A/C Trane Question

I have a Trane XL14I (4) ton unit install in June of 2005 when I built my new home. I live in NE PA where we use the AC for maybe 2 months. Last year (June 2008) the startup capacitor fried.. Last night the unit died again. My HVAC guy came up and said the capacitor went bad (it did not fry this time). This to me seems very unusual. He started down the road of low voltage ect and I informed him I had a transformer installed 60 ft from my home for this very reason as IÂm 700ft from the road.

IÂm not having any other problems with any appliance, light bulbs or heavy duty woodworking equipment I have (5 HP 20" planer, 3HP shaper).

I also notice from day 1 when my AC starts up I get some light dimming. My last house had a 3 Â½ ton York and I never had that problem.

Is this an AC issue? I had our power company check my line twice and I have no problem. I pulled the breaker and checked all the connections.

I was looking at upgrading this to a heat pump to help offset the price of oil but Trane is not impressing me here. My HVAC was suggesting a XL 20 I as a replacement. Plus I canÂt find a number to call Trane so they send you to either a dealer or ask for you to leave them an e-mail.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I'd recommend a Trane rooftop unit anyday. However, how about one with a variable speed blower, or maybe even a dual stage compressor and a variable speed blower? Think about the warranty, too. As far as the compressor goes, I see engineeredgarden has suggested a reciprocating compressor above. To each his own; however, the (seemingly) industry-preferred, and more up to date compressor is the scroll compressor. I wouldn't necessarily let the compressor be a deciding factor, though. If you have a 10-year warranty, that gives you a peace of mind. I believe the XB13c's have 5-year warranties all around.

If you were me, you would run away from Trane hi efficiency heat pumps. I have had the new unit, air handler, new lines for almost 3 years. The installer is certified by Trane and the unit has a 10 year extended warranty. When it was sold to me I was told everything is covered. I now have a 850 dollar bill on my hands because Trane refuses to pay the installer for work that had to be done on the unit last month. They have worked on the unit 5 times in 3 years. I can email you the documents that show that Trane will not back up the warranty, if you send me your email. By the way the unit does not currently work and I am not sure who to call, other than my attorney. Trane seems to not care when issues are pointed out. They go on selling the units like hot cakes and ignore those such as myself that have units that do NOT work. eddie_brown@yahoo.com

garyg, It is an either or situation XL14i with variable speed air handler, aluminum evaporator coil and Trane touch screen thermistat. Include 10 years parts and labor. No need to replace the lines because they are large enough. Heat Pump $ $9105 includes 2 -5K heat strips. or hybrid below 2 XL14i condensor with 2 Stage variable speed furnace $8208. XR13 with variable speed air handler, aluminum evaporator coil and Trane touch screen thermistat. Include 10 years parts and labor. No need to replace the lines because they are large enough. Heat Pump $ 7150 includes 2 5K heat strips. or XR13 condesory with 2 Stage variable speed furnace $6985. Gas rates are somewhat confusing for two reasong 1. They under reported July and caught in August. 2. we have distrubtion rate, gas supply rate,weather normalization adj rate, base rate adj and EE cost rate. All of which is different.

Trane S8X2C100M5PSAA furnace high gas bill

The Trane S8X2C100M5PSAA is a 2-stage 100K BTU input furnace with 80% efficiency. It is hard to imagine a house in Mesa, AZ would need a 100K BTU furnace. What size was the previous furnace? If the size was increased, then I suspect your duct work is too small and this is the reason it is very loud. Do you notice the furnace running in the low and high stages? What thermostat was installed? Even on coldest days I would think this furnace would only run on the low stage and rarely if ever go to the high stage. A static pressure of 0.16 is very low and I am skeptical of this reading. I believe the blower speeds need to be set for both the low and high stages. The speed is set my the temperature rise and not the static pressure. The installation tech does not appear to know what he is doing in my opinion. You need to call the installer and ask for an experienced tech to come out and review the the complete installation.
