cold remedy

I know it sounds silly but it works for me.When my sister told me about this i just laughed but of course i hadn't had a cold in a long time. Well i got a good one now so i thought i'd try her funny remedy .Before going to bed rub the bottom of your feet with vicks and put on some socks so you don't grease the bed.I've been doing it for 3 nights and sleep like a baby and no stuffed nose.Try it, i swear it works...

As a youngster my mother used to rub my chest with Vicks, then put a warm towel over it.

Yes, years ago when my kids were small, I would rub Vicks on the bottom of there feet. It helps the circulation. Also on the chest and shoulder area.

Zicam does nothing for me, but then I already take zinc as a supplement. What I have found to be helpful (and was mentioned in one of grainlady's links) is breathing steam, especially when I first start to feel something coming on. They way I do it is to get a very large mixing bowl (glass), add crushed eucalyptus berries (which I get from the Marina bike trail) and the pour a large amount of boiling water from the tea kettle over the berries. Then I put my head over the bowl and cover both the bowl and my head with a large bath towel, to prevent the steam from escaping. I inhale as much steam as possible and as deeply as possible, and allow any nasal draining to fall into the bowl. I generally have to come up for cool air several times, but the heat from the steam is what can kill the germs in my sinuses. This method gives you a facial at the same time, as it opens your pores from sweating. You do not need the eucalyptus berries - they are there for fragrance, and so you can substitute whatever you like, or even put Vicks in the bowl. Sometimes I use lemon zest. This will not cure a cold, but it will help clear your sinuses, much as nasal irrigation or spicy soup will, but the heat is helpful to prevent a cold from taking hold, if you catch it soon enough. I haven't had a cold in a while, and I felt that the dry air at Death Valley was theraputic. Visiting a sauna might be helpful. Lars

Thanks everyone! Last night I had another hot glass of theraflu then went to bed in the guest room with the window open a crack. I slept really well, but had weird dreams. I woke up feeling like an elephant was sitting on my chest. Seems the nasal congestion migrated to my lungs. So this morning I had another dose of theraflu (it's what we had on hand) and went back to sleep for another 90 minutes or so, then when I woke I took a prednisone. That helped clear my bronchial tubes so I could breathe, and I took a couple puffs off my inhaler. And I've been drinking vigilantly. DH bought me some more drinks and a bouquet of flowers. I've been able to get rid of a lot of the gunk in my system (will try not to be graphic!) I think I can sleep ok tonight if I dose up before bed. I've been dozing off and on all day. Talked to DD, she's got no symptoms, so maybe I didn't pick it up at the school, but at the store I stopped at later. Either way, I'm glad she's ok as she has bad asthma and colds are horrific for her...she sometimes ends up in the ER for breathing treatments. So I've got DH taking the Zicam, and he just cooked up a bunch of veggies with garlic & onions. I can't smell it, but I can taste it in my mouth...isn't that funny? He's drinking lots of OJ, too. He's being a much better nurse to me than I would be to him!

yeonassky, so you know how to do Google searches and the dietitian whose article you linked to knows how to do PubMed searches. But both of you don't necessarily know what to do with what your searches turned up. When your medical doctor starts recommending you take garlic and sage for your cold, then the random research projects that turn up in PubMed and various internet sites will have been put into context and agreed to. (FYI, PubMed is nothing more than a catalog of articles. The dietitian describes it as a trusted source. Think of the card catalog at the library. It contains entries for what can be found in the library. Does that make it a "trusted source"? Are all the books listed good books or worth reading? No, of course not. Being in the catalog means they're available to be found, nothing more. PubMed does the same. Being listed in PubMed is not an endorsement or statement of relevance of the article listed. It's a statement of existence. Lots of worthless and pointless research is done. But an article published exists and so is listed in PubMed. Until further work is done and findings are repeated, research results just hang out and mean nothing. Most aren't followed up on. )

I've heard of this some time ago and have since forgotten it. Thanks for the reminder. I love the smell of Vicks but DH doesn't. It always makes me feel like Mom's around.

My Mom used to rub my chest with Vicks when I had a cold. I love the smell-eucalyptus and camphor and menthol.

I heard this a while ago, and did try it. Funny, I don't recall how well it worked, but I'll try it again next time I have a cold. I do know it made my feet softer!

Tried it last night
as I sat on the couch Big Boy the neighborhood cat who freeloads at my house thought my socked foot was the closest thing to heaven and started using it as a plaything I guess the vapo rub got to him had to pull him off - as a result he clawed me. threw him out into the 22 degree weather.

I stick zicam up my nose and take comtrex stops it .You have to get it first symptoms.

I use Vicks almost every night on my feet. It really does help with circulation. I also have problems with burning, itching feet and Vicks is the only thing that I have found that helps.

When I have a cold, I take ecchinaccea (sp?) pills and Coldeze zinc losenges.

airborne fan, here...but it sure wouldn't hurt dh, except the sock would drive him bonkers...

warning though! don't use vicks inside your nose..he's lost all smell from doing it when we lived in san diego's dry climate, sigh...

... outside the nose being preferable?

I don't smell too well, either ...

... but I don't think that Vicks had anything to do with it.

Or - should that be, "I don't smell too good"?

DS(13) was in bed coughing his head off last night. I remembered this post got up, found my Vick's and conned him into trying it. :) I used to use it back when they were smaller but hadn't in years..anyway

I rubbed some on his feet and managed to get a little on his chest.....Fast forward a few minutes..he calls me back in his room and asks for some more to be put on his chest! I only heard him cough once after that and that was right after..
