!! He is so good to us!!

I am a secret tacky-Christmas-letter lover. When we get one where all the writer does is brag, I laugh and find it entertaining. Also feel a little pity for the poor souls who are in such denial of the real world. I really do enjoy hearing about people's lives. Some friends of my husband (people I have never met) send letters and now I feel I know them personally. We started writing one about 6 years ago when we had a disaster home problem (broke in half, condemned. sorry wrong forum) and everyone wanted to know every year how it, and the law suit was progressing. I got so tired of writing all the details over and over (especially because I have arthritis in my hands) so I just typed it all up, added a little info on our work, told about the dog's activities and sent it on. The first year, I changed the name at top and added a personalized paragraph, but since I print it out at work (sshhh) and use fancy Hallmark paper, it was taking up a lot of time. So now I do the tacky-Christmas-form-letter and hand write a small personal note. This way I can go in to work early one day and run them off before anyone knows. I absolutely hate getting a card from someone with just their names written on it. Even worse is the name stamped on it with my name and address typed on a computer label. I feel like I am just a nuisance that people feel need to be taken care of and do it in the quickest, less painful way possible. I am also very busy but start at Halloween and address just 1 or 2 a day. It's easier to add a personalized note when that person is the only one I need to think of that day.

You can certainly do what Sheilajoyce suggested, but if you want to include his name in the cover letter (which I assume is going out with the resume) I would get it in right at the beginning: Dear (whoever in Human Resources), Craig Willoughby (or Craig Willoughby of Willoughby Electronics, you get the idea) suggested that I contact you regarding available employment. And then go on from there about the applicant. I think it's important to mention the name right off the bat. For one thing, you don't know how much of the cover letter will be read.

They sent the wrong color part because they keyed in wrong model number. so we got part for black range, not SS. They said they would send out correct one but never did. My husband has spent YEARS (it seems) on hold trying to get them to send out SS part with numbers on it. Finally got someone who knew what they were doing to talk to him today. Had to practically begin process all over again but they saw their error and say they will send out SS part. Hope so…but who knows? If they would only send out new set of decals for these appliances it would be far easier and less expensive for LG. I’d be willing to pay for a couple sets since my range is only 7 months old. Since I did not scrub the numbers on my range to begin with, the new part may not hold up either. Doubt water alone will remove grease spots or spatters. :(

I would just say no, you are not able do write the letter, and leave off any explanations.

You have already explained "no". Just leave and forget it. If she asks again, remind her you already answered no. Although I am curious why she wants the letter, perhaps to get your job. Just curious, wouldn't go there and extend the opportunity for her to ask again. She may be nice, and proficient in some requirements, but sounds to me like she doesn't "get it". Which means she will keep asking until you use the one word no.

Don't do it and don't make an excuse with a lie.

Just apologize and say your are "not able" or you are "not in a position" to write the letter. If she persists, then she's being rude and then a simple but firm "no" is all you need.

How many days left Joanie? My goodness, never a dull moment in that place.
I agree with the group. If she persists, just keep repeating the same things. "So sorry. but I don't feel I'm in the position to write a recommendation letter."

Your boss is in for a rude awakening. Do you have a few friends there who can fill you in on the fall out once you leave? Should be interestingÃ¢ÂÂ¦...

I agree with the above. A firm "no, I wouldn't be comfortable doing so" should be enough. I would hope that she will have the grace to not inquire as to why.

Agreeing here too. However, I do know that some people can't take a simple 'no' for an answer, so be prepared to hold your ground. I'm with ellendi, I hope you can get the 'rest of the story' once you leave, just for kicks.

Obviously she doesn't feel her (and I suppose your) boss would write a letter of recommendation or she doesn't want the boss to know she's looking for a new job. The later is certainly reasonable.

Since you're retiring and she's not a very good employee anyway, let her be someone else's problem. Writing a glowing recommendation! ;-0

Ha ha Ellendi....yes the place has been a laugh a minute the last 4 years! Things will be fine as far as my job goes, the person replacing me is smart as a whip and I told her she can email or call if she really gets stuck....and I know she won't be a nuisance.

Thanks everyone.....my hope is she doesn't bring it up again, but if she does I am going to repeat that I think it's inappropriate writing such a letter for a coworker...that it should come from a supervisor. If she presses, I will explain that such a letter won't carry any weight with anyone since she only did one aspect of my job a few times a year. Hopefully that will nip it in the bud.
