If you are new here - you may find the following FAQ link helpful. This website contains much helpful information about how to navigate this site as well as the world of kitchen renovations.

Please - do not post a reply to this post, as it will push this message off of the top. Once this message is past page one - please start bumping. Lets see if we can challenge our members to keep this on the top.

I used to be better about managing this but I moved out of my kitchen remodel and am now wishing for another. The more I am on this site the more depressed I get about my kitchen. Therefore, help me keep this link in the front! i just can't afford another new kitchen!!!

Seedmama - welcome, welcome, welcome! We really need more people from Oklahoma "entertaining" the butterflies with hosts and nectar plants and I'm glad to hear you are helping their cause. There are a lot of people on the Oklahoma Forum, too, that are interested in providing habitat for the butterflies, but not all of them post here. I encourage you to check out the Monarch Watch website as well. I am a Monarch Waystation, as is Linda and Sandy, and I live close to downtown in the older area of Oklahoma City. I "grow" lots of butterflies and sphinx moths, too, since I have a lot of their food plants that were planted here many moons ago (like Elm, Hackberry, Virginia Creeper, etc.). Some of the most common trees, shrubs, and forbs are host to a myriad of butterflies and moths. I winter sow a lot of my butterfly plants. Gives me something to do in the winter when its cold, wet, snowy, or icy. My seeds didn't do as well this winter (2006-2007) as they did last winter (2005-2006) for some reason. And, I'm finding that a lot of the native plants seem to do best just direct sown on the ground. I think they don't like all that rich potting soil, but prefer the lean soil they grow in naturally. Sorry to get off track here. Linda, as I said last night - your article was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed it. While they didn't mention Monarch Waystations, they at least provided a link to Monarch Watch which, hopefully, some will check out. So I seem to have been able to do all that I wanted to know how to do. Now for some comments... I like knowing how to change the font, but I agree, I would use it rarely. What I find myself wishing I could do on a fairly regular basis, is putting something in italics, underlining a book title, putting a word in bold. As for the color, something else I would rarely go to the trouble of using, but again, I would like to know how to for that rare occasion when I might. Such as in a Christmas greetings thread or something like that. Most of the time I would not take the time to do that. As a matter of fact, I use the firefox browser and if you notice when I tried to use the color tags, I thought it didn't work. That is because firefox limits html commands when using their browser and I didn't see any red words. I realized that you did and I went and used Internet Explorer and sure enough, I saw the word red in red ink. Strangely, I didn't see the other effects. That was confusing and I have no idea why. BUT, in the browser that I use every day, the commands I wanted to use work fine with the directions you gave me. So I am all set. The thing I wanted most to do and will probably use more frequently than the others, is posting a photo inside the post. I used to use Tinypic, but at some point something changed and I was pasting the command they were providing and it still wasn't working. So these directions worked for me. I compared the command you were suggesting to the command Tinypic provided and they were different. But I think I would still use the Tinypic site to upload the photo and then just change the command where needed. Finally, on Nan's concern about resizing the photos. I assume that the concern is the time it takes to open a thread for someone on dial up when one of the photos is oversized. So the photo I posted above, is oversized? If that is a problem, I will go back and review the directions for resizing. Hope that helps. :-)

If I understand Carolyn correctly, copyrighted material contained in the links cannot be used in the FAQ without permission. **** Nope, you didn't understand me correctly. LOL No article in the FAQ's can contain a link to anything, be it a seed source, pest and disease place, etc. There is no permission given to circumvent that, and the reasons are several but I won't go into them here. Spike, his public name, who owned DG before he sold it, was head honcho here when folks here were doing the FAQ's and since via contract he stayed around to help the new owners I'm pretty darn sure there have been no changes in that regard since there have been little to no changes in any of the verbiage elsewhere at this site.. And apparently there's no way to do a sticky here. At almost all places where I post one can develop a list of links for seed sources, buy plants via mail, etc., but that can't be done here at GW. In the pest and disease Forum is a valuable Problem Solver II and we wanted that to stay at the top as a sticky and that can't be done either. As for how to save seeds, it starts with the FAQ article on how to prevent X pollination. How to process seeds via fermentation or TSP or whatever comes next. And for that I suggest that folks save the thread that Dave has linked to a number of times re that issue and post it when someone asks how to ferment seeds or whatever. And it does get complicated to add to the FAQ's b'c it has to be one person to do so, hopefully someone that folks here know and respect, that person has to be approved by management and given the codes for uploading, etc. But before that even happens there has to be approval, or should be, by the current posters here so they have an opportunity to add delete, etc. It might be suggested that one person should write FAQ's, up load them and that's that. I disagree with that very much b'c all you get is that one person's viewpoint of the issue and that's not something that I and many others can agree with. And it takes ages, sometimes, to get agreement on what will be written and reviewed publicaly and then uploaded. Carolyn

FAQ-SEED CHANGE Outline 1--Special Instructions for the Seed Exchange --make them a LOT friendlier than the existing ones are, if OK with GW. 2-Getting set up and started A--setting up your GW profile and email settings B--setting up your Trade Page-Post the date it was updated at the TOP of the page --note seed source if other than your garden Commercial (C)-Garden (G) received in Trade (T) --note year harvested, received in trade or purchased, if it is known. C-Member Page Blurb-share a bit about yourself or your gardening style and/or challenges. Even if you are a very private person, possibly you could at least share with us what you enjoy growing. 3--Nothing to trade? Join in the fun by responding to Seeds for Postage ‘offers’ --Everything you ever wanted to know about seeds for postage offers --Members with excess seeds to share 4--Can I trade seeds I have gathered from my garden, ie flowers, vegetables, shrubs, trees, etc? What about saving seeds from Hybrid plants? --and also refer them to the Saving Seed Forum, and/or the FAQ there. 5--How should I label my seed packets? Both common and botanical names if known Year of harvest or purchase or received in trade Your GW Member Name, in case there are any questions Additionally growing instructions are nice but not required. I'm puzzled why everyone seems so keen on keeping this post on the first page. From the title of the post, it's not at all obvious that it contains a link to the FAQ for newbie users. The title makes is sound like some sort of contest or a fund raiser - or something unrelated to the forum. The title just doesn't clearly convey that there's useful information for a new user.

Besides, isn't there a rule on Garden Web against bumping postings simply to move the post to the top of the listings?

I'm curious as to why I need to address this issue? I have been trying to be helpful - if GWers don't think it's helpful I won't do it.

However, we often get thank yous from newbies who do look and find the link helpful. So far it seems that many other GWers think it's good. Sooooooo, should we take a vote? I have finished my kitchen and had comitted to helping keep this in the front. That said, I wouldn't mind stopping.

BTW - I feel that any newbie looking for info would click a link titled FAQ anything.

I think keeping a FAQ thread on the front page is very helpful. When this thread gets full, we'll start a new one with a title like "FAQ- Read this first!" and we'll all be trained to bump it up.

I vote for bumping. A lot of newbies come in the way I did, through a web search that lands us into a topic. It takes awhile to learn how to get around.

And I think bumping something to be helpful to all is very different from bumping just to be self important :) I don't see the powers that be yanking the topic!

kailuamom... I apologize if I offended you by suggesting the new thread be addressed by you. It was only because it was started by you and I know you have been helping the bump. I have no problems with the bump part, however I do think a new title might help the newbies realize it's for them! I am new here since Nov. and I appreciate all the help from everyone, and I'm trying to do my little part by helping to bump. I learn new things every day here, it's a great place to spend time. Thank You Everyone

If you re-read your post all you said was you agreed with a previous poster and I should address it. It's funny with these forums, people don't know what you mean. (I don't mean that to be "snarkey" at all - just a difficulty with the internet).

The other poster closed with issues with bumping altogether, so I wasn't sure what I was supposed to address. If you do a search of FAQ - you will see we have tried several different titles. None of which got much action by anyone other than me. (for the most part.)

As we are getting close to the end of this thread (i50 posts max), I will let someone else come up with the next title to see if we can keep this going.

I still think "FAQ- Read this first!" would be a good title for future threads. I also like the idea of including a link to the FKB as well as the FAQ page.

How About every one that bumps add a "new title" that you think may be useful to 'newbies'. One that is easy to spot for those of us that like to bump it up. Like this present one was always easy to spot!

The Kitchen Forum Acronyms will help you understand some of the acronyms used frequently in posts.

The Finished Kitchens Blog has pictures and information about many GW members' finished kitchens. Not only can you see them alphabetically, but there is also a category list if you're looking for specific things like a kitchen w/a Beverage Center or a kitchen w/a mix of dark and light cabinets.

The Appliances Forum is very useful when you have questions specific to appliances.

To start off the process...take the Sweeby Test. Then, move on to Beginning a Kitchen Plan.

Other topics such as planning for storage can be found by doing a search on the forum.

Tip: When using the "search" function, be sure to use the search box on the bottom of the page, not the top!

Again, welcome and good luck! The journey is wild, sometimes bumpy, but fun!
