Anyone ever been on Warfarin and then come off it?

As you may remember in the middle of last year, I almost died when I developed two massive pulmonary embolisms after surgery. I have been on Warfarin since then. Saw a haemotologist who did a blood test to see if I'm prone to throwing blood clots. it came back negative. He's happy for me now to come off Warfarin, but it's like a crutch for me and I'm a bit scared.I've also been reading about the side effects of Warfarin and they can be scary also. Has anyone ever been on warfarin and then come off it? Were there any side effects/scares etc.?

Yes--DH was on it for a year or so. He was also taking Plavix and full-strength aspirin at the same time. They took him off both the warfarin (Coumadin) and Plavix at the same time, but left him on the aspirin. That was about 6 months ago and he's doing fine. In fact we went to his CHF clinic week before last and his blood work was fine.

Do you have to have blood work every other week to make sure your blood levels are within the limits? He did and they'd adjust his meds every time they were the least bit in the gray area of okay.

Please don't be afraid--I was so happy to have him off it. I think he actually started to feel better.

I had it for about six weeks post-hip replacement surgery. Was monitored twice a week, then right off -- no 'tapering off'. Of course that was for a much shorter time then you've been on it. Why WERE you on it so long anyway?

I probably should be "fitted"- mine are QUITE different in sizes. Get a bra to fit one side and the other billows over the fabric vs. fitting the larger one and I can almost put a pair of socks in the other! LOL Went to a new MD for an annual exam and he asked me "have they always been THAT different". Yep, at least since my late teens! I HATE looking for bras! and refuse to wear underwires!!!!!

Too funny, shades, same thing here. I inherited tons of scraps and the first project I'm starting on, think I need a better blue! One of the problems is, you get a tiny piece of something you fall in love with, need more of it and nothing else satisfies you after that point. Hum...does that sound kind of like meeting a significant other or...dessert in my case? After reading a few posts, I'm even more thankful for you gals. Also, sounds like backorders are a problem so, since I'm close, I won't have to go through that frustration. Fortunately, don't really "need" anything, but...(the battle cry of the mosaicers).

I haven't been on the Voyager but I have been on the Splendour of the Seas. In fact, it was my first cruise and I was sold! So was my mother, who was 75 at the time, and she now has 10 cruises under her belt and looking for more. Royal Carribean does a wonderful job of making you feel like you are the most important person in the world. The food is excellent, the rooms comfortable, the staff will do anything you ask, and they want you to have fun. The theatre shows are great, top-notch entertainment. Bingo is expensive but as the jackpot builds, so does the crowd of people and the jackpot will be won by someone on that cruise. My cruise was 11 nights and the jackpot was over $13k. Do keep some things in mind: 1. Don't drink the soda in your cabin - it's $3.50 a can. 2. Any/all alcohol is NOT included and those $5 drinks add up faster than you think. 3. Coffee/tea/soda are included during meals or any food station you find open. If the waiter asks for your guestcard, you are paying for it. 4. Try new dishes on the menu. If you don't like it, they will bring you another meal but don't wait too long to tell the waiter because they have 1500 people to feed at each dinner and they are on a time limit. 5. Please show up for dinner at the appointed time. No one can be served until all people are at the table. If someone is not coming, tell the waiter. 6. Sign up for any shore excursions asap or it could sell out. Depending on where you are going, you MAY do a better deal with a taxi driver on your own, BUT be careful where you try it. DON'T do it in Jamaica! 7. Have a great time! The water is so blue you won't believe it. You will have to come home to relax and rest. Be sure to let us know how your trip turned out. Wanda

Rhizo, I'm in my early 30's (born in the 80's) so not too young. I have never watched a preacher on TV and I have not spent much time in church. My family, friends and community are not religious, or at least not to the point it ever comes up in conversation. I've heard of Joel Osteen though if that helps! Mostly from the internet and from when someone gave my mom a book of his. I was puzzled as neither she nor the gift giver were religious but then I saw the middle was carved out and it held some products for my mom to use in her cancer battle! Back before it was legal in many states. I know how you feel though. I was talking to a 21 year old friend and he had no idea who Whitney Houston was. I couldn't understand how someone in the US and born in the 90's had never even heard of her so I guess it's all relative.

First DH was put on warfarin(by cardiologist) after two femoral artery (leg) bypasses due to clots.
He was on it for 4-5 years. And had blood work every 2 weeks, and they always phoned and adjusted the dosage up or down, maybe only 1/2 pill.

When he was diagnosed with AAA (Abdominal aneurysm) and needed surgery, Vascular surgeon wanted him to see cardiologist that he worked with before doing surgery. This cardiologist told him that Warfarin was overkill, and too difficult to manage...and took him off Warfarin and put him on Plavix.

Of course, a few days before surgery he had to go off the Plavix. After surgery, cardio told him to stay on the Plavix.
Bloodwork never showed any problems after that.

He didn't have any problem going off the Warfarin....and actually felt better with the Plavix.

My DH is due to come off it soon. He went off Plavix a year ago and feels much better. There are no studies (except for the drug company) to prove that Plavix does any more than a low dose asprin. I guess everyone is different. I for one can't wait for him to come off the Warfarin. DH is a mechanic and I'm always afraid of him getting cut. He can hardly wait to eat leafy veggies and broccoli again.
