Getting started on my kitchen layout (photo)... thoughts?

Hi there,

I'm so glad that I found GW, such a great resource! DH and I are building a house. I meet with my KD in 2 weeks so I'm starting to think of my kitchen layout. I'm wondering what you online experts think I should do with my space.

The dimensions are: 10' on L, 16' in middle, 8'8" on R. The pantry is about 4' wide and 9' deep.

I'd like to incorporate the Electrolux Icon refrigerator and freezer. Do I have the space? I'm planning for a slide in induction range. I'd also like to be able to sit at least 3-4 people at my island. A big question of mine - where should the MW go? We use it all the time!

Another issue I wonder about - island size. Does it stick out too far?

Lifestyle-wise, we have 2 very young daughters and are planning for 1-2 more children.

The island sink is to far from the stove area move it closer to stove in the island.
Micro can go underneath where island sink was or in the corner on the countertop next to frig, make this upper cabinet next to the frig an 18" deep by
30" (+-)wide straight across and eliminate the upper corner cabinet.
Make the upper cabinet right of the window one cabinet it looks like there is two of them and one is real small like 12" .Also the frig and freezer area look huge like 72" it is not in proportion to the kitchen.How deep are the frig and freezer? if they are deeper then 24" this will be a problem sticking out in the room.do you have to have the computer desk area this would be perfect for the frig and freezer and you would have tremendous amount of counter space where frig and freezer were.Even a small computer desk area can be put on the end of that run where frig and freezer where.

I agree with above but also wonder

-how wide are your aisleways (counter to counter) from the island to the perimeter

-how far will your kitchen table be from the island. With seating at the island you should leave about 2'- 3' for walkaround space when someone is seated.

-I can't tell what the island does at the clean-up sink end as it looks like it narrows. How narrow does it go?

-It looks like the island might get in the way between the range and the fridge.

-move the prep sink down and onto the other side if possible.

-make sure you have trash beside the prep sink.

-the doors to the computer station (which seems awfully big to me) - are they doors that sit on the counter to close up the mess or are they full doors. If they are full doors I can see those been left open all the time. I would suggest a pocket door so that when it is lift open it won't take up hall space.

Get rid of the soffit and have the contractor do a flush beam in the attic with the ceiling flush. Lose the pony wall and wing wall corner cabinet and just go straight across the wall with cabinets and take them to the counter as a hutch. Use cabinet paneling on the back of the peninsula cabinets, not drywall. Lose the dated open shelving by the window and get a real hood instead of an OTR. HD contractors can't handle that level of construction, so you need to interview real contractors. They'll be less than half of what HD charges as well. For lighting, three fluorescent mini pendants over the peninsula with a dimmer and two semi flush fluorescent pendants over the sink with a dimmer.Make sure you select fluorescents that can operate on a dimmer and the correct dimmer. Under cabinet LED lighting on a dimmer. 8-10 recessed LED lights on a dimmer depending on where the fridge is in this layout. You need someone experienced in cabinet installs to go over the plan on site in person before you order to double check measurements. HD cabinet people aren't noted for their experience or accuracy.

Sorry...this is wordy. I do appreciate all the help. Still floundering I guessÂ. I've actually been thinking and rethinking this kitchen remodel for 3 years, maybe I just havenÂt been paying attention to the real details like zones and functionality. Originally (3 years ago) I had 5-6 different quotes and almost all were for the very last layout I posted or similar. My mom then had a heart attack and a 3-week hospital stay, so my mind wasn't into it and some of the budget got depleted with helping with medical expenses and travel. So we redid a master bath and haven't gotten to the kitchen yet. I guess like loves2cook4six I may be puzzle fitting...but I thought I was following a good plan and utilizing prep/cook/clean zones. I was figuring the peninsula as a landing zone, food into the pantry and into the fridge, minimal steps to take. I have counter space between the fridge and oven. Cooking zone at the cooktop area. Cleanup along the sink. Prep zone on the peninsula. I could put the DW on the peninsula. I can easily rethink the cabinets above the peninsula. Super large pantry for storage of anything and everything that doesnÂt fit in the kitchen. Mixer, break maker, crock pot, etc. Part of the problem is the kitchen has two funky wall juts (one on the deck side ~22.5 inches out and one on the garage side again ~28.5 inches) that doesn't make it quite square and dictates the space. The space along the garage includes a load bearing wall so there isn't much I can do to push a wall into the garage or make it a good idea to place the cooktop on that wall. I do not want a cooktop on the peninsula. That isn't a look I'm partial too. Just for looks I like the cooktop on the wall where it is to make it a focal point, view from the FR. I don't want to be looking at a fridge. I don't seem to have quite enough space to put in an island where I could put a sink and DW. Or utilize as a prep area. I have an island now with a cooktop and I hate it. Mainly because it is 2x7 and in the way. I seem to run around it all day long. So more than anything I know what I donÂt want. The exterior wall is brick, so it really isn't easy to move the window over the sink. And I think it is the sink and window that are driving the placement of the other items. In a perfect world, I blow out the wall at the deck and push it out 8-10 feet. This however, would entail building out the basement and the bathroom/bedroom above. Granted the bathroom above needs work and the bedroom above is the smallest and would benefit the size increase, but blowing that out would take up my entire kitchen budget plus some:)

Thanks for the input. I drew "bmorepanic"'s layout out and have attached below. I went with 2 versions where I flopped where the fridge was. Looks a little tight when on the left wall. Wish the pantry closet could be closer as it will be a little PITA to get to it. Went with a swinging 2'-8" door for a couple of reasons. One being there is a waste line somewhere in that wall from the upstairs bath and secondly I have it already here, I would just need to move it. Any thoughts on the "eat at counter" in regards to counter height or table height? Was thinking getting outlets for counter height is limited to one outlet on the exterior wall. Would also have to have a garbage disposal switch, along with switch for undercabinets lights if I opt for those and all would be 24" away from the edge of the sink. Budget is tight, but would really love to get a combo wine/beer fridge for undercounter. Originally I had it laid out in the island. Right now I think the only spot I could put it would be at the left end of the "eat at counter" with and end panel to support the counter. "rob p" there isn't enough room to put the W/D along the common kitchen wall as the panel would be. The elec. panel isn't high enough either to get W/D under and code requires 3' clearance. The window seat is a good idea at the bay window as I could gain more storage underneath. Any ideas of a cabinet layout there? I've seen window seats done with upper cabinets as the base. If I go with my Custom Cabinet guy, it is no problem, but if I opt to get standard off the wall cabinets elsewhere it will be a little tougher to get right.

Yes I started with a U Shaped kitchen to begin with and everyone said it took up too much space. The consensus was that the kitchen should be a third. Living a third. also if I add another wall of cabinets it’s going to infringe on the dining table. Unless y’all think the dining table should go in the middle? the whole kitchen living dining space is only 18’ x 17’. This is a one bedroom. 700 square feet.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I like the idea of moving the fridge and freezer, however, the computer desk area is part of the great room area (hence the doors to hide the desk). I think that the F+F are each 32" wide so a total width of 64". Would my kitchen be big enough for that? They would be built in. They are 26-5/8" deep.

I think I like your idea of putting the microwave next to the fridge.

How is my prep sink placement? Realistically, how many people should I be able to sit at a counter height island in a kitchen this size?

Below is the fridge and freezer combo that I really hope to have in my kitchen.

SOrry, we were posting at the same time. I believe our aisles are about 3.5ft wide, maybe 4.5 ft on the R side, but the above rendering was just a general kitchen layout from our house designer. I'm expecting the island shape to change. At this point, it just looks like a rectangle with a corner cut off.

I was also wondering about the range to fridge distance, but I absolutely do not want my range on the island. Is there another solution?

So the prep sink is best near the range? I thought near the fridge for salad/fruit prep...

Yes, the doors to the computer desk will be of the folding or pocket variety. We haven't found a product yet though, so we're open to suggestions there!
