Which brands provide access for the totally blind?
Comments (18)Mielemiele- I will try to check out additional EU brands. Life has created a certain level of cynicism regarding adaptive technologies, but reading posts here has encouraged me to re-educate myself. My cynical side thinks it will come down to a handful or fewer models that are available with adaptive access. Also, through some calling around yesterday to dealers and service providers I'm beginning to think that my location may mean that the EU brands will pose problems in terms of service / parts. I need to figure out how to do one of those searches with my zipcode to see if there will be service coverage in my area for the brands. As for the tax thing, I don't think so? Gordon- Your thoughts on TL v FL were excellent. Some blind folks are exquisitely adept with their hands. Some of us are not! Well, I can deal with just about any plant / garden issue that comes around. Because that's my passion. Pouring things, dispensing things, however, is something I hate. My perfectionism comes out and I can turn a 15 second job into a 15 minute one. Of course, it might be good for me to struggle and persevere! Then again, maybe not. I like sorting the laundry, throwing a load in, setting the machine, letting it fill with water, and then dumping in whatever I think the clothes might need. Hmmmm . Did I just confess to a Laundry Room Forum heresy? Sorry, you will have to absolve me so that I can get the wash going and return to the on-line garden catalogs. Seriously though, I think you clarified a point for the TL side. Oh, yes, it's also interesting to hear about your use of Brl for darkroom purposes. cmc- Your comments about your friend reminded me that there is more than one way to approach this purchase. Sounds like she chose products primarily based on what she wanted and then figured out how to adapt it for use. Or maybe, like me with some of my appliances, she adapted pre-existing appliances for her own use. Since I'm buying new, I'll be starting my search with the ones that have been adapted with accessible ctrls. But, as some have suggested here, there might be something that works with a little added adaptation from DH. That part of the decision will be determined by quality, price, and service support. Emagineer- Greetings to you and your daughter. My Mom is encouraging from the sidelines and I have her doing a little research on flooring options for our lower level. It's and "eyeball" thing, meaning I trust her opinion about how things really look. The floor choice is for most of the lower level, which is where the laundry room is located. Perhaps more on that later in a new thread! I guess my preference is still for the ctrls that have already been adapted. Last time DH just popped out the standard ctrl panel plate and put in the one with Brl. It's actually not that much Brljust raised dots at key points on the setting dial, abbreviations for sm, med, and lg loads, same thing for temperature settings, and an additional ctrl for gentle or normal action. It would be handy to have the name of the product for raised dotsin case my best choice turns out to be WDs that do not have adaptive ctrls or have inadequate ones. Thanks again. Comments (21)We bought our Miele 5 year warranty on the washer, dryer, and dishwasher. When we save enough for the Miele Fridge and Freezer I want, we'll put the 5year on them as well. The cost of the warranty (five years) is negligible compared to one service call. My "old" Miele Washer/Dryer (seven years old) were gone thru by Miele and totally reconditioned before I gave them to my daughter. I replaced ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that even "seemed" worn or as though it "might" fail in the next year or so, including screw covers and cosmetic only parts. The total cost of that "complete refurb" was only about $550 parts and labor & AFTER spending that money for the "complete refurb" my factory service rep certified to Miele corporate what had been done/replaced/etc., and they allowed me to buy a five year warranty on the old machines! I was amazed! So for a little over a grand out of daddies' pocket, my kid got a "like new" set of Miele's that are under full warranty for five more years. How many manufacturers would even consider such a thing? Damned few in my experience. Immer Besser! (Forever Better - the Miele Motto in German) However in the UK, Miele offers a 10 year warranty on their "top of the range" (read most expensive) machines. Standard, not at extra cost. Comments (31)We agree that HE machines use less water therefore less water has to be heated to whatever temperature is chosen. I believe this is obvious. The ES guidelines say nothing about ambient water temps, nor do they define "hot" or "cold" in the formulas or in the text. To get the ES rating/label, the manufacturer only has to comply with the formula. One of the annoyances for consumers researching current HE machines is trying to learn exactly what each manufacturer means when they say or write "cold", "warm", and "hot" for a particular machine. (which intentional obfuscation has been discussed to death on other threads.) For example, my HE machine (Duet 9400 from 2/95) has buttons for selection of cold/warm/hot. If I select "hot" in a cycle that doesn't use the built-in heater, and purge the line so that 130F water flows in from the first drop, my actual wash temp is about 105F. Due respect to Whirlpool and the US government's ES formula, that is NOT what I or anyone I know considers to be hot. Hot-tub "hot", maybe, but not laundry-hot. I resent this industry-wide obfuscation and/or failure to disclose this most basic of information. Comments (30)This post sort of ties in with the earlier Jenn-Air post, as both Jenn-Air and KitchenAid are manufactured by Whirlpool. Remember that name - WHIRLPOOL. So I bought a whole KitchenAid package last August - a fridge, stove, hood, dishwasher. The fridge has an outside H2O and ice dispenser. There's a nifty electronic reading that reports how much water is dispensed, in ounces. I noticed that an 8 oz. reading on the fridge was really dispensing a tad over 4 ounces. Hmmm....I thought, not a big deal but I should call while it's still under warranty and get this fixed. The first repairman came out and said I needed a new "something or other" and he promptly ordered it. The part arrived in less than a week. The second repairman came out to install it and said I never needed the part in the first place. He said the reading was off because my water pressure was low. So apparently, the water is not actually 'measured', but 'guesstimated' by the time the button is depressed, based on an average water pressure. I thought it was a stupid thing to have a measurement reading when it really doesn't measure anything. My water pressure is good to fair. So I shrugged it off and forgot about it. Until I received a bill for $90 for a service visit that wasn't covered under warranty. I called the service company and Whirlpool (who I think is ultimately responsible for this charge) and both companies insisted that I had to pay this bill. I guess I was supposed to know how Whirlpool engineered their product. I am beyond fuming on this. Remember the name - Whirlpool, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid. If anyone has contact info for someone from Whirlpool/KitchenAid who actually gives a damn about my dilemma, please share it with me.
