Rough times.... my daughter called today too, saying she'd been laid off from Pottery Barn. They (and their parent company) laid off 1400 people nation wide.

I sorry to hear about your daughter Leslie. What a bad thing to have to have happen on her birthday.

Oh gosh Leslie!! I am sorry.

I know you're worried already. Remember my DS lost his job (a darn good one) had taken a temporary job, that was done, found out about another job and hurray got it! It wasn't as good as he thought and driving 59 miles one way was the pits this winter. He quit and luckily his old job called him and wanted him back! Its not the "good job" he had but the place he'd worked before the good job....but hey its a JOB! He of course is a month behind on his CS and all his bills and now trying to play catch up. I hate that he is struggling and hope your DD doesn't struggle along for months like he did.

Sending prayers your DD finds a better job fast!!

That really is such a shame. It's hard for her, but it's also hard for you, because we worry about our kids no matter how old they are. I hope she finds something else soon.

Connie, she lives paycheck to paycheck now, and sometimes falls behind. I've had to lend her money before. Then I got the car, and I don't have any extra to help her if she does need it. Hopefully, she'll get her income tax figured and get her refund, and use it wisely until she finds something else.
Susan, yes, we worry about them, from womb to tomb. And the grandkids too.

Hugs for you all. Times sure are getting tougher. Hope she finds something soon, but if your newspaper looks anything like ours, it's slim pickin' out there. Unemployment in our town is over 8%. May be more than that now since that was around Christmas time.

I'm sorry to hear that. Is there no company policy where she would be issued a warning before a firing? Was there any proof other than hear-say?

sigh! So sorry about the troubles she's having. I hope she can find an even better job. Sometimes that happens when we least expect it. Hugs..

DS is self-employed in a fairly specialized field. He's not had work for a few months, and it's really hurting him. Luckily my DDIL (and she is dear, I love her like I had birthed her) is making good money as a hair stylist so the bills aren't going unpaid. I feel real empathy for those being laid off/let go in these tough times. Been there, done that, years ago.

I sure she will find something better, or at least something that will pay the bills temporarily, very soon. Good karma from Mom, right?

I'm sorry to hear about your DD's situation. As a mother, I know how hard it must be for you, so (((hugs))) to you both. This economy is so bad and times are scary. We can only hope and pray that things will begin to turn around soon. I hope everything works out for you, your DD and her kiddos.

The same thing happened to my DD last Summer - but she grew to hate the job.

My advice (and I am an HR Director) - take a course or earn a degree to ensure she keeps her skills updated & to show future employers she is on top of her game.

So sorry to hear such bad news. I hope she can overlook this as something that wasn't of her own work habits. I lost a job because of a freak situation on my birthday once - it was snowing and icy, and I had parked a LONG way from the builing. Talk about a long walk!! My manager walked with me because she was against letting me go and felt so badly. They had hired me because someone I knew worked there and they trusted her jugement. Something went horribly wrong after 2 weeks and they fired her (no real reason). They were so silly to think I would be a mole for here and that would ruin their competitive edge. That was a very bad day.

Sending a special hug to you and your daughter. Tell her to take a huge breath and exhale all of that ugly past. It's better to be away from an unhealthy situation.

Tell her to file for unemployment even though she was fired. Some states will give unemployment if you argue that you were fired for unfair reasons (like other employees ganging up on you, violating policies that everyone violates, etc.). It's worth a shot. She may be able to make a case that she wasn't given a warning, wasn't aware of the issue and that it was basically a bunch of people just ganging up on someone less popular.

Sorry to hear this, my DD lost her job in late Nov. Unemployment isn't much but it does help.

Awww...I hate to hear that, Leslie. I tell ya what, if it's us or our kids in financial straits, I'd ALWAYS rather it would be us! (Figure you feel the same way.) I worry about young people trying to raise kids during these crazy times. I also think they have less coping skills as to cutting back, etc. Hope she finds something else soon.

Sorry to hear. That's all you hear lately everyone is losing their jobs. Unemployment benefits does have one
extenion on. I think more will be needed.
