I could not find the part about oven doors with panels. This is a European website, different products available there. The only thing I have seen so far in the US is panels for warming drawers.

(I once saw pictures of an apartment in France with upholstered walls. The fireplace was flannel right up to the firebox with a small metal flange around the edge. They have different ideas about fire retardancy I guess :D

Interesting site. Although I am a lover of old houses, I am a greater lover of really good architecture and design no matter the period. Still, I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around that "transformed" Victorian in Australia though! What transformation? Hasn't the original house been completely demoed? Despite the truly fascinating, brilliant and beautiful house that has evolved (which might also be highly impractical, btw), I can't help but wonder what's happened to the original structure? Why even bother calling it a "transformation" if what you've got is a demo and rebuild? Don't mind me. I love historic houses and I love modern ones. But what I really hate is modern remuddling of great old houses. Although there's no evidence that the original Vic was a "great" one, nor am I clear as to whether Aussie and North American "Vics" are conceptually similar in design, I'm feeling a bit ruffled by competing tastes and values on this one.:-)

That said, I think the kitchen in this house is rather amazing. According to the architects:

"The kitchen, whilst prominent, is strategically modest. The clients, both caterers, were adamant that work need not be brought home. Conversely, having resigned to the fact kitchens get messy, the walk in pantry is relatively large in desire of keeping any mess out of sight. Beyond providing plenty of workspace, a lengthy island bench, breaching both original and new spaces, offers a linking element."

I'm sorry, Emily! I didn't mean to hijack!:-) On the paneled ovens, though, I just not feeling that at all. (This from one with a paneled dishwasher and fridge, btw). Perhaps, in my book, that's taking sleek and modern over the edge. IOW, at what point do we stop and ask ourselves if what we're really trying to do with all our paring down is really just to hide the kitchen altogether? Which, in fact, may very well be the objective for some. Just not for me.

I'm a real sucker for all things storage and working with small areas.

I've just bookmarked two sites to create even further distractions for myself. :-)

I think in a studio apartment in NYC or Tokyo where you may be living in 300 square feet, completely hiding a full function kitchen could be very important, so you don't feel as if you are using the oven as a nightstand.

I am one who would love paneled ovens, but to me, these are just ovens in a cabinet- which doesn't seem that different from what these people did at Yestertech.

I want a real paneled oven, just like a paneled fridge w/ the door of the oven as the panel itself. Seems like it shouldn't be that hard to do :( Even if they did it, my kitchen will be done and it will be too late.

Yes, I thought of the yestertec stealth kitchens, too. But I loved some of the other kitchens on that site, especially the small ones. Thanks for the link, emily_mb.

I think most cabinet companies would have such a good time with disclaimers on the finish that people would give up on trying it.

My cabinet company recommended that I remove adjacent drawers and "protect the faces of adjacent cabinets" if I used the self clean function on the range. 8[
