I broke my arm! Well, not really...

Well, not really...but I nearly broke it patting myself on the back because I hooked up my DVD/VCR recorder!!! LOL!

OK, I apologize for luring you into this thread with a fake subject line, but honest - if you only KNEW how frustrating that experience was! I posted about it last week and knew I was close to having it right. Unfortunately, "close" doesn't count when hooking up electronics.

Today I vowed to confine myself to the bedroom and not come out until I had the darn thing working. I started by unhooking everything - even where the Dish comes in at the wall and goes to the dual DVR and starting from scratch with the instruction books. Once I knew everything was hooked up and our dual DVR thingy still worked in both rooms (whew!), I started in on the VCR/DVD book and remote. It takes three remotes to operate (Dish, TV, VCR), but I just recorded a few minutes from a VHS tape to a DVD just to see if I could get 'er done.

WOW! If I don't do another thing all day, I will still feel like I climbed a mountain!

Well look at you, all technical and stuff. :) I admire and congratulate you Rita. Most of that type thing intimidates me these days. I gladly hand it over to McCloud. Back up, I'll gladly give you some pats too.

YOU GO GIRL!! You have climbed a mountain today!! the back of our TV is so intimidating to me it's not funny...i'm strictly the end user!!

Oh, what a shame. I broke my wrist two days before Thanksgiving four years ago - had the cast on until after New Year's. Had to rethink what I do for the holidays. Couldn't even wrap presents, so had to ask for help to do just about everything, and discovered that it was more fun to do things with others, anyway (and that it was ok to jettison some of the holiday rigamarole). I cut the toe off a Christmas sock and wore it as a cast cover and everybody congratulated me on my positive attitude. Once the cast was off, I was ready to resume my life and my rose pruning, and that's when my good attitude went sour. While I did fully recover, it takes some time to get strength and mobility back. It was months before I had my grip back and full range of motion. Mine was a simple break, no surgery required. Hope that you heal just as well, but be prepared that recovery will take longer than the time that the cast is on. I'd never before had a broken bone and I had no idea. Your idea of adding rose photos is excellent. In fact, I was just looking at Vintage's site, thinking "I have photos of a few of these roses." Never occurred to me that I could help! carefully remove several of the lower "leaves" allow to air dry then apply 0.1% IBA (Rooting hormone)to "stem" stick in well drained soil & keep soil damp not wet..... the Leaves should be air dried & IF have a small cut area then also apply the same rooting hormone & stick in the soil There is a good chance it will also root. but both will be slow to root

Wow, do I know that a broken toe hurts. I was a senior in highschool, running laps in gym to warm up, and was elbowed by a boy running past me. I nearly fell flat on my face but caught myself and jarred my shoulders. My toe didn't hurt then, but my shoulders did. Then I went to play badminton and my big toe just suddenly started hurting like an Acme anvil from the cartoons had fallen on it. Well, it was first period, I was stupid, and the gym teacher already hated me for being an asthmatic and having to sit out sometimes. So I played badminton. My toe went numb. I went to all my classes like nothing was wrong... but after school when I took my shoe off, my toe was swollen nearly double and was nice pretty bruised colors. Mom took me to the ER, it was broken in several spots. I got a nice shoe to wear, heh. It still gives me problems, and likely always will. Anyway, glad you are feeling better.

Thanks everyone for your support. I know I need to leave but I suppose I've always been a sucker to help people. Amber - Thank you for your words. You are right, the only person I can save is myself. I suppose the battle is really working up the courage to say enough is enough. I struggle because I hate hurting people or feeling like I am letting them down but in the same regard I suppose by me doing things for my partner, he will never do anything to help himself or his son. Colleenoz - thank you for your kind words. I never thought about it like the way you put it. Seeing that he could turn like that if something bad happened to me is some what alarming. Because when I think of the answer to something happening to me and would he be there, I can't answer that. And if I can't answer that, then there is a real big problem. LaVerne - Thank you for your comment. Do I want to change? Yes i really do, so I guess I know what I have to do. Reading Lady - Sadly this situation is real, it would be nice if I was making it up but unfortunately I am not. I know everyone on his mother's side has bi-polar and basically have lived their lives in and out of either jails or foster homes. Sometimes I think the cycle can be broken but in the same regards, it's not my responsibility to have hero complex (i.e. trying to save everyone). Let me just say this, I know that none of you know me from a bar of soap, which in turn makes you more truthful. I appreciate your honesty and i thank you for your wisdom. I know everyone goes through hard stages in life, but you are right. If I am not happy with the situation, then only I can change it. I think it's time for me to worry about myself and get back what I want. If I succeed (and I truly hope I do) than please know every little word by each of you contributed to giving me strength. You all really have no idea how much you have put my mind, heart and bank balance at rest.

Way to go....you doned it all by your lonesome. For some stuff I have the patience of Job ~ but TV's, VCR's and all stuff technical with wires....just not in my realm of patience. LOL

You Go Girl! I still have to ask DH to put in a movie for me on my TV because I can't remember how to work the DVD player and which remote to use. I hide if anything electronic has to be hooked up. I hate the mass of cords and the multiple remotes. Give me the old days when you turned the knob to channel 2,4,6 or 8 and checked the TV guide to see what was on that night.

Like most of you, that stuff just baffles me. I will read instructions, but I prefer pictures. :-) Luckily, I had both for most of the process. I only got stumped when it said, "Your TV may be different...blah blah blah...it may have this button or that button...blah blah blah..." Well, I just started punching buttons until I found the right combination. Kinda like cracking a safe! LOL!

Ron has a great idea! If you get in a bind with your ____________ (fill in the blank with any frustrating electronic device), just call me at 1-800-PERSISTENT. I will tell you to just keep pushing buttons. :-)

Way to go Rita. That really was an accomplishment. What kind of recorder did you get and how much did it cost? I bought something that I think is one; at least the man at the store said it was. It's still in the box in a closet. I'm still not sure it records from vhs to dvd.

Good for you, Miss Smarty Pants! I'm proud of ya. You know, a lot of the newer remotes can do more than one thing, if you delve deeper into the book you may find that the TV remote can also work the DVD/VCR thingie. It did on our newish TV and sat receiver, so that's nice.

DH bought it. I think it's a Panasonic. We priced some at an electronics store and were leaning toward the JVC at over $200 but this one was around $125 at Walmart. I told him either one would probably only last a few years (it is frustrating that electronics are so "disposable" these days).
Get yours out of the closet and get busy!

Well I'm impressed because I'm totally useless in situations like that. I bought a new radio the other day and I couldn't even figure out how to put the battery in correctly.

See a few posts above yours. I know alisande did a lot of research before she bought hers because she had a particular situation. Even so, she may have some valuable advice to offer about reviews on various models. I Googled several and found complaints on all of them - about the same as happens when you look for online complaints about cars, computers, etc.

LOLOLOL You are funny.

Good job. I thought my brother was going to reach through the telephone and whack me up the side of the head when he was telling me how to connect the tv antenna when I got rid of my cable or when I tried to hook up my old Super Nintendo. Paul got so frustrated explaining what to do that he hung up on me. What did I know about video input and output, yadayadayada. Suddenly a light went on in this old brain of mine and I hooked it up correctly. I was proud of myself too! LOL

I save myself lots of frustration and let my DH take care of those kind of things. He's quite good at it.
