"Starting to see?" - Kitchen Trends for 2013
Comments (33)Several things come to mind: A lot of very bad "journalism" in the design field. Just fill the pages... This also applies to craft type magazines, the zillion Better Homes and Gardens publications being at the top of the list. I always get the feeling that whoever writes the articles has no interest whatsoever in that particular endeavor. My biggest regret is for the change at Quilter's Newsletter which has moved from interesting stuff in the world of quilting to blah, blah, blah. Yes, I did let my subscription lapse a couple of years ago. beekeeperswife: I tell you that here in Central PA the closest thing to painted kitchen cabinets that is just catching on is the glazed cabinet look. I'm the Marilyn Munster of Central PA, just for the record. The look of horror on every builder's face as well as every fabricator's face when I mentioned white cabinets and marble was priceless. Should have taken pictures of all of their faces.... Ha! A friend was born with some weird heart valve issue that evidently made interesting noises. She delighted in not warning new doctors before they had a listen. She took great amusement in their reactions, the classic being the frozen face followed by the polite, neutral face, and then very polite language suggesting that, well, this might require some follow-up. [That heart really didn't cause her any issues until it quit working one day when she was 70. She was fixing dinner at the time in her custom kitchen. Not a bad way to go.] One of the really great things about GW is that so many practical things get examined from so many perspectives: corner cabinet solutions, placement of cabinet hardware, function of different sink options, thorough dissection of layout issues, GC and fabricator problems. And then there's fashion/fad/trend side of things. This is the icing on the cake corner of the world and lots of fun. There are kitchens I love here and ones that I don't love, but I appreciate them all and am glad everyone shares - much better than pay-by-the-word keyword dependent non-info....See MoreReplacing one trend with another trend.
Comments (8)I was reminded by this thread of this Meryl Streep classic from The Devil Wears Prada: "This... 'stuff'? Oh... ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blindly unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic "casual corner" where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of 'stuff.'"...See Morenew kitchen trends?
Comments (11)I'm definitely seeing more oak these days. Especially since I'm almost finished with my oak and white kitchen! What I saw a more of when I was looking was white oak, often with a pale gray or white stain, either quarter sawn (more traditional look) or rift cut (more linear, modern look), rather than golden oak or red oak. Think Restoration Hardware/Belgian kitchen oak.I'd say that white oak is bordering on the trendy right now. I agree that the beauty of the wood is hard to beat. Take a look at Senator13's kitchen for a beautiful example. There have been a few posted here in the past year. Mine's a couple of months away from being picture ready, but I think it looks great, and not "out" at all....See MoreLocal Kitchen Walk, and gratitude to GW
Comments (18)Oh, good -- that linked article is indeed about the Kitchen Walk, and that's about all there is in the way of photos. There's a booklet that the people on the walk get, with a tiny grainy black and white photo of each kitchen, but I don't think there's anyplace online where you can see all the kitchens. CEFreeman -- lol, I'm only the best kitchen on the Walk in my own admittedly biased estimation! Pretty sure many people would prefer one of the bigger, blingier kitchens. feisty68 -- drawers do indeed rock! Can't wait to see your Ikea drawers when they're in! blfenton -- I totally agree about the people of GW! Couldn't have begun to do my kitchen without this resource. I overheard my designer tell my contractor to let me figure out some issue they were having because I did the most research of any client he'd ever had, lol. oldbat2be -- good sleuthing! The Kitchen Walk is in Oak Park and River Forest. suzannesl -- I know! Smaller kitchens are often more functional than large ones. The trend here is to add big honking additions onto our smaller old houses, and while this often makes for a better space, it's no guarantee. amck -- I'm glad to hear of another one of these events. Who among us could resist a peek into other people's kitchens? (We also have a House Walk of Frank Lloyd Wright houses every year, but I manage to resist that because the tickets are over $100 each!) anitamo -- Sorry I didn't mention it before the event. Somehow I never think there are any GWers in the area. It is a great cause, too, and one I've supported in other ways for a long time. robynstamps -- perfect! Thanks for getting that link up!...See Morenosoccermom
