Ever sell your gold?

For the past year, I have seen these ads in our local papers for places that purchase your unused/broken gold jewelry for "the going price" for gold and give you cash for it. Not like the pawn shops of old (I think!), but a few jewelers in the area advertise this, and I even read about a woman that hosts "gold refinery" parties like you would host a Pampered Chef or Tupperware party. Now, being a girl of the 1980's, I have at least 6 gold chain necklaces in my jewelry box, plus two single gold earrings laying around. Does anyone know of anyone that has tried this? I'm thinking a little extra cash around the holidays can't hurt, but the whole idea seems a little suspect to me. Any opinions? Sure my gold chains from the 80s are just gathering dust, but you never know when the world of fashion will repeat the trend, LOL.
