For mystery readers (and listeners)

I always have an audio book in the car, and usually it's a mystery. I borrow them from the library. Because I'm not a romance reader, I've ignored the JD Robb series of mysteries because the author is Nora Roberts, a romance writer. A very prolific romance writer.

Well, recently the library inventory was low, and I decided to give JD Robb a try. I actually brought the audio book home with another one in case I didn't like it. But I liked it a lot! Her "in Death" series takes place 50 years into the future--not sci fi per se, but it creates the opportunity for lots of futuristic gadgetry and amusing references.

The main character's husband is a true romance writer's creation: rich in the extreme, handsome in the extreme, thoughtful, compassionate, you name it. But he's fun and interesting, as are all the characters.

I don't know if I'd like the printed books as well as the audio books, because the narrator (Susan Erickson) does an excellent job with the voices and makes the story come alive.

Since I wrongly assumed I wouldn't like these books, I thought I'd pass my review on to you in case some of you might like to give them a try.

Oh the JD Robb books are terrific!! The perfect romance in that the male character is rich and handsome and they really love each other. Humour thrown in as well, when she hates being treated like a female and abhors having to wear anything dressy.

I love the futuristic things the author comes up with.

Have you read any of the "numbered series" Stephanie Plum stories by Janet Evanovich? Very funny!

I also love the Robb series, just finished one recently, of course can't remember the name.

Just listened to the last 15 minute instalment and must say I have enjoyed it more than anything I have heard for ages. Far more than a story about Her Majesty, AB shows how reading can bring a new dimension to our lives at whatever age. Even suitable for republicans (with a small 'R' of course).

Personally, I think actors almost always do a better job of reading than the authors. (Now, there's a controversial statement!) For one thing, they are generally hired specifically because of the quality of their voice/performance. I suppose one might be so taken with a certain author that one wants to have his/her voice wash over you for hours and hours, but really, that would be pretty unusual. On the other hand, I am now listening to a collection of short stories by Elizabeth Berg, and the author's voice is, IMHO, very well-suited to the medium. She thankfully does not try to imitate other people's voices, something that needs to be done with great skill; rather she adds short pauses to indicate dialogue. If she were, for example, trying to sound like a man's voice when an old boyfriend or a husband is speaking, I probably would have thrown the CD across the room. I just finished listening to a book read by a male author - if the story hadn't been compelling, I would never have finished it. As it was, I skipped vast segments with no loss to the story line. I simply couldn't take that author's voice for long periods of time.

I am one of those who like both. I am a fast reader and listening to a book forces me to slow down and really take in what is being said. I love to listen stem to audiobooks while doing mindless things like housework, gardening, walking etc.. I especially like listening to books when going on a long commute. I get so interested that I don't have trouble with highway hypnosis which listening to music or the radio doesn't help. However, as has been mentioned above, when reading, I can skip over the gory or overly descriptive scenes that bother me. Another plus for reading is that I can flip back pages if I think I've missed something or just want a refresher. Each have merits and I am fortunate enough to enjoy both.

Yes, I have read all of them and can't wait for the next one. I was totally hooked after the first two.

Yes, I've read most of the Stephanie Plum books. I bought a few for research purposes, as I'm always at least *thinking* about writing a novel. I was surprised at how funny I found them. They really made me laugh. After a read a few more I wished I could tell Stephanie to stop stringing Morelli along and marry him already! :-)

But of course the Ranger character (and all that sexual tension!) sells books, too.

I agree with Alisande, I really like reading the Stephanie Plum books but feel the same about poor Morelli...

My mother gave me a JD Robb book for my last plane trip home. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it, and I will be looking for more at the library. It was one of the "in Death" series, but not the first. I will now try to read them in sequence.

I read Nora Roberts reg. books...and have picked up several of her H.D.Robb books...But have not been able to get into them...I have given them away....maybe I need to give them another try.

After my success with JD Robb, I tried a Nora Roberts suspense audio book. The heroine was also a cop. I never finished it. I didn't dislike it, exactly, but it seemed slow and overly long. The characters were appealing, but when it came time to return it to the library, I didn't renew.
