Help! My new Bosch Nexxt 700 smells like it is burning!

Sorry this is so long, I could not decide which details were truly relavent.

I got my new nexxt 700 on Tuesday. The delivery was not great, they took out the transit bolts and layed the machine down on its back before I could stop them to attach the stand. Then they put the old feet on the stand, not the new ones that Chris told us about, they gave me the new ones and said they were the older ones. Next they had trouble hooking up the water hoses, the fins? are so tall that they hit the handle on my shut off valves. They finally got them attached to their satisfaction. Then they stuck about 2 feet of the drain hose down the drain pipe, I fixed that myself after calling Bosch Cust. Service to check how much hose should be in the pipe.

Now for the Exciting part, I did the first cycle empty to clean the machine, then did a load of towels. It was obviously not nearly level. So I started woking on leveling it. I noticed a bit of a wierd smell, I figured it was just the smell of a new washer. Yesterday I started doing my laundry, after a couple loads the smell was back, after a couple more loads my entire house reeked of melting plastic! I am very sensitive to smells because of my allergies so I figured it was just me. When my husband got home he asked what I was doing and why the house smelled like burning plastic. I shut the machine down and unplugged it. This morning I gave it a shot to see what would happen. After the load was done, my whole house smelled like melted plastic again. I called Bosch, they said they had never heard anyone having this problem. They offer to send someone out, I said I was going to call the place I bought it because they said they could arrange repairs through Bosch for my warranty. So I talked to the gentleman who sold me my machine. He offered to have someone come out and look at it or order me another. Probobly 4 weeks to get another. Then he offered to refund the difference and have a 500 put in tomarrow. I decided to take that.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? Both Bosch and my salesman said they were unaware of the washers ever causing an oder like this, even when first used. I'm just curoius if anyone else has noticed something like this. Lowes is taking care of me, so no complaints there. Bosch's customer service was also very helpful.

Chris, if you see this, have you heard of this happening before? Could it have been damaged during install?

Jcrowley, we got our Nexxt 500 delivered Tuesday, too - 2 months and 2 days after we ordered it. This would be a nifty coincidence, if only you weren't having this problem.

I do find that my machine smells pretty strongly, a mix of plastic and rubber. I've now run the same load of work clothes through there 5 times (on hot, and once with bleach) and the rubber smell is definitely dominant. I thought the clothes were carrying the smell too. We did run a totally empty load on hot before we did anything else.

Could something be heating the rubber gasket in front of the machine? For me, this seems to be the (logical and obvious) source of the rubbery smell.

I hope you'll be happily situated with a new machine very, very soon! Do let us know how this turns out.

That was my first thought, just the smell of the new rubber gasket on the machine. That is , until my entire house, all 4,000 sq feet, was filled with the smell. My cloths smelled just fine after washing. Did you find that this smell permeated the whole house? The smell was also more plasticy than rubbery. I could definitly smell the gasket when I was by the machine, but this was a stronger smell. I also noticed (as did my son) that the machine was very warm, actually hot around the controls. Does yours do that? (I know the controls are different on the two models so that might not be a fair comparison)? That is why I decided to go down to the 500, different readout. If there was a problem there, I would rather have something different.

Just an afterthought. concerning leveling, if you are using pedestals.... When the Home Depot guys off loaded the washer and pedestal, they married the two out in the street before bringing it into the house. I watched everything they did (and didn't) do. The two pieces get married with these brackets on the sides that both screw and glue together. They just slapped the two units together, not paying any attention to the leveling legs that were on the bottom of the washer, now resting on the top of the pedestal. Who knows what position they were in, after coming all the way from Asia. What I found out later, was that these leveling legs do influence the vibration coming off the machine. Even if you get the complete unit level, you can still have some vibration problems if the leveling legs on the washer were wacked when they put the two together. Unfortunately, the glue they use for the brackets is fairly permanent, and hard to make changes after the fact. I would probably suggest that the legs on the washer be put all the way in prior to joining the pieces together; or, level the pedestal, put the washer on top, level that, and then put the joining brackets on. I love Home Depot, but they really should get better-than-minimum-wage contractors to do these installs. Good luck.

Well, I don't think that putting water on the floor would help. It was snowing when they delivered it and they set one of the feet down in a wet spot. They could not slide the foot, they had to lift it. The feet that did get wet moved easier. I am going to call Lowes to see if someone can came out and help me get the machine level. First I want to reinforce the floor, I noticed more vibration under one foot, so I checked the joist under that area and noticed that they left a 1/4" gap between the joist and the floor boards in that area. They had filled the gap with caulk but it has all oozed out over the years (house is about 30 years old). My neighbor told me how to fix that, so after I do that I will call my saleman about getting it leveled better. I have to say that all in all I think Lowes service has been really good, and so has Bosches customer support when I have had questions. Hopefully everything will be running smooth as silk soon. : ) Jo

The fact that the cloths are dryer from the high spin probably does effect wrinkling, but my Cabrio has a high speed spin too, and cloths come out of it less wrinkled than with the FLer. Maybe the wash action also has some effect. As for the detergent, I used All Small and Mighty Free and Clear HE detergent in three different machines, my old Kenmore TLer, my Bosch 500, and my Cabrio. I used the same amount of fabric softener in each machine. They were in the same location so the water would be the same. The only difference was the machine itself. Wait, and the number of rinses, even with minimal detergent, I had to use more rinses to remove the detergent in the 500. But rinses should not effect the fabric softener if it is added to the final rinse. Cloths never came out as soft in the front loader, and sheets and towels, especially towels, were rough and stiff, not soft and fluffy. It has to have something to do with front loaders. Could higher wash temp make towels stiff? I used hot water in the FLer and other machines. In the old Kenmore it was probably cooler, but I think hot would be the same based on incoming water temp. Even if the 500 was boosting the temp somehow on hot (which I don't remember it doing) I have raised the temp on my water heater twenty degrees since I got the cabrio. I did not realize it was still set at a lower temp from when my son was young. Water heats up much quicker and lasts longer now! So I have washed towels in the Cabrio at the old lower hot and the new higher hot. There was no effect on the towels, they still come out fluffy and soft, so I don't think it is the water temp.

I am not familiar with your machine but I downloaded the service manual and it says there is a round access cover that you remove that covers over the drain pump area, I presume to access the plug that allows you to clear an obstruction inside the pump. Under that same round access cover laying next to the pump is a draw string release cable to allow the latch to be released. Just pull the cable which resembles fishing line. It says to remove the access cover insert a tool into the little hole and push in to release and turn cover clockwise.

Hmmmm... THis one sounds pretty strange to me. I can't think of why it may be happening. I'll pass it on to our factory/engineer folks and see if they know anything about it.

Let me know if it continues to be an issue.

Well, my new Bosch Nexxt 500 was intalled about an hour to replace the 700. I am still doing the first empty cycle, so far there is no smell of any kind. I am having a problem with leveling the feet. They put the new feet on the pedestal, and I don't think it is going to move any where, I could not even turn the foot I tried to adjust, it seemed to cling to the floor. Any good tips on how to adjust these new feet? The installer tried, but the edge of the foot was getting mangled. I guess I will have to have someone lift the machine so I can adjust the foot?

Did you check to see if the nuts that tighen the feet into place were loose. They should be right up against the bottom of the pedestal, feel under there and check, you have to loosen those before you can turn the feet. Hope that helps. You probably already did that, but that's my best suggestion.

I can't loosen the nuts because they put the feet on in the lowest possible position. I just need to make one of the legs a little longer. This may not help. There only seems to be vibration by this one leg. Could be a problem with the floor. I did a load of towels, my new washer smells like a new can of tennis balls, but not melting plastic, yeah!

In order to move the feet up or down you have to loosen the nut, so it should loosen either way. If they are all the way out, and that leg is too short, could you loosen the nuts on the other 3 feet and give them a 1/4 turn shorter. That would make the leg you have a problem with longer.

Regarding the burning smell:

Just like a new car has some pretty strong plastic and rubber odors, your Bosch washer is similar in that respect. The internal heater has a tendency to enhance the new plastic/rubber odors. This combined with a slight odor from the new tub drive belt, during high speed spin can be somewhat of a concern to a few customers.

When I worked for B/S/H/, periodically I would receive calls from customers complaining of the plasic/rubber burning odor coming from their new washer; both AXXIS and NEXXT, but it never amounted to anything dangerous in the way of a fire hazard, just a disturbing odor. One customer received two AXXIS replacements, due to the burning odor. The replacement machines produced the same smell and I can only attribute it to the internal heater, which had a tendency to enhance these odors, of which some people are very sensitive. Our live showroom AXXIS unit produced this odor when new, with a reduction and finally an elimination of the smell over a few months of use.

Some dealers took the so called problem machines back, due to a few customers unwilling to live with the smell on the short term, but you should notice a reduction in the odor over time.

I do recommend having any machine with a burning odor to at least be checked/inspected by an authorized servicer for your own safety and peace of mind.
